Cannabinoid May Halt Alzheimer's Progression, Study SaysAugust 17, 2006 - La Jolla, CA, USALa Jolla, CA: THC inhibits the formation of amyloid plaque, the primary marker for Alzheimer's disease (AD), far more effectively than approved medications, according to preclinical data to be published in the journal Molecular Pharmaceutics.
Investigators at The Scripps Research Institute in La Jolla, California reported that THC inhibits the enzyme responsible for the aggregation of amyloid plaque in a manner "considerably superior" to approved Alzheimer's drugs such as donepezil and tacrine."Our results provide a mechanism whereby the THC molecule can directly impact Alzheimer's disease pathology," researchers concluded. "THC and its analogues may provide an improved therapeutic [option] for Alzheimer's disease [by]... simultaneously treating both the symptoms and the progression of [the] disease."Previous studies have shown cannabinoids to possess anti oxidant and anti-inflammatory properties, both of which may play a role in moderating Alzheimer's. Last year, investigators at Madrid's Complutense University and the Cajal Institute in Spain reported that the intracerebroventricular administration of the synthetic cannabinoid WIN 55,212-2 prevented cognitive impairment and decreased neurotoxicity in rats. Other cannabinoids were also found to reduce the inflammation associated with Alzheimer's disease in human brain tissue in culture. "Our results indicate that... cannabinoids succeed in preventing the neurodegenerative process occurring in the disease," investigators concluded.Over 4.5 million Americans are estimated to be afflicted with Alzheimer's disease. That figure is expected to triple over the next 50 years. Previous human trials of synthetic THC (Marinol) and Alzheimer's found that administration of the drug reduced agitation and stimulated weight gain in patients suffering from the disease. For more information, please contact Paul Armentano, NORML Senior Policy Analyst, at (202) 483-5500. Full text of the study, "A molecular link between the active component of marijuana and Alzheimer's disease pathology," is available online at: http://pubs.acs.org/cgi-bin/sample.cgi/mpohbp/asap/abs/mp060066m.html Additional information on cannabinoids and neurodegenerative disorders is available online at: http://norml.org/index.cfm?Group_ID=6812DL: http://norml.org/index.cfm?Group_ID=6977 Colorado Cannabis Legalization Initiative Certified For November BallotAugust 17, 2006 - Denver, CO, USADenver, CO: The Colorado Secretary of State's office announced Wednesday that a statewide initiative that seeks to eliminate all criminal and civil penalties for the possession of cannabis by adults has been certified to appear on the November 2006 ballot.Sponsored by Safer Alternatives For Enjoyable Recreation (SAFER), the measure would amend state statutes to make the possession of up to one ounce of cannabis legal in Colorado for those age 21 or older. Last year, voters in Denver passed a similar municipal initiative by 54 percent.Sponsors turned in more than 130,000 signatures from Colorado voters to qualify the measure for the November ballot."The campaign will highlight the hypocrisy of laws that prohibit the use of marijuana while allowing and even encouraging the use of alcohol, an infinitely more harmful drug," said SAFER Campaign Director Mason Tvert. For more information, please visit: http://www.saferchoice.org To listen to an interview with SAFER's Mason Tvert, please download the August 14, 2006 edition of the NORML Audiostash at: http://normlaudiostash.com/id156.htmDL: http://norml.org/index.cfm?Group_ID=6978Seattle Hempfest Celebrates 15 Years This Weekend August 17, 2006 - Seattle, WA, USASeattle, WA: Event organizers are anticipating nearly 150,000 attendees at this weekend's 15th annual Seattle Hempfest, taking place this Saturday and Sunday at Myrtle Edwards Park in downtown Seattle. More than 80 speakers - including NORML Executive Director Allen St. Pierre and NORML Founder Keith Stroup - and over 50 bands will participate in the two-day event, which is the largest annual marijuana law reform rally held anywhere in the world.Other speakers scheduled to appear at this year's "protestival" include: NORML Board and Advisory Board Members Dale Gieringer, Dominic Holden, Norm Kent, Frank Lucido, George Rohrbacher, Norm Stamper, Jeffrey Steinborn, and Dan Viets, as well as Ethan Nadelmann, Executive Director of the Drug Policy Alliance, Mikki Norris, Executive Director of the Cannabis Consumers Campaign, Madeline Martinez, Executive Director of Oregon NORML, and Debby Goldsberry, Executive Director of the Cannabis Action Network. For a complete schedule of this year's Seattle Hempfest speakers and events, please visit: http://www.seattlehempfest.org/DL: http://norml.org/index.cfm?Group_ID=6980 DOE Cuts Funding For Random Student Drug Testing ProgramsAugust 17, 2006 - Washington, DC, USAWashington, DC: The US Department of Education (DOE) has dramatically reduced the level of funding available to subsidize random student drug testing programs in public high schools and middle schools, according to the agency's Office of Safe and Drug-Free Schools.According to the agency, only $1.7 million in federal funds will be available for schools that wish to enact student drug testing programs for the 2006-2007 school year. Last year, the DOE subsidized student drug testing programs in 350 schools nationwide at a total cost of more than $7 million. The White House had previously proposed increasing the budget to fund student drug testing programs to more than $25 million. According to the DOE, grantees will be required to participate in an ongoing national evaluation of the effectiveness of mandatory student drug testing programs. To date, the only federal study to assess the impact of student drug testing policies on a national basis found that "drug testing, as practiced in recent years in American secondary schools, does not prevent or inhibit student drug use."For more information, please contact Paul Armentano, NORML Senior Policy Analyst, or Allen St. Pierre. whig, continued
That is, of course, because triggering the CB1 receptor site by cannabinoids produces "apoptosis" or programmed cell death for tumor cells (typically by causing a DNA scan which triggers the shut down sequence for "HAL", in tumor cells, that is). In other words, why would a tumor cell increase the predominance of the CB1 receptor site if there was not also a beneficial purpose for it being there for the cell? It would not make sense for it to increase cell-destructive receptor sites unless there was also a beneficial purpose as well-for nutrient needs to be filled, etc.I guess what I am suggesting with great verbosity, of course, as always, is that the CB1 receptor site system is involved with a myriad of different control and other functions all over the body and that cannabinoids and metabolites of same are interwiven with Omega 3 products to the extent that when you get to a certain complexity of research and understanding of cannabinoids you MUST recognize that an equal amount of detailed research is also necessary regarding Omega 3 products and then when you begin to understand both sides of this equation, a person begins to understand that ALL MAJOR DISEASE MECHANISMS are involved in both areas of research and a totally unified theory develops. All complex theories and equations regarding each disease researched to date all begin to trigger a conclusion that Omega 3 deficiency is and can be one and the same as the "endocannabinoid deficiency syndrome" postulated by Ethan Russo a few years ago.The total absence of any consideration regarding the paucity of Omega 3 in the American diet for some 40-50 years is amazing-since all disease processes that are in "epidemic" increase in our society are tracible, therefore to this same deficiency. And since trans fatty acid intake (margarine, partially hydrogenated oils, Crisco) appears to interrupt absorption of Omega 3's, and to steal enzymes necessary for us to metabolize ALA (plant source Omega 3) into the animal types, if we wish to correct the imbalance, stop the TFA's & increase the Omega 3 intake.Or else, you must do the next best thing which is to become a "symptom reduction" user of cannabis. In other words, the fact that we all have become advocates of change regarding this controversial substance, and the fact that some 25 million people each year are "tested" for such a "postive response" to this still illegal substance, supports the "fact" also that TFA usage over the decades and lack of Omega 3 in the diet has left us sitting ducks to also be told, by John Blue Shirt, to "get your hands behind your backs" and "lay down on the floor" or I'll "blow your brains out, boy", or whatever your own, local goon squad will tell you merely because they are so gooned out by lack of Omega 3 or high TFA's that they cannot think outside of the box anymore, if you get my drift. (and I am done now). PAUL PETERSON

