The Northcoast chapter of the National Organization for the Reform of Marijuana Laws (NORML) is in the process of opening the NORML Shop in Ravenna, Ohio and presented the artwork for the new NORML Shop's sign to the Ravenna city design review commission today. But the artwork was tabled to a future meeting.
John Hartman NORML's spokesman claims Mayor Jones is playing politics with the approval of the design of NORML's sign and stalling to prevent the NORML Shop from opening. Hartman, feels Jones is letting the issue of legalizing marijuana fog his objectivity as a member of the Design Review Commission. Hartman said, " We expected to have our artwork for our store's sign approved today by the Design Review Commission. But we were thrown a curve by Mayor Jones when he involved the approval of NORML's sign artwork contingent on the approval of Eric Hummel, NORML's landlord." Mayor Jones and Hartman had a very heated exchange of words during the design review commission meeting, with Hartman claiming Jones was playing politics. Hartman also asked Jones why he was involving his landlord in this issue when as of this date Mr. Hummel had not contacted him regarding the presents of NORML at 113 N Chestnut. NORML doesn't expect Mr. Hummel to object to NORML's sign, considering it is similar to other signs in the Central Business District. Hartman has made an appointment with the city's law director to establish a line of communication with the city because NORML feels that the Mayor has lost all objectivity regarding this issue and could be putting the city in a position were it may be legally liable for violating NORML's first amendment rights.December 9, 1999 Mayor Jones' Phone : 330-296-3864 Related Article & Web Site:North Coast NORMLhttp://www.timesoft.com/ncnorml/Ravenna: Cannabis Shop Lacks Required Permits-12/01/99http://www.cannabisnews.com/news/thread3837.shtml
