THORNDIKE, Maine (AP) Police have charged a dairy farmer in Thorndike with drug trafficking after finding opium poppies and marijuana at his farm.
Maine Drug Enforcement Agency agents arrested Bruce Reid, 49, on Monday. He was released Tuesday on $2,500 bail. Growing the white poppy plant, used to make opiates such as heroin, is illegal in the U.S. Police said a relative of Reid's tipped them off. Waldo County sheriff's deputies said they found a large field of poppies, three garbage bags full of poppy bulbs and 30 marijuana plants, as well as some processed marijuana. ''We've never encountered opium poppies before,'' Waldo County Chief Deputy Sheriff Scott Story said. By Associated Press, 07/28/99 10:22

Re:curious
You should never ask something like that so publicly. I know where you can but it took a lot of research on my part. You can also find out if you look.

opium poppies

I suppose it never crossed anyone's mind to check and see if CULTIVATION of poppies is illegal. It is not. Opium poppies grow wild especially in the Northwest. However if they can show he intended to harvest the latex from the bulbs, that's a different story.