Thanks for the post-you are correct, in the interaction between EPA & arachidonic acid-the "wet blanket" effect you describe is a good one. Arachidonic acid is an Omega 6 product (think American addiction to that "corn is king" stuff). Arachidonic acid is secreted by every cell in the body in PMS, when the hormone levels drop. That is why people that have perhaps a 1-40 imbalance (historically, the ideal is 1-2 or so-Omega 3 outbalanced by Omega 6 by a 2 to one ratio) tend to have much higher incidence of PMS and ADHD, the "male form" of the condition, if I may be so bold to postulate such a coincidence of some of the mental symtoms I have, even though I do not get PMS, if you get my drift.True, people that "eat" cannabis over an extended period of time, get many of the benefits from EPA & DHA, specifically because Omega 3 MUST be one of the building blocks for and of THC!You see, in a mammal, one of the things Omega 3 is used to produce is "endocannabinoids", which is why smoking or eating this stuff tends to help rebalance a person's own internal chemical factory. From my research, EPA & DHA (the two predominant forms of Omega 3) are used interchangeably, to a great degree. From guinea pig heart studies, for instance, it was established that guinea pig heart "cardiomegalites" changed in proportional ways, after a 6 week controlled diet with various EPA/DHA balances (I think they used seal oil, shark oil & fish oil supplements, each with its own characteristic different balance). There is another Omega 3, I believe it is DPA, an "intermediate" form, which is only seen in non-scaled & oily skinned sharks (and maybe seals, just a guess).I wrote a pamphlet once suggesting that this special form might help people gain a brain I called "swimmer's brain" due to the potential for increased production of receptor-sites in new brain cells. Now, of course, it appears well-established that 1) the CB1 receptor site must allow for the attachment of other chemicals other than just cannabinoids, such as other Omega 3 metabolites (my own theory, that is), 2) since pancreatic tumor cells produce a MUCH HIGHER INCIDENCE OF CB1 receptor sites (I think it is CB1) there must be a need for this site to draw in necessary nutrients, 3) I need to get off this computer at a library source, sorry for the interruption in this transmission. Just as a sidenote, NORML has an excellent page if you want to find a lawyer in your area. Your best bet would be to find a criminal defense lawyer (most of them are registered with NORML). Click on your state, and they have law firms listed by city and their phone #'s and websites. I already have my lawyer picked out, should I ever need one...

