But when five people -- arrested Thursday night at Newark International Airport for allegedly smuggling $30 million worth of the drug -- appeared in U.S. District Court on Friday, they didn't have enough cash to pay an attorney.
They had enough cocaine to fund a revolution in a small country, federal authorities said.A public defender was appointed to help the five citizens of Puerto Rico through their initial appearance before U.S. Magistrate G. Donald Haneke in Newark. The three men and two women were arrested late Thursday by members of a joint task force of the federal Drug Enforcement Administration and the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey police, federal authorities said.Officials offered few details about the arrest or the alleged smuggling operation. But sources said the accused had left Puerto Rico on Thursday on a Newark-bound flight with 150 kilos of cocaine. When they landed at Terminal C, police and federal agents were waiting. No cash or weapons were seized. The five were charged with possession of cocaine with intent to distribute, federal authorities said. They were ordered held without bail pending a hearing next week, said federal Public Defender Donald J. McCauley.http://www.bergen.com/region/regcrime199903068.htm
