  House OKs Medical Pot Prosecutions

Washington, DC -- The House on Wednesday voted to continue to allow federal prosecution of those who smoke marijuana for medical purposes in states with laws that permit it.A year ago, the Supreme Court ruled that the federal government can prosecute medical marijuana users, even when state laws allow doctor-prescribed use of the drug.
By a 259-163 vote, the House again turned down an amendment that would have blocked the Justice Department from prosecuting people in the 11 states with such medical marijuana laws.Advocates say medical marijuana use is the only way that many chronically ill people, such as AIDS and cancer patients, can relieve their symptoms. The vote came as the House debated a $59.8 billion bill covering the departments of Commerce, Justice and State."If the voters have seen to it and a doctor agrees, it's a travesty for the government to intercede ... to get in the way of someone using something to alleviate their suffering," said Rep. Dana Rohrabacher, R-Calif. "This is something that should be left to the states as American tradition dictates.""Marijuana is not harmless as some claim," said Rep. Tom Latham, R-Iowa. "Marijuana continues to be the most widely abused drug in the United States."Opponents of the amendment said Marinol, a government-approved prescription drug that contains the active ingredient in marijuana, offers comparable relief for pain and nausea.Eight states — Alaska, California, Colorado, Maine, Montana, Nevada, Oregon and Washington — have legalized medical marijuana by voter referendums. The legislatures of three others — Hawaii, Rhode Island and Vermont — have legalized the practice.Source: Associated Press (Wire)Author: Andrew Taylor, Associated Press WriterPublished: Wednesday, June 28, 2006Copyright: 2006 Associated Press Related Articles:Support States' Rights -- OK Medical Pothttp://cannabisnews.com/news/thread21940.shtmlLobbying Group Presses for Medical Marijuana http://cannabisnews.com/news/thread21928.shtml

I appreciate your comment. I am at a point where I am content in knowing that we have the strength to hang on during these very difficult times. We have come a long way in a relatively short time when compared to how long they have been fighting us. Maybe in time if we get new leaders in power we might get this job done once and for all. That's my current hope.

You're welcome. Please excuse the long delay in acknowledging your posts. Sometimes I get swept along a little fast, even for the niceties of life, but I try to remember to give respect and courtesy back when I can. I enjoy your postings, and those of the other regulars, many of which make me think outside my "medical use mainly" box. Thank you.FoM, what can I say, that has not been said by others? You've made a community here that is unique among cannabis activists/enthusiasts. It is indeed a place where compassion and reason reign. Thank you for all you're doing.Regards to all, greenmed

Coment #61: "Souder"
OSam, I hear ya. I used to live in Indiana. Souder is an idiot. He even looks like an idiot. Go to his website, you'll see. He looks like the kind of person who had one too many wedgies in 4th grade. And ever since he's taken office, drugs has just about been his only issue. All he does is spout propaganda - propaganda that's already been said by someone else, at that. He's about as useless as a piss-flavored lollipop.N.E. Indiana (Fort Wayne) is his district, if you know anybody there. I've got family there, I can do my part and convince them not to vote for him. It's a very small step, if he would be outed, it will be one less prohib-idiot that we will have to hear from. To the curb with him and and all the other prohib-idiots!

We Need To Bust 20 Prohibition Reps
If I lived in Souder's district in Indiana, I would personally pass out flyers urging voters to de-elect Souder in 2006. These guys come up for election every two years, surely we can get grass root movements to simplu kick these hard core prohibitionists out of Congress. Time to take control of our runaway government.

Fed Up with this Strawman Argument
"Marijuana is not harmless as some claim," said Rep. Tom Latham, R-Iowa. I have not *ever* heard or read a cannabis law reformer refer to cannabis as "harmless." Safer, yes, but not "harmless." This "harmless" argument seem to spout only from the mouths of prohibitionists!

Comment 49 "Dinosaurs"
My so called "Representative" really is an entrenched dinosaur. He's 83 years old and very, very wealthy and an ex-judge. He's all about money and the rich getting richer and keeping down the rabble...that's all...as far as I can see. I've latched on to him in the past like an angry chihuahua...but he just totally ignores me.I've been fascinated by elections and government ever since we got a TV when I was about seven. I watched the Conventions and the elections. I remember seeing Mamie and Ike as they left the Whitehouse for retirement. A teacher really got me interested in the Nixon-Kennedy elections. A neighbor had me stumping on the street for her son. We were his version of Goldwater Girls. But early on in studying all this and classes in government and history...I decided that I was always going to vote for the individual and ignore party affiliations.I've not deviated from that plan until yesterday. Here we are...virtually drowning in unjust laws...and it looks to me like Republicans just knock us back in when we struggle to get out. Seems like more Democrats are throwing out lifelines.Call me a reluctant Democrat...whatever...but yesterday was the very last straw for the Republicans as far as I'm concerned. I didn't vote for Bush or Gore. I can't even recall the Libertarian candidates name...but I voted for him.Mean people suck! Republicans look "mean" and stupid, immoral, and tyranical to me. I'd just as soon stick my arm in a deep bucket of chicken poop as vote for one now.