"Now scientists have established that when corticosteroids (stress hormones) build up and don't get flushed out (by good, sound sleep and yoga or cannabis or whatever turns you off), there is a cumulative effect, which, after 6 months or so, starts to trigger degenerative diseases-either by triggering an autoimmune disease, or other chronic changes for other diseases."This can help us understand how cannabis gives such an immediate relief to some people who have built up a large surplus of stress hormones. When people have chronic pain, those hormones build up on a daily basis and need to be flushed out regularly.EPA supplements can help as well I think but only over a long period of use. Probably that helps on the opposite side of the chain by inhibiting the creation of stress hormones in first place -- as I understand it EPA acts like a sort of "wet blanket" on the formation of arachidonic acid and the stress hormones form from that.By the way we know that cannabis itself contains large amounts of EPA and the major alternative source is Fish Oil, which can contain mercury and other contaminants apart from any benefit it may provide. I think people who eat cannabis over a long period probably gain the most benefit.

Thanks for noticing! The more things change, the more they stay the same, eh?But the more insidious thing is, this has been known since the time of Shakespeare-a contemporary of that bard discovered the thing called "diabetes" and also discovered the likely cause-he called it a "long sorrow".Now scientists have established that when corticosteroids (stress hormones) build up and don't get flushed out (by good, sound sleep and yoga or cannabis or whatever turns you off), there is a cumulative effect, which, after 6 months or so, starts to trigger degenerative diseases-either by triggering an autoimmune disease, or other chronic changes for other diseases. The "long sorrow" chain, in my opinion, could be triggered by having to repetitively seek lies or to maintain lies (which would cause the brain to start to malfunction, eh?).That means many "LEO's" that must repetitively foist deception and injustice on their countrymen are going to be uniquely predisposed to Alzheimer's later on.That also means about 130,000 returning soldiers from a field of misvalor will have some heavy shit to pay for as well. And of course, the Israeli armed forces have already started to give their "shell-shocked" soldiers the THC pill, since it helps to overcome PTSD so well.Marijuana-"the not just for breakfast drink" anymore. "Don't leave home without it." (But of course, don't tell em Pauly sentya or anything, OK?) PAUL PETERSON

for any of you who run afoul of the law, an important thing to consider when hiring an attorney: Don't look in the phone book for a lawyer. In short, study. Find a lawyer with a solid criminal defense record, and talk. Try and make sure that the guy isn't a prick, that he at least understands what you went through and that he's willing to do justice for you.A criminal defense lawyer must be comfortable, not condescending, towards people who are criminal defendants. They have to have the guts to confront the prosecutor and demand in some form your rights and your well-being. Very important.--rchandar

