Feds Still Ostriches On Medical Marijuana

California -- at the University of California, San Francisco, have presented more evidence of medical benefits from marijuana. The UCSF study concluded that HIV patients who smoked three joints of marijuana per day experienced relief from chronic foot pain associated with the disease. By contrast, previous studies of marinol — the FDA-approved drug containing a synthetic version of THC, an active ingredient in cannabis — showed little promise in relief for HIV-associated neuropathy, a peripheral nerve disorder that causes intense, sharp pain, numbness and tingling in the hands and feet.
Doctors concluded marijuana contains properties in addition to THC that lead to effective relief for HIV patients. In fact, the UCSF study tested patients who smoked cannabis as opposed to smoking a placebo. Patients who smoked cannabis experienced a 34 percent reduction in intense foot pain; the first cannabis cigarette patients smoked reduced chronic pain 72 percent as opposed to 15 percent for those who smoked the placebo. Though three joints a day could probably relieve many pains and assorted ailments, it's still another key piece of evidence that shows how marijuana can be a big benefit in the medical field. Cannabis also has been effective in other cases, such as bringing relief to cancer patients who experience pain and nausea from chemotherapy treatments. A 1999 report by the Institute of Medicine said that though marijuana is a strong drug, it is safe and should not be excluded from medical uses. We agree. Yet even as the evidence mounts about the benefits of marijuana as a medicine, federal officials and agencies continue to bury their heads in the sand, still believing the scare tactics about marijuana of the 1960s that are virtually laughable in this day and age. In the case of HIV patients suffering from neuropathy, treatment generally consists of antidepressants and seizure drugs, but those medications often don't work and some patients can't tolerate them. In fact, the FDA has not approved any drugs specifically for that condition. Can you imagine being such a patient, knowing something like marijuana is out there and can help, yet government puts it out of reach? These people aren't drug addicts; this isn't an "Animal House" party — these are people with a chronic illness who need help. Let's face it — many available painkillers, if abused, can be dangerous, even deadly, but they can be obtained via a doctor's prescription. Yet here we are with growing mounds of evidence, and federal officials still can't bring themselves to agree that marijuana, if treated as an doctor-prescribed painkiller, can be effective and beneficial to many patients. Organizations are calling for Congressional hearings to discuss possibly legalizing marijuana for medical use. An Oakland advocacy group is taking the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services to court demanding that it change its stance on pot's medical value. We hope federal courts and lawmakers take a good hard look at the benefits of marijuana treatment, examine the evidence and come to the conclusion that we're not talking about hard-core drugs like heroin or opium — we're talking about safe pain relief for those who need it most.Source: Argus, The (Fremont, CA)Published: February 26, 2007Copyright: 2007 ANG NewspapersWebsite: http://www.insidebayarea.com/argus/Contact: http://www.insidebayarea.com/argus/writealetterRelated Articles:Truth and Medical Marijuanahttp://cannabisnews.com/news/thread22683.shtmlMedical Marijuana Activists Cite Little-Known Law http://cannabisnews.com/news/thread22677.shtmlU.S. Is Sued Over Position on Marijuana http://cannabisnews.com/news/thread22675.shtmlUnprecedented SF Study Finds Pot Helps Ease Painhttp://cannabisnews.com/news/thread22634.shtml

It's great to hear that story of what you and your saner neighbors did with that stray dog situation. I know it meant the world to those families that had lost their pets. Most people don't take the time to be considerate at all anymore. They would have just called the pound. More goodness and kindness in the world is a good thing...always.I've always taught my kids to not run from dogs. I taught them to avoid them and never challenge them by looking them in the eyes. But running? I've never seen that work out well. I'll never forget when I was a kid myself, hearing an uproar of dogs and screaming going down the street. A kid was running and screaming for all he was worth and every dog in the neighborhood, about twenty of them, of all sizes and kinds, was right behind him, barking and joining in the fun of a chase. If he hadn't been running...they wouldn't have chased him. I never saw anything like it before or since. They didn't hurt the boy.I did climb a sign post once when I was a child walking home from school to get away from a dog that I knew had it in for me for some reason. One of the few dogs that ever did. I even remember her breed and name. She was a Boxer named Pandora. That has to be some sort of signifigant incident...being run up a sign post by Pandora...the Boxer. *smile* Unless you know you can really outrun a dog...the running just means the chase is on...for even the gentlest of dogs.

