With five children looking on, a New York City cop was arrested in North Carolina yesterday after nearly a kilo of crack was found in his car, officials said.
Andre Formey, a transit officer in the Bronx, had been the target of an investigation by local, state and federal law enforcement agents for weeks, authorities said. The 34-year-old Formey was stopped at 10 a.m. on Interstate 40, about 15 miles outside Wilmington, N.C., where he was bringing the kids, ages 2 to 14, to visit family, said Tony Cummings, special-agent-in-charge of the North Carolina Bureau of Investigation's Coastal District office. Some of the youngsters were Formey's children, and others were relatives, officials said.In the trunk of the rented Mercury Mystique, investigators found something else he was bringing to town: 2 pounds of crack cocaine apparently smuggled from New York, Cummings said. The drugs have an estimated street value in New York of $20,000, cops said. How and where the veteran officer allegedly copped the cocaine is being investigated by the NYPD's Internal Affairs Bureau. The NYPD was contacted early in the investigation by North Carolina authorities, and bureau investigators were on hand for the arrest to seize the cop's shield and identification.Formey, a cop for 6½ years, has no disciplinary record, an NYPD spokesman said.He was charged with several counts of cocaine possession and trafficking and held on $1 million bond at the New Hanover County Jail, Cummings said.