You are absolutely right-people that start to lie (because of the necessity of lying to avoid retribution for crimes, for instance) then must remember long chains of falsities sot they don't inadvertently tell the wrong lie at the wrong time to the wrong person, meaning that their entire "hard drive" gets mucked up in recalling what lie fits what crime and which witness and how to keep them all straight. This causes, in some people, such a logjam that they cannot ever respond without ruminating on a lie for a few days or weeks. Like some judges I have known. On the other hand, the best judges, the honest ones, especially the ones that want to do justice, (yes, there are some of those somewhere) will follow this protocol 1) as soon as someone says something to them, they respond immediately with their gut level, immediate thoughts, 2) ask followup questions (if appropriate), 3) then make a ruling if applicable , 4) tell one attorney or the other one to draft whatever order or memorandum is appropriate, 5) therefore keeping from having to ruminate on the matter even a second more than necessary, 6) go on to finish, in similar fashion, all their business in a busy schedule and then, as a result 7) they sleep really well at night because there are NO UNFINISHED THOUGHTS THAT THEY HAVE TO RUMINATE ABOUT, 8) they don't get Alzheimer's disease, either, because they are much more able to reset their "stress hormones" to a sleepfilled state and also 9) neurogenesis works better for them and they get new brain cells and tend to get smarter and smarter over time (along with the experience of learning their craft better and better). These guys get a photographic memory also. They learn to pick out bad lawyers and because they hit the bad ones on the noggin with crafty responses that the lawyers must learn to deal with quickly, they tend to bring more justice into their courtrooms because no lawyer can merely hide behind deception (they wither away or grow to the occasion because they all know they have to PRETEND AT LEAST to be honest or be found in their deceptions by the scientic judges!True, these courtrooms are few and far between. Most judges I have learned to deal with obfuscate as a practice, and you can always tell the worst ones. You have to wait months and months for decisions, which then get horribly botched, because they are loyalty trips only, and the rulings are only designed to pick out who the judge has a "favor" to pick, not what justice would indicate should be the decision.Judges that wait and wait for justice, are really trying, you see, to wait until people forget details-so then they can "justify" mistakes if they are caught, or something like it.Right on-and I am convinced that some forms of Alzheimer's is a necessary consequence of an unconscious or otherwise "wish" to forget despicable thoughts or deeds long unanswered with justice. The perpetual worrying about past crimes and the consequences, must be tremendously debilititing. Stress hormones abound, all processes start to go the wrong way and then, forgetfulness sets in full time. What happened to Reagan? Hope it happens to Happy George soon, eh? Nuff Said. PAUL PETERSON

What I believe is the more we can expand and still connect the better it is for all of us. Let's say we would get shutdown. If we have all our eggs in one basket then what would happen and how would cannabis be brought into the light of day? Cannabis reform is way to important for anyone to depend on one web site. I made a message forum just in case that would ever happen. I believe we always need to look at all the possibilities.

One thing I really like about having this blog is when I want to go off on a really tangential off-topic post about something that we're discussing here, I can say what I want over there and then post a link back here. That way it doesn't clutter the comments on CNews for people that aren't interested and those who want to read it can click on the web address. This is what I like about trackbacks on other blogs and I'm trying to do it manually here. Is it okay with you?