Thank you. I watched the trailer and that is the kind of movie I would love to see. "There is something about the outside of a horse...that is good for the inside of a man." ~Winston Churchill~I hope they make a movie about Barbaro. Michael Matz is working with a full brother or sister of Barbaro. I think he or she is a year and a half old now. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Barbaro

Interesting for you to mention that, about fostering. The girl at the local pound asked me to call her to let her know how everything turns out. When I called back to tell her the dogs have been returned, she thanked me several times for handling the situation the way we did. So I told her that I was at her pound about 3 weeks ago and wanted to leave my phone number and telephone number in case they came across a dog I was looking for, and was told that they do not keep a list like that, and I would have to just keep checking back with them. So I told her about our departed “Baby Girl” and asked her if she would keep my phone number and call if they get a dog like that. She said she would. Then she said they have a dog that matches my description, but it was a male dog (we are looking for a female). She said the dog was stressing out and some of its Jet Black hair is falling off and she was worried about him. She said the people that adopted the dog the first time brought him back in after about a month, and had no idea why they didn’t want the dog; she said they go through this all the time. I guess people get dogs, realize the responsibility that comes with them, and then they don’t want to deal with it.Last night I threw a proposal on the table with my bride. I said how about me calling the girl up at the pound and tell her we will take the dog in until they find a home for him. I don’t think they do this at this shelter, but I thought I’d give it a try anyhow. Bride said immediately without hesitation “good idea” and that she would be willing to do that too.

Let me mention this. When my first Rott died I didn't have any dogs. We decided that we never wanted to be without at least one dog. Kaptin and Sassy are good friends and I know I made the right decision. If you have two dogs since dogs are pack animals they should be happier. Think about two and then you will never be without a dog when the time comes for one to pass away. I'll give Kaptin and Sassy a good rub for you. Have you ever thought of being a person that takes in a dog until they are adopted? You would be really good doing that service.

It's a Dogs World
Hey Toker Give Elvis a scratch behind the ear for me, and a kiss on the forehead.FoM, give Kaptin & Sassy a good rub for me too! I’ve been using Petfinder.I found one, but the girl in charge will absolutely not put her on a plane for shipment, or even other types of transportation, absolutely not. She said I would have to drive to her location, period. She also said she didn’t want to adopt of out of state, even though it is advertised in another state also. She said they have someone who travels between the two states, and the dog can ride in the car if they needed to move her.I’m on lists to receive a dog from two other shelter groups. My “Baby Girl” is on her way; I just don’t know how long it will take for her to get here. :)

What an absolutely wonderful story. Bless your heart for caring. I don't know if I ever mentioned this to you but I found my husky type dog at http://www.Petfinder.com You can type in your zip code and ask for a picture. You can check the dogs that are available for adoption in your area that way. I would do it again when the time comes to get another dog. This was the picture I saw on Petfinder.com and called and got her and named her Sassy. She was about 6 months old then. She didn't get much taller but she filled out nicely and she is a sweetheart. http://www.freedomtoexhale.com/sassy.jpg

