A Law Everyone in The State Can Feel Good About

Providence, R.I. -- Now that it has overcome Governor Carcieri’s ongoing attempt to impose a statewide ban on compassion, the Rhode Island General Assembly has some questions to answer about these pot shops. Will they be mom-and-pop operations, where a customer can carry a half-gallon of milk and a bag of chips to the counter, then order an ounce of primo weed along with scratch tickets?
Or will they be more like branch banks, with a vault and lots of security and an impersonal exchange with a clerk behind a Plexiglass shield who slides out the goods along with an updated account book? Two pounds, four ounces still available?Visa? Mastercard? American Express? And will there be a Little Rhody Pack of Grass? Will Rhode Island’s legal marijuana carry a Rhode Island brand — grown here, packaged here and tested here to meet the high sensory standards of the Ocean State Reefer Control Board? And who the heck is going to serve on that stimulating body anyway? When the House and Senate voted to override the governor’s veto of a bill to set up dispensaries for medical marijuana, it overcame a rock-solid resistance to enlightened thinking. It also told a lot of sufferers that it is possible even within the confounding confines of the State House to settle down to some caring, commonsense legislation. There are people with multiple sclerosis, AIDS, cancer and the debilitating misery of chemotherapy who can now at least foresee the day when the major obstacle to using legal medical marijuana for the relief of serious pain is removed.People have told me they can’t get through the day without the relief that marijuana provides. But even when it was made legal for medical purposes, there was still the problem of actually getting enough to make a difference. For many, there was still the risk of buying it illegally for legal purposes. Now, the risk could be removed.Obviously, there are still details to be worked out — location, supply, security, cost. In the meantime, we can sit back and enjoy those comically dusty, outdated, overworked, ill-informed references to marijuana that seem drawn from a very old movie in which a man gets crazier by the puff. There will be a lot of lame attempts to belittle the marijuana dispensaries because it’s easier than trying to understand the vital difference between drug abuse and the use of a benign plant to relieve serious pain.Expect to hear frequent references to Cheech and Chong, who have made a career out of goofing on the high life. Expect to hear a lot of people trying to say “dude” in a way that is really clever and derisive. The word “hippie” will enjoy a brief revival, although the last one was seen scrubbing the painted flowers from his VW bus more than 25 years ago.We might even hear the governor say, again, that the dispensaries will mean increased use of marijuana and have a negative impact on the children of the state.Since the dispensaries will deal only with critically ill people carrying doctor’s prescriptions for marijuana, it is difficult to understand how they will increase use. They will only make existing use more risk free. And how, exactly, does a state choosing to relieve the suffering of hundreds of its residents have a negative impact on kids? When all the smoke has cleared and all the tired jabs are used up, Rhode Island will be left with something good. It will be a place where people can relieve their pain without getting arrested.Source: Providence Journal, The (RI)Author: Bob KerrPublished: Friday, June 19, 2009Copyright: 2009 The Providence Journal CompanyContact: letters projo.comWebsite: http://www.projo.com/URL: http://drugsense.org/url/gzkLEkxNRelated Articles: RI Assembly Overrides Veto on Marijuana Centershttp://cannabisnews.com/news/thread24876.shtmlAnother Victory For Marijuana Reformershttp://cannabisnews.com/news/thread24875.shtml

Happy Father's Day, HempWorld.
Happy Father's Day to all the other Dad's that post or visit here.HempWorld, at 8 and 10 years old, there's still time to work on the relationships you have with your children. Don't give up on this life yet. Call them. Write them. Send them cards and presents every chance you get. Make sure they know you love them in any way you can, even if it has to be from a distance.

Thanks for the song. You are great too, sorry I left you out in my comments below.Happy Father's day!I am a father also: I have a daugher of 8, her name is Marley and my son is 10, Miles, but their mother (my ex) has only let my son spend 1 day with me in the last 2 years ... I spent a few days more with my daughter, I hope to catch up this summer but it's not in my control. So, as you can see a lot of people can be unusually cruel and vindictive over lots of different reasons. I hope I'm more lucky in my next lifetime. This is one of the reasons CNEWS has become quite a support for me in the last year, thanks to you all at CNEWS!

