Sacramento, CA -- State legislators are expected to consider a measure this week that would allow hemp to be grown in California, rekindling the debate over whether such a move would increase cultivation of illegal marijuana and conflict with federal laws regulating the drug. A committee of the state Senate is scheduled today to review legislation to permit California farmers to grow industrial hemp. The bill - AB684 - would establish a five-year pilot program in several California counties and define "industrial hemp" as separate from "marijuana" under the state's Health and Safety Code.
Last year, a similar bill reached the desk of Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger, but he vetoed it, saying he was "very concerned that this bill would give legitimate growers a false sense of security and a belief that production of 'industrial hemp' is somehow a legal activity under federal law." The new bill was co-authored by Assemblymen Mark Leno, D-San Francisco, and Chuck DeVore, R-Irvine (Orange County), the same lawmakers who pushed last year's hemp legislation. "It's such an incredible crop," said Leno, referring to the versatility of hemp. Hemp seed oil is used in soaps, lotions, shampoos and deodorant, as well as in such foods as hemp milk, snack bars, shakes and candy. The oil also can be converted into fully biodegradable plastics. Hemp fibers are used to make clothing and paper. Similar to the marijuana consumed for recreational or medicinal use, hemp is a form of the plant Cannabis sativa L. But unlike marijuana, hemp has less than 1 percent of tetrahydrocannabinol - or THC, the plant's primary psychoactive ingredient - making it ineffective for use as a drug. The reason I can't go back to dial up is because of being able to move faster then dial up. I just did a speed test and my download speed is 995 kbps and upload speed is 143 kbps. That's what I mean when I say I'm all dressed up and nowhere to go. LOL!

Oh no.
That's such a disappointment. With things what they are, I've become rather accustomed to plodding so I guess I'll be satisfied with plodding for awhile longer. Those long contracts shriek to me that something is not really good about what they are offering and they want to get you in a choke hold that you can't get out of...because you WILL want to get out of it.If I have to plod, I'd rather not have to pay more for doing it than I already do.

I checked and Dish Network is using Wild Blue. That's just like mine. Hughesnet and Wildblue have the same problems and have a FAP policy. I am looking forward to high speed over the electric lines and not needing a dish.

If Dish Network has DSL I will switch. My satellite is not working very well these last few days and it's really annoying. I won't call tech support because I can't understand them since they are from India. They are nice but nice doesn't help when you can't understand what they are saying.

We probably have Dish Network. Right...I pay no attention to it. Just checked their site and they have DSL. It seems expensive. I've never bothered to get even slightly tech savvy about any of this, so I'm not sure what they're offering. I'll check with the Republican and see what he thinks about it. That 18 month contract business has an ominous tone to it, though.

This would be people who have DirecTV. They are so close in programming switching might be worth it if the price is right. Maybe you wouldn't have to switch. It is annoying because it costs about $70 a month. One thing I learned long ago that there are benefits to living in the country but we are always behind the times with technology. I think within a few years we will have high speed broadband without restrictions. I'm keeping my fingers crossed.

I'm sorry. I forgot that you weren't here when Hughesnet made this policy. People were downloading movies and music and it bottlenecked the satellite so now if in a 24 hour period we use over 200 MBs we get shut down to slower then a bad dial up speed like 14 for a full 24 hour period as a punishment. FAP means fair access policy. I read a HughesNet broadband forum and it is sad because people don't know and get hooked up with HughesNet and if you watch a couple Youtube videos you can hit your limited in very little time. I went to Ice Road Truckers web site and they had a video on the page and it took up a lot of bandwidth. I don't go to big web sites anymore either. I can't wait until Governor Strickland gets Ohio Broadband Network set up. He wants broadband for all 88 counties and we are in the first 10 counties that will get broadband over the electric wires I think. I am so glad we have a Democrat as Governor because they seem to care about us country folk and our past republican governor didn't care about us at all. Do you mean a video by Jones? Because of the FAP policy I can't watch videos anymore. I can't wait until I can have real broadband or at least like it was before the FAP policy was put in place. I believe that in every conspiracy theory there is truth but not enough to convince me. I don't look close at them but look to where we are going in society more then anything. I think Obama answered the medical marijuana question. He said he knows it has benefits but it is still against Federal Law. That means he should be asked about how to change the Federal Law or who would he like to appoint in areas that would deal with scheduling drugs.I like Governor Richardson but I am not a gambling person. I look at what the majority of people want and will stand with them to make sure we don't get another Republican in 08.

MPP is trying to get Barack Obama to take a position that he will call off the federal raids on California. I think I will be able to be more supportive of him if he does this or even better were he to say more and do more for us than Hillary Clinton and John Edwards have said they would. Right now the best candidate as far as our issue is still Bill Richardson, I think.

I think what will matter will be the early caucuses and primaries. Until then it's just a lot of assumptions that people make and historically front-runners in the early days do not always win. Many more people do use the internet now than four years ago, too.

I thought that easy to get prescription drugs like Oxycontin could fuel major drug addiction. Then they'll need treatment centers and on it goes. Then if they can't get those drugs heroin use could start. They seem to create the whole thing.

Encouraged now, by the last legislature and easier to do. Buying lots and lots of special equipment for everybody! Whoo Hoo...money to blow! I'm pretty sure they don't even have to get any sort of warrant now, or at least after Sept. 1 when the new wire tap laws go into effect. Claiming it's about terrorism....but we know what it will really be about more often than not. If the terrorist did what they did and are a danger to us because they "hate our freedom"...they got what they wanted out of it, didn't they?*sigh*

But Schwarzenegger's political future demands that he veto this again (and again, and again and again). So unless we have another governor...We have Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger to thank for the fact that California is way behind in the eco-industry, we are crippled by a political hack who put his own interests ahead of that of the state or the people of California. Thank you Mr. Governor, tremendous job! The prison guard union is the largest union in California and these campaign contributions come in handy when you want to buy more votes! This is how it works.Also, this bill proposes that we 'study' hemp for 5 years. As if the world's oldest cash crop needs to be studied all over again. Canada has been cultivating hemp for over 8 years, wouldn't it be more efficient to go pay them a visit instead of studying for another 5 years? (but only if we are really lucky see beginning of story above)