Thank God!!!
For Dogs… and Neil Young too!Still haven’t found a dog yet, but…Saturday morning, a crazy woman who lives next door started screaming at the top of her lungs, “PIT BULL, RUN, EVERYBODY RUN, THAT’S A PIT BULL, GET IN THE HOUSE, RUN SHUT THE DOOR!!!”I stepped out front to see what in the world is going on with these people now. I saw a German Shepherd Mix, running with a small/medium Pit Bull Dog about 20 feet away. I opened the gate, called them over, and in the fence they went. The Pit Bull stopped on it’s way in and licked me on the face. Now the neighbor on the other side of the street is really cool, he heard that screaming too, (he will be called “Matchbox” here in this forum). But his 9-year-old boy was one of the kids “crazy lady” told to run, and he did. Matchbox saw this and told his kid to stop and turn around, and when he did the Pit Bull caught up to him and started to lick him all over the place. Matchbox saw me at the fence ready to get them in the gate, backed off and let them come my way, no problem.“Crazy Lady” opened her front door, Matchbox told her that I had the dogs secured in the fence, and the dogs are friendly there’s’ no problem. She yelled “I’M CALLING THE COPS” and slammed her door shut.An hour later the local Police showed up. He wanted to call animal control to get the dogs, because of “Crazy Lady”. I told “officer friendly” that the dogs were okay and I would just keep them here, and within hours people will be walking up and down the street or driving real slow looking for their lost dogs. I pointed out to him how healthy and good shape that they were in that you could tell they were cared well for and somebody is going to be out looking for them. He said 2 times that he could call animal control to see if they were micro chipped. When I asked him the procedure, he responded they would come out and take the dogs back to the shelter, and scan them. I said that I didn’t want these dogs going to a shelter environment (dog jail), and asked if they could come here and scan the dogs, then take the info back to the shelter and call back. Officer Friendly said the only way they will be scanned; the dogs would have to go with them. I told him I would rather keep them here for now until the owners showed up. He reluctantly said he was interested in the Bull Dog. So I called the dogs over, and as Officer Friendly was reaching down inside our fence, these two dogs were licking and kissing him all over his arm, up and down. And he finally gave up the hard ass routine, smiled and said, “these dogs are really friendly aren’t they? especially the Pit Bull.” I said “Yes they are” So he agreed to not call animal control and told me to make sure they didn’t get loose. Crazy Lady told them there were three dogs and Officer Friendly asked about the third one, so I told him the deal about her over reacted panic, and how she was really making a big deal over a small incident, and these are the only two dogs I saw. He thanked me and left.Back to Matchbox, Matchbox and myself have a good neighborly relation. And these people that live in that house next door keep lying, conniving, all kind of stuff, nobody really wants anything to do with them, everybody just kinda tolerates them. Their whole family that lives there are rude and unfriendly. Well matchbox told me he didn’t appreciate her screaming at those kids to run from a dog, especially his kid. We gathered Matchbox’s son up and we showed him what to do instead of running when a stray dog comes around. If those dogs had been mean, “Crazy Lady’s” screaming could have gotten one of those kids bitten.Well the dogs spent the night here. I took a quick ride around the area to see if I could spot someone searching for these two. Nothing at all. Sunday morning I rode all over looking for posters stapled on the telephone poles, or people who looked like they might be looking for a lost dog, no luck. I even asked people who were out in their yard or jogging if the have seen anybody looking for a dog. Notta!!!I called the local dog pound to see if I could get these dogs scanned for the microchip with out turning them over, or bringing them in. I even asked if I could get the scanner from them and scan the dogs here, then return with the scanner. That was an absolute No, that scanner will not leave the property!!!. But she told me that I could bring the dogs down and she would scan them in the front entrance. So I got the neighbor who lives on the other side of us to use her truck to transport the dogs. She is an animal lover, and when I asked she said she would love to do that. So we took them down one at a time, when we got in the parking lot I told the girl I was going to see if they would come to the truck with the scanner instead of bringing the dog inside, she said stay with the dog and she will go in. About a minute later here comes the girl I talked to over the phone, walking to the truck with the scanner in her hand. The first dog had no chip so we came back here to get the other one. The second one we took had a chip. We got the name of the dogs; it’s owner, address, and telephone number. The people at the shelter called the number and had to leave a voice message. We dropped the first one off at the address given, and they told us the other one belongs next door, so we came back here, got the other one and brought it over to them. These people were very happy to see their dogs, they were really surprised when they walked out and saw them. They said they looked all over, called out their names and all. They said they had given up. They thought somebody took the dogs in for themselves to keep. They said that they didn’t even think about coming around where we lived. He had a tear in his eye when he said that. One dog had a collar but no info on it, and the other had no collar at all. I said to them if there was a phone number on it I would have called. They told us they would get another tag for both of them, and new collars.Sunday Night the father of the family, who owned one of the dogs, called and thanked my bride for not letting animal control take the dogs. He had called before I even got back from dropping it off. I think he might have been at work, and it was his cell phone number listed as a contact, and that is why the shelter got his voice mail. These dogs were very active Saturday, but Saturday Night I could tell they were homesick and wanted to go home. They were happy to be here and had fun but you could tell they missed their owners. Sunday morning they were more relaxed. They knew something was up when we separated them while having them scanned Sunday afternoon. You could tell So any how the dogs were happy to be back home, the owners were happy to get them back, and we were happy to have two super energetic dogs around to rub on in between their running around and carrying on for a day. We really needed that. It came at a good time. I’ve been longing to pet and scratch a dog. After it was over the neighbor girl who helped me with the transportation part said she felt really good about getting these dogs back to there home, and so did I.This old world can beat me up, stab me in the back, kick me in the teeth, take my money, slander my name all over the place, but they can’t EVER take that from me. THANK GOD!!!