"FoM, thanks for understanding our passion and how years of pent up frustration leads to us sometimes spouting off."Indeed. Learning to maintain a demeanor of public civility, relative to the dire circumstances of this prohibition, is good for us as activists and in helping us reach our goals. We're civilized people trying to end extraordinarily uncivilized behavior on the part of our government and prohibitionists. It helps if we can keep from "Losing it" any more than we have to. It's another aspect of C-News that has been very helpful in growing us into the activists that, hopefully, we are.

I believe we should treat our enemies with the same courtesy as we wish to be treated. What we give we get. If we can keep our cool and walk away when it becomes too hard to handle and stay silent we are stronger then someone who blows off and let's hate guide them. I have seen hate one too many times in my life. I don't think anything constructive can come from hate. Hate only hurts the hater. I know men that think that way too.

HempWorld and FoM
To quote the Pointer Sisters, "we are family."HempWorld, I'm so glad you understood I wasn't chastising you. I've been around here for over eight years and I've seen the way certain things bother FoM. People have pushed her too far and it hurts her, which ultimately hurts the rest of us who care about her. I'm guilty of that too, even though that was never my intention, and I've done my fair share of apologizing.FoM, thanks for understanding our passion and how years of pent up frustration leads to us sometimes spouting off. I will have to admit that even things posted by many of the now banned former posters don't even come close to the vitriol and venomous postings that are commonplace on a daily basis on many other websites. For that I am grateful. The point is that we may argue amongst each other but we usually make up and that makes this website pretty special. The Reverend Bud Green

The DEA reads C/News but the DEA does not learn
from C/news. It is what I call rented minds. So far as you can pay an ex-jock or some clown trained by the military to kill a hundred differedt ways, what kind of work are they qulified for if not bashing down doors, killing and terrorizing innocent citizens. You won't find many of them performing rocket surgery!Nixon nearly gushed when he explained how he modeled the DEA after 1930s Domestic Police in Germany. Nixon so admired the orginizational skills of the Germans that he often mentioned it.They are tax payer funded profit guardians of the mega-corps. In particular they work for the FDA protected drug pushers.Their existance is unconstitutional. there behaviour, demeanor, and purpose is evil. Which beloved realative would you sic them on?

Thank You FoM!
I understand what you are saying. However, one thing, if the DEA and now ICE are reading this blog then they are not doing their job. That is what I think. I don't think people with a lot to hide, post on CNEWS. I put everything on the web, I have nothing to hide, speaking for myself. It is not easy for me, however to travel, so maybe that's the price I pay. But with the internet, who needs to travel (if you live in sunny So Cal).I have lost half my family to the war (WWII) and the other half to cigarettes, that is where I'm coming from.

Thank you. I don't understand some humor. I am so concerned about how close we are to positive change that I don't want to have the open ears of those who are listening, and can do something about it, to wonder about us. I look at it this way. We have many people who read CNews and I'm sure some are DEA and some are those who are involved in politics. All these years I have been trying to represent cannabis in a manner that she deserves. She has dignity, kindness, and shouldn't be put in a corner. I am not anti establishment really. I understand how complex and big our country is and I try to remember that because of the Internet different people will read and decide based on how we act rather then what they know about marijuana. So I guess that's how I look it these days.I love to laugh and laugh a lot but I am very careful with what I think is funny because of others that are invisible because they only read CNews.

Dear FoM,
You are a kind and wonderful person, thank you for all that you do! I am sorry that you took it the wrong way. BGreen understood and tried to explain. This was wonderful too. I think we all intend to be good in the end. With only a few years left to live (earth), I've changed my attitude; but I still try to laugh at things even if they are terrifying and completely go against the grain of logic. It's sort of like, survival of the funniest ... call it concentration camp humor ...Ps. FoM if you feel an apology is necessary; I apologize. Ps.s. I once posted to Museman, which a appreciate a lot, that in one of his postings, he made my day. So, you see, I mean it in a positive way.

