California -- Democratic leader Nancy Pelosi saw the writing on the wall and came out in defense of medical cannabis patients and dispensaries under assault by the federal government this week. San Francisco dispensaries served her a petition with thousands of signatures May 2. Subsequently, Speaker Pelosi released the May 2 statement saying:“Access to medicinal marijuana for individuals who are ill or enduring difficult and painful therapies is both a medical and a states’ rights issue. Sixteen states, including our home state of California, and the District of Columbia have adopted medicinal marijuana laws – most by a vote of the people.
“I have strong concerns about the recent actions by the federal government that threaten the safe access of medicinal marijuana to alleviate the suffering of patients in California, and undermine a policy that has been in place under which the federal government did not pursue individuals whose actions complied with state laws providing for medicinal marijuana. “Proven medicinal uses of marijuana include improving the quality of life for patients with cancer, HIV/AIDS, multiple sclerosis, and other severe medical conditions. “I am pleased to join organizations that support legal access to medicinal marijuana, including the American Nurses Association, the Lymphoma Foundation of America, and the AIDS Action Council. “Medicinal marijuana alleviates some of the most debilitating symptoms of AIDS, including pain, wasting, and nausea. The opportunity to ease the suffering of people who are seriously ill or enduring difficult and painful therapies is an opportunity we must not ignore. “For these reasons, I have long supported efforts in Congress to advocate federal policies that recognize the scientific evidence and clinical research demonstrating the medical benefits of medicinal marijuana, that respects the wishes of the states in providing relief to ill individuals, and that prevents the federal government from acting to harm the safe access of medicinal marijuana provided under state law. I will continue to strongly support those efforts."In other news Berkeley Patients Group, the biggest victim of the crackdown so far, has said on Facebook that it will go delivery-only as it pursues another location to re-open.Source: East Bay Express (CA)Author: David Downs Published: May 3, 2012Copyright: 2012 East Bay ExpressWebsite: Medical Marijuana Archives

Patenting Life -- SCOTUS Grants Patent to GE
Starts gold rush to patent life forms, including the US Government patent on cannabis and GW Pharmaceuticals' Sativex. The Corporation: Planet Inc. 2 of 3 | TVO Main.
About the video:
The commodification of every resource, every event, even of life itself has put a price tag on items once considered beyond the scope of commerce. And to convince us to buy all this stuff, marketers are using sophisticated - even covert - techniques to get their brands into our homes. Where is all this consumption taking us?

On the one hand, United States federal government officials have consistently denied that marijuana has any medical benefits. On the other, the government actually holds patents for the medical use of the plant. Just check out US Patent 6630507 titled "Cannabinoids as antioxidants and neuroprotectants" which is assigned to The United States of America, as represented by the Department of Health and Human Services.

Investigations into the Hypothesis of Transgenic Cannabis (abst – 2011) let's hope Nancy's viewpoint spreads! It would be nice to have an outbreak of sanity and common sense in Washington DC!

Thanks, Nancy!
Plus slightly OT:Drop the Money Bomb on Monsanto!
Excerpt: "Passing this law in California is the first critical step toward requiring GMO labeling in every state."If we don't stop the unscientific unlabeling of GMO food soon, GMO cannabis will eventually pollute the wonder plant!