Something we already know
In today's feature article, we examine the disturbing contradictions in America's drug policy, where kids are dosed up on prescription "speed" while plants with medicinal potential like marijuana are eradicated with pesticides from DEA helicopters. As you'll soon see, the meth problem facing America today is actually made worse by drug laws that seek to protect Big Pharma profits while ignoring reality. Click the headline below for the full story.Health: War on Drugs targets natural medical sources while meth epidemic worsens in the U.S.Methamphetamine is a highly addictive psychostimulant drug that can have horrifying side effects, but perhaps the most shocking thing about this drug is that the FDA and Big Business may be contributing to its spread in pursuit of profits...http://www.newstarget.com:80/021649.html

That BBC story is incredible, isn't it?! Why were they reporting WTC7's collapse fully 23 minutes before it happened? Obviously, it's because it was planned with malice aforethought, and those plans included timely press notification, but someone screwed up and "notified" too early! No doubt some will try to explain it away as some kind of satellite linkup problem or some other ridiculous thing, but there is no way around the truth of what it means.

OT: Let's stop this crazy SOBush!
Dear MoveOn member,Last Tuesday, a second US aircraft carrier arrived in the Sea of Oman off the southern coast of Iran1 giving a whole new meaning to the term "escalation." The Bush administration is hell-bent on sending 48,000 more troops to Iraq against the wishes of most Americans, but now it seems like they might not stop there. While the war in Iraq grows worse by the day, the White House seems to be turning its sights toward neighboring Iran which could escalate the current conflict into a regional one. This reckless move comes despite the fact that most experts believe diplomacy is the way to go with Iran.President Bush is out of control, and Congress needs to step in immediately to rein him in. Please sign this petition to Congress asking that they require the president seek their authorization before taking military action in Iran. Clicking here will add your name to the petition:http://pol.moveon.org/noescalationiniran/o.pl?id=9937-6910519-M5rm.Y&t=3The President claimed that Iran is aiding the Iraqi insurgency, but analysts continue to cast doubt on the evidence. Even General Peter Pace of the Joint Chiefs of Staff has questioned the claims that the Iranian government is directly involved.2 After all, we are already in a war founded on disproved claims of WMDs.But the reporting of this news is just the latest. Already we have two aircraft carriers in the region—unprecedented outside of war—and Patriot missiles have been deployed. Neither of these will help to protect our troops in Iraq where most of the fighting is on the ground. One thing is clear—military action in Iran would further endanger our troops in Iraq and threaten to destabilize the entire Middle East. It could even prop up the Iranian president who is quickly losing popularity in his own country. We have options: Experts say that sanctions and diplomacy can work. They just worked with North Korea, where we reached a deal last week for them to disarm. And we owe it to our troops to use all of our resources before sending them into harm's way. UN sanctions just went into effect late last week, and the UN Security Council is meeting again today to discuss options. We need to give this process a chance to work before provoking a regional conflict.Sen. Hillary Clinton has provided some much needed leadership on this:It would be a mistake of historical proportion if the Administration thought that the 2002 resolution authorizing force against was a blank check for the use of force against Iran without further Congressional authorization. Nor should the President think that the 2001 resolution authorizing force after the terrorist attacks of 9/11, in any way, authorizes force against Iran. If the Administration believes that any, any use of force against is necessary, the President must come to Congress to seek that authority.3Can you send a message to your representatives to join Hillary in demanding that Congress check our out-of-contol president?Clicking here will add your name to the petition:http://pol.moveon.org/noescalationiniran/o.pl?id=9937-6910519-M5rm.Y&t=4Please also support General Wesley Clark and Iraq veterans who have also mounted a petition against war with Iran, just announced today at:http://www.StopIranWar.comGeneral Wesley Clark helped them launch their effort with these words:War with Iran is not the answer now. AP report
Patients could not grow the drug, but rather would obtain it from the Department of Health, which would have it grown in a secure, in-state facility.Wow, I've seen a lot of interesting thing, but I've never seen someone put a seed into dirt and have a drug come up. Plants grow, drugs don't grow.Mom always said, drugs don't grow on trees.Seriously, it just shows how weird and 1984ish our world has become that the AP would refer to "growing the drug" for cannabis. that's ridiculous and absurd statement.