MMJ Transforms Into Big Business in Israel
Medical Marijuana Transforms Into Big Business in Israel ***
By Haim Shadmi, Haaretz Correspondent

June 20, 2009 How did Yohai Golan-Gild go from being an organizer of psychedelic drug parties to being a provider of medicinal marijuana in Israel - with the full approval of the Health Ministry? "The 90s were the golden age of chemicals," Golan-Gild said. "In every forest clearing there were people taking ecstasy and LSD and dancing themselves silly. People didn't get married unless pills were promised to the guests. Thousands protested at Rabin Square urging us to 'give trance a chance.' There was a feeling that something was about to change. But in Israel, people love to party, but they don't love paying for it. I lost millions, I collapsed financially, and that is how I found myself in California. Very quickly, I became the owner of three grow houses of medicinal marijuana, until six months ago, when I go a phone call from my American friend Rick Doblin." The path taken by Golan-Gild represents the quiet but fascinating revolution that Israeli society has undergone over the last decade. In 1999, the Health Ministry legalized the use of Cannabis, the plant from which marijuana and hashish are derived, for use by patients suffering from serious symptoms such as pain, nausea and loss of appetite. As the cultivation of the Cannabis plant became legal, the number of patients prescribed medicinal marijuana grew from two in 2000 to more than 700 today. The number is expected to reach 1,200 within three months. Cannabis growing is on the verge of becoming an economic goldmine and entrepreneurs seeking to tap its potential are eyeing the endeavor. The consumption of cannabis products, which was completely forbidden up until ten years ago, is now becoming regulated and may eventually gain the status of any other drug supplied to the general public. I never thought of Bush just Eastwood. We are living in good but strange and sometimes scary times. I have seen one too many threats againt our President. The right wing people are very angry and I think having calmer heads will do us better in these times. I think acting like adults won't be anything but smart. We are making progress. The drug war will continue but medical marijuana is moving right along. I don't want to blow it when we are this close to maybe even getting cannabis re-scheduled.

I thought those were quotes from GW Bush. LOLSeriously, I understand what you mean but I didn't take those comments as a threat, just as a reaffirmation from HempWorld that he's not afraid to defend his rights, even with the new warriors who are hell-bent on destroying his life.Perception is everything, as David Letterman has recently taught us.I guess I've seen so much real hatred thrown right at me that I only see the humor anymore. The Reverend Bud Green

IMMIGRATION AGENTS AUTHORIZED TO PARTICIPATE IN DRUG ENFORCEMENTThe agreement will allow an "unlimited" number of ICE agents to be cross-designated as DEA agents, giving them the authority to investigate suspected drug smugglers at the border and internationally -- a prerogative that in the past has been jealously guarded by the DEA. Bring it on! Go ahead, make my day!

Another opportunity for education
But not the kind (no pun intended) that the prohibs want. All these measures regarding MMJ, as progressive as they are, still cannot answer the very real and serious question of cannabis prohibition, itself. What these MMJ laws do help with is pointing out the rank stupidity of cannabis prohibition in toto. Have enough of that happen, and the very 'soft' public support for cannabis prohibition will completely collapse...which is just what the prohibs are terrified of. Which is why they fight these measures tooth-and-nail.But they're engaged in a 'forlorn hope', a rearguard action. The Perfect Storm has arrived in the form of the sour(ing) economy, attrition amongst the pre-Boomer generation that blindly accepted as Gospel everything the government told them, the aging Boomer population that knows the truth and wants MMJ, and the advent of an information source (the 'Net) that cannot be controlled and suborned as the previous media were. There are a great many other factors, of course, but these serve to demonstrate that a confluence of forces have arrived to work in concert and that those forces favor an end to cannabis prohibition in particular and drug prohibition in general. The iron is hot; the anvil is waiting. NOW IS THE TIME to pick up the hammer and start pounding as we never have before. This chance comes but once every generation. Mine dropped the ball, last time, by being complacent, and things weren't as bad then as they are now. But we've been given a second chance; let's not blow it.
