Medical Marijuana Proposal Advances in Michigan

Lansing, Mich. -- Michigan voters are a step closer to considering whether marijuana should be legalized for medical purposes. The Board of State Canvassers OK’d petitions today to put the issue before state lawmakers. If lawmakers don’t approve the measure within 40 days, the proposal will be placed on the November ballot for voters to decide.
That may be the most likely scenario since lawmakers haven’t acted on similar legislation introduced in recent years.Michigan law prohibits marijuana use for any reason. But roughly a dozen other states permit medicinal use by patients. The Michigan initiative would allow patients to grow and use small amounts of marijuana for relief from pain associated with cancer, AIDS, multiple sclerosis and other diseases.A doctor’s approval or recommendation would be required to use the drug. Registry cards would be created so law enforcement personnel could tell who was a registered patient with the OK to use the drug.Voters in at least five Michigan cities — Ann Arbor, Detroit, Ferndale, Flint and Traverse City — have passed ballot initiatives allowing for medicinal marijuana use in the past few years. The votes were mostly symbolic, however, since state and federal laws prohibit use of the drug. I was so ecstatic when I heard the news
I knew it was coming, but it's nice to know it's official!Hope- Thank you so much! It does feel good to know I was part of making history here in Michigan. This being certified makes the concerts, festivals, bar nights, grocery store days, and other events I attended to gather signatures all seem worth it. Seeing this all over the local news is great! And we will prevail.FoM- Thank you for always being here. You always have a positive outlook on things and seem to see the best in everything and that's why I love you and love to come here. It's so nice to see all these Michigan articles. Finally it's our chance to shine and our chance to show the world what the people really want.RevRay- We won't let you down! Then hopefully Iowa will be one of the next dominoes to fall :)Gloovins and Afterburner- Congrats my fellow Michiganders! I agree that people here in Michigan are ready for this. And although I met many people during the summer and fall who are very much against it, far more people I talked with totally supported it. And I have a good feeling that will show after the vote. This will be a huge win, maybe 70% or more. You guys attending Hash Bash?

Michigan & medical cannabis
This issue, I know, is huge in Michigan. They are tired of more laws and less freedom there. And their economy? Worse than any other state (esp the real estate mkt). People have no confidence anymore their in local & state government. Michigan is consistantly in the top 5 states annually for cannabis seized so this (& the fact that they border Canada that is mostly against water) will I'm sure get the "top" Mich governmint officials a call from the good ole' ONDCP and maybe, er, definitly a "top" govermint white house official will blow in early this November -- only to spew forth tax-payer funded lies & deceit. I can see it coming now. But, the will of the Michigan voters is strong. There are many, many hard working, middle class & responsible cannabis users in the state. One needs to be ready to combat the gov't inevitable "What about the children, what will be the message we are sending them...?" Ok, what would you want your child getting somehow access to (b/c you failed as a parent & let yr child gain access) ALCOHOL or CANNABIS? Remember, alcohol is toxic, cannabis is not."But this will put the good citizens of the State of Michigan in direct conflict with federal law, don't you see?"Actually 99% of the possesion of marihuana charges come at the state level."This is just the drug legalization movement's first push to get all drugs legal, don't you see?"Ahh, yeah, can't wait to get that voter initiative in 2010 going for medicinal crack and crystal meth. Those are sure to pass...right."This is a bunch of marihuana legalizers who are using this small group of sick people to get the drug legal for their own personal use, see?"MMMM, yeah I'm sure the cancer and aids and chrone's disease etc etc victim's got their disease so they could smoke some - legally - we would never want to help anyone - especially the sick and dying. We're just a bunch of legalizers who could by no way be, ahhh, maybe sick themselves and could benefit. No, we all just can't wait to open that 1st dispensiary and all the fun that comes with the busy busy lovely DEA & the IRS, too. Yep, you figured us all out, how's that? Darn. The feds win again...not.This will pass in November despite all the bull$hit that the opponents will cast the voters of Michigan's way. Mark my words here & now, March 3, 2008.I know alot about Michiganders and their voters because I am one!Long live freedom in Michigan! Let the healing begin in November when this passes.
