Montel Williams Pushes for Medical Marijuana

Baltimore, M.D. -- An emotional Montel Williams joined state lawmakers Monday in Annapolis to urge the General Assembly to legalize medical marijuana. The Baltimore-born talk-show host suffers from multiple sclerosis and says he uses marijuana — and nine other medications — every day to alleviate pain. He said tearfully that traditional opiates don't work for him any longer. "I've used too many," he said.
At his side were state Sens. Jamie Raskin, a Montgomery County Democrat, and David Brinkley, a Frederick County Republican, both cancer survivors. They said that while they don't use marijuana, they can understand why some patients need it.Also backing the proposal is Del. Dan Morhaim, a Baltimore County Democrat who is the General Assembly's only physician."I'm convinced that marijuana has a real medical role," he said. The lawmakers said their legislation to legalize marijuana is tightly crafted to limit marijuana use to patients who have been prescribed the drug by their regular doctors after they have tried other remedies. The bill is similar to legislation that passed the Senate overwhelmingly last year but stalled in the House of Delegates.Morhaim said that he took into account concerns expressed last year by his fellow delegates. He said this year's bill further limits the ways in which physicians can prescribe marijuana and explicitly prohibits all use in motor vehicles. The bill is slated to be introduced this week, its sponsors said. It is expected to have bipartisan support.Source: Baltimore Sun (MD)Author: Julie Bykowicz, The Baltimore SunPublished: January 24, 2011Copyright: 2011 The Baltimore SunContact: letters baltsun.comWebsite: http://www.baltimoresun.com/URL: http://drugsense.org/url/LiOR6T8KCannabisNews Medical Marijuana Archiveshttp://cannabisnews.com/news/list/medical.shtml

It's a plant that belongs to human kind.
We want the prohibitionists to stop killing, hurting, and stalking people over it and we want it back. We want that plant back because it belongs to human kind and no part of human kind has the right to ban it from any other part of human kind. When I first got into this anti-prohibition... anti-drug war activity... I wanted the killing, the imprisoning, the raids, and the horrible injustices by our government to stop. Then, gradually, more and more, I started learning what a wondrous plant the cannabis plant is. We want the injustice stopped... but we want the plant back, too! We want it now!

"It seems equivalent to making land illegal, air illegal, water illegal, or people illegal"Unfortunately, these things already exsist: Private Property, no fly zones, national waters, and illegal immigrants. So, since those things already exsist, it's perfectly understandable why people would think that a plant should be illegal. I hope Montel has better luck in M.D. then he had in IL.

Totally agree, observer!
"Adults should be free to use (as in not arrested or jailed, and able to buy it like they may purchase tobacco or liquor) any plant they desire for any reason, as long as that use does not infringe on the rights of others.Period."I never have been able to wrap my head around the idea of making a plant illegal. It seems equivalent to making land illegal, air illegal, water illegal, or people illegal.

And I thought Montel was using his PULL.
Kind of reminds me of when the 3 Stooges were trying to get into somewhere official and were denied entry, but they noticed reporters being allowed in by showing their "PRESS" buttons. So the stooges took some buttons off of vending machines, and Moe and Larry got in with no problem by showing their "PRESS" buttons. But Curly wasn't as successful when he showed his "PULL" button. Maybe he'd of done better if it said "PUSH".

Arrest/Jail/Prison Re-Framed Away
"I'm convinced that marijuana has a real medical role," he said.I appreciate that the good doctor is convinced. That's a fine thing. Yet, I don't care if the plant in question has all the medical efficacy of oak leaves or ... sand. The fundamental issue is of freedom. We need to be frank about the issue of police with guns, arrests and jail/prison. Notice how that was swept under the rug here, re-framed, and converted into a question of the relative efficacy of medications. Adults should be free to use (as in not arrested or jailed, and able to buy it like they may purchase tobacco or liquor) any plant they desire for any reason, as long as that use does not infringe on the rights of others. Period. It is just that simple. And it is really just common sense. Adults should not be arrested or jailed for pot, any more then they are for sky-diving, snowboarding, scuba-diving, free climbing, bingo, jet-plane ownership, and many other (possibly risky) activities.

''Push'', Again
re: "Montel Williams Pushes for Medical Marijuana"Prohibitionists/Mockingbird media/Mighty Wurlitzer organ grinders, they just can't resist the ol' "push drugs" connotations, can they? "Push" was the suggested title of that syndicated article, and most editors just went with it. How original, fresh and spontaneous - not at all hackneyed, trite, or calculated propaganda. http://mapinc.org/title/push+marijuana