Blowing up architecture...
Demolishing architecture is the main reason for the military tactics of the U.S. and Israel. But the collateral damage outweighs the military damage. In the end, killing civilians for soveriegn reasons is revolutionizing to Muslims. The Islam world and the Christians are clashing and it's because for 50 years, we let out government secretly plot out a timeline of how to essentially genocide the muslims. As if it were a soap opera that literally had to be written to meet the objective. Our government doesn't care for the people. It doesn't care if we DIE. Yet we are letting our politicians sell this country out. We have the ability to build our borders out of lego and it would be the best Wall Pink Floyd could have made. But our borders are a joke, our laws are a joke, and our free will is a joke. You did it, I did it and now we must ALL go to hell.Good luck in the impending blackout. Yes, that is my understanding, too. THC binds to a secondary binding site on the post-synaptic membrane-bound protein Acetylcholinesterase (AChE).Although binding of CBD and other cannabinoids to the CB1 and CB2 receptors is rather weak in comparison to THC, the existence of other non-CB1, non-CB2 "receptors" such as on AChE raise the possibility of good efficacy with a wide variety or broad-spectrum of cannabinoids.Another way to think about it: we've used the same "key" namely THC in the two "locks" CB1 and CB2. If there are other locks, or receptor sites, we might have good use for some of the other sixty or so keys on the cannabinoid keyring. This may be good reason to medicate with whole cannabis rather than synthesized THC, if possible.Wikipedia has an informative page on AChE:http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/AcetylcholinesteraseGlaucoma and myasthenia gravis are mentioned there along with Alzheimer's disease. Also, by acting as a weak AChE inhibitor, THC may provide neuroprotection against potent neurotoxins (presumably by distorting the main AChE binding site and preventing the neurotoxins from binding there irreversibly). I believe there was some research done along those lines, but I have no reference.

This is in response to one of your comments on an earlier thread. What war in Iraq? We're in the homestretch to the mid-terms and if the neo-cons and the complicit media can't get Bush's approval ratings back up to at least 50% they will likely stage another terrorist attack in September or October. Marinol for Alzheimers
There have been several studies showing that Marinol was effective for reducing agitation in Alzheimer patients. In spite of that, AFAIK, there has not been much interest in using this for those patients.I would imagine that whole cannabis, with CBD in addition to THC, would be even better. I know in me, pure THC CAUSES agitation. Whole cannabis has the therapeutic effects I need without this side effect. Unfortunately, I use only pure THC for legal reasons. And this article mentions that other cannabinoids in addition to THC work for preventing the progression of Alzheimers. To me, this would indicate that whole cannabis is currently the best medication for Alzheimers, with Marinol being a poor second.Greenmed - it is interesting. As I understand the articles, THC binds with the chemical that helps forms the plaques, making it inactive. Is that correct?

Greenmed, perhaps I'm getting too excited about this study. They will likely ignore it... as usual...or start telling people that it can be produced by chemical and pharmeceutical companies and help "the economy" and be better than the real thing. If I see any signs of Alzheimers in myself, or someone I know...I may have to look into sueing the you know what out of somebody for denying people this relief...it's it's cheapest, purest, best form...the real thing.

In the meantime
The war on cannabis users rages on and those fat people in DC never seem to be able to overcome their addiction to greed and ignorance, yet there is hope, for even the fattest senator and congressman can have a decent funeral, that is if they can remember where to bury the body.Until we can find better medicine I hope cannabis can be uncoupled from the malignant tumour of law enforcement and the rotting judges and lawyers, who pray on the souls of this civilized world.May you all have good health, and may the Light of Understanding Fill Your Soul.

More from the THC and Alzheimer's study
"It is noteworthy that THC is a considerably more effective inhibitor of AChE-induced [amyloid plaque] deposition than the approved drugs for Alzheimer's disease treatment, donepezil and tacrine, which reduced [amyloid plaque] aggregration by only 22% and 7% respectively, at twice the concentration used in our studies."

My Thoughts
My mother had Alzheimers and one thing I noticed as she took steps down that she would become very agitated at not being able to remember. Soon she would then have a TIA and slip further. Cannabis helps keep agitation at bay and maybe that helps slow the progression of the disease. It is only what I think not fact or anything. Also Alzheimers patients lose their appetite and forget to eat which runs the person down and makes them more vunerable. Cannabis increases the appetite and food tastes better so the body will get the fuel it needs to keep going which helps too.

Forget lies, they only confuse. There is a reason honest people are smarter than liars. They don't have to expend mental energy keeping their story straight.Confronted with the truth the liar has to reject it out of hand without considering it or risk untangling his careful knots. The problem comes with good honest people that have been raised in a culture of lies. We still have to spend a lot of mental energy untangling the knots. A lot of us are confused, and it takes a very long time to figure out the real world coming from a place of authoritarian deceit.