Feds Still Ostriches On Medical Marijuana. Not
really if you consider that the Federal Government has had and currently still has a compassionate use program for the 5 remaining patients. These highly priviliged individuals get a cannister of marijuana cigarettes every month for medical use. This clearly indicates that medical use is recognized by the US Federal government but only for them. Now how come this does not apply to the rest of the country?
Nobody Can Stop This!

Before I really ever heard of Obama, except the speech he gave which was wonderful at the Democratic Convention in 04, I thought Al Gore was the one that was needed. Emotionally I like Obama because he is such a breath of fresh air in a system that is so corrupt. He is only 45 so if he doesn't make it because of lack of experience he might in years to come. I believe we are returning to the values of years ago no matter if it's Gore or Obama or another good Democrat. I'm flexible because I always feel that's how we should be. Let go and let it happen.

Awesome! I just missed the news report!
A GREAT day for New Mexico, and the USA!(looking forward to our secession from the US, and all of the states with 'New' in them should start now)!Bill Richardson is another likely front-runner IMHO, and is a Scorpio FOM, the Eagle variety, like you! Gore, Obama, Kucinich, Edwards, Richardson, the deck is stacked with great candidates, Hillary is the Media Pick to lose to Rudy or MadCain!Hillary is still evolving out of the Reptilian Scorpio phase, a little late though, she could shed her tail, though I doubt it!Gary Johnson is still the main person I thank for todays' legislative progress, he put his governorship on the line to end Cannabis Prohibition, and we should name a bill to legalize for general use after him, don't ya think? Please join the Iraq War veterans at VoteVets.org and me and sign the petition to President Bush today. Military force against Iran is not the solution now, and if we adopt the right strategy, perhaps it need never be. Urge him to work with our allies and use every diplomatic, political, and economic option at our disposal to deal with Iran. War is not the answer.
http://www.stopiranwar.com/On Al Gore, he had the election stolen from him, and Karma has, as of last night, in front on 1 Billion people world-wide, he took over Bill Clinton's title of World Leader, thankfully! He would be a shoo-in for president, and I believe the truth about 2000 will come out late this year, and he will have the title of President restored to him in 2008.With the Oscars, a Nobel Peace Prize, the success of the 7/7/07 Global Earth concerts, and headlines like these, he has little to worry about:Gore wins Hollywood in a Landslidehttp://thecaucus.blogs.nytimes.com/2007/02/25/gore-wins-hollywood-in-a-landslide/when the truth comes out in a MAJOR way, as it will, Gore will look like the guy who had something stolen from him, and America will make sure he gets it back!He has truly earned it, more than anyone, even including OBAMA and DENNIS Kucinich, with his work with Katrina victims, Global Warming and saving the Planet Earth, and his constitutionally mandated purpose in righting one of the greatest wrongs unleashed on mankind, GEORGE W. BUSH and the stolen election of 2000!(which lead to the second stolen election of 2004, and is a logical precursor to the stealing of a third election in 2008, likely by bush declaring Martial Law and canceling the elections, and making himself permanent Diktator and Military Commander)!Does anyone here NOT see that happening, as it is the logical progression for this guy, if he gets his war on Iran, and permanent war after that.........

NM: MMJ Bill passes Hostile Committee
SANTA FE (AP) - A bill to legalize the medical use of marijuana has cleared its biggest hurdle. The House Agriculture and Water Resources Committee voted 5-2 to pass the measure. Its sponsor, Senator Gerald Ortiz y Pino, says he’s optimistic it will reach the full House for a vote. The measure already has passed the Senate. The bill would set up a program in the state Department of Health under which patients with certain debilitating conditions or in hospice care could be certified to use marijuana.Patients could not grow the drug, but rather would obtain it from the Department of Health, which would have it grown in a secure, in-state facility.Governor Richardson supports the bill.http://www.kobtv.com/index.cfm?viewer=storyviewer&id=30659&cat=NMTOPSTORIES