Representatives vote record on HR 2087
I've been trying to find the indivdual Representative's vote status on the medical marijuana bill but haven't found it yet.I already know how my dink Representative voted....I don't even need to see the record for that. I don't even write my Rep. on the subject anymore, I just vote against her.
She should just retire. Our district is so ridiculously out of touch, superficial Republican that it is tough to get her out.....but this is the year.

rollcall
thanks for the links to the vote tally - i am shocked in a good way - my rep changed his vote - a republican, and he voted aye. i'm stunned and pleased at least that much. i had no reply from my letter to him, and so was wondering but could not get the tally up last night.
i'm thankful at least one mind and vote was swayed towards the positive and right thing.
small progress, but progress.
there is hope.
i just wanna' make it across the desert and get to that beautiful promised oasis-land.
i hope everyone has a safe and celebratory independence day, despite the fact we're all pretty much federal felons again.
let the uprising begin.

Al Gore on The daily Show OT
Yes, he was really good. He was genuine, at ease, soft spoken yet and knowledgeable. He was funny at times, his wit is quick and he's very smart.I voted for him in 2000 and he was elected, but unfortunately that was overturned. I sure wish he was our President. When I've seen him interviewed recently, I feel more than ever that he would have been a fine President. To those that voted for Bush because he seemed like a guy you'd have a beer with....what were you thinking?!
Now , the drunk at the end of the bar is our President!

Suggested Letter to Reps Voting Nay
Dear Chet Edwards,I am truly disappointed and ashamed of your vote to continue the federal government's harassment and arrest of medical marijuana consumers. In the legal world, based on polls your vote would be considered misrepresentation. Too bad we can't sue you. I will tell my friends and family to vote against you and encourage their friends and acquaintenances to vote against you in the 2006 election. You perpetuate hateful policies and the only cure is to send you home and elect a Representative who will care about their constituients, as well as the citizens of other states. The "People" are smarter about politicians these days, and you sir are a Dinosaur who needs to become extinct. You would do the people of the United States a favor if you would simply retire from politics.

Whig comment 37
I've never considered myself a Republican, a Democrat, or Libertarian. In recent years I voted Libertarian whenever possible because of my disatisfaction with the main two.18 Republicans voted Yea. The Democrats didn't do perfectly...but they did a lot better than the Republicans. Today was enough to make me vote a straight Democratic ticket...but I'm not planning on joining the party or being registered as a Democrat. I get rigors just thinking about it! If they represent us, I'll contribute...but I'm not becoming a "member" of the party. Just got a new view on how I'll be voting, after watching that travesty in our Congress today. Thanks for the music (comment 42) and I'm tickled about your new city's actions, too. Gotta love freedom loving people.

Hope #11
Congratulations Hope.I still stay out of direct political engagement, because I believe I have more that I can do from outside the system and less I have to compromise. Maybe that is selfish, but some of us have to take up positions that aren't watered for public consumption. I know that others of us must engage, and cannot afford to withdraw from the field, or have enough supporters that count on them to act as a hero on their behalf.Someone running for public office, no matter how good and honest, cannot speak about certain things without severely jeopardizing political viability. Among the Democrats which you are now a part of, and which I now consider myself allied with, many want to be able to speak about our issues, but cannot do so yet except indirectly and with lots of cover. Even activists who are closely involved or even related to a political campaign lose their ability to speak freely. Breaking down this barrier is something they cannot do from within.Like you, I converted. I was a Republican once. I did not support Al Gore in 2000. I watched him on the Daily Show tonight. I now truly think he's a good and decent man. Times change, and character shows. There are good people in the Democratic Party. Maybe they've been ineffective for awhile, but with some leaders they seem to be doing better or hopefully will emerge soon. And I'm very sorry I ever believed in Republicans.

I always thought John Stossel was good but tonight I saw him on Joe Scarborough and he was whining calling people like Al Gore Socialists. That sounds bad but maybe it isn't bad but he made it sound bad. Global Warming was the topic. He sure doesn't seem to care about much but his own opinion. I wonder if he lives near the ocean or rivers? Maybe he would be more concerned if he did. He said his wife and children believe in Global Warming.

I have always believed that we must get back to the garden. I think of all the Rainbows coming together from many states to share a time of prayer and happiness. There will be people that will cause trouble but it has never stopped them and the gathering has been going on since 1972. That really is remarkable when you think about it. 20,000 people gathering in peace. What a concept.

I have come to a few conclusions about Democrats. They are pushed around a lot. If a child has mean parents and they are always getting thumped the child doesn't make many waves. I have never seen a Democrat not be yelled at by a Republican when they have them together on the news. The Republicans scream and talk down to Democrats. I think Democrats try not to act the same way as Republicans because it is distasteful to most of them. In turn they have their words and intentions twisted. No one seems to stop them from being so mean either.

The Nay voters may be "Representing"
someone or something...but it sure isn't the 70% of the people that want this persecution to end. That's for sure! What kind of drug are they on that they can't hear us?Oh yeah...I forgot, again. Money.

Me either, FoM!
Just call me the reluctant new democrat. Got to be though, looks like.I can't shake the feeling that the nay voters are being paid off somehow. Campaign donations? Pay backs? I don't know, but they are getting something to vote against reason, sanity, and compassion. Those guys that spoke up for the ammendment though...weren't they something? Old Tom, Benjamin, and George would have recognized those guys. I recognize them. They are honest, compassionate, and reasonable. They want government to butt out. They're true American Patriots.
