Show Some Compassion -- Consider Medical Marijuana

Boston -- As a Massachusetts resident and medical professional, I am appalled at that fact that some of our state legislators still refuse to consider the bill that would protect seriously ill people who use medical marijuana with a doctor’s recommendation from the threat of prosecution. As our current law stands, any and all marijuana users are subject to criminal penalties, even those seriously ill individuals who have been advised by their doctors to use marijuana.
Medical professionals worldwide continue to recommend marijuana to patients who suffer from a variety of conditions, including muscle spasticity and neuropathic pain associated with multiple sclerosis (MS), and severe nausea and wasting due to chemotherapy treatment. If these seriously ill individuals can be prescribed morphine, OxyContin and other powerful, highly addictive narcotics by their doctors, why not allow them to use relatively safe, all-natural marijuana? According to the Drug Policy Forum, over 1,300 doctors in Massachusetts have signed a pledge supporting medical marijuana. In all seven Massachusetts districts where medical marijuana has appeared on the ballot, voters have consistently been in favor of the measure by an average of 69 percent. Despite overwhelming support from the community, many legislators still oppose the bill. They continue to hide behind the same old objections, even though these complaints have been discredited time and again. They claim, for example, that medical marijuana legislation sends the wrong message to teens and encourages teen drug use. In fact, every other state that has had a medical marijuana law in effect long enough to produce data has seen a decrease in teen marijuana use since implementing the law. Some claim that the THC pill, Marinol, is a sufficient substitute for marijuana, but I know first-hand that cancer patients undergoing chemotherapy can often be too nauseated to even swallow a pill. In fact, research has shown that oral administration is the least effective way to administer THC or the other therapeutic components of marijuana. The Joint Committee on Public Health considered the bill this week, and sent it for study. I call on the committee to recognize the plight of these seriously ill people and reconsider. I also urge all concerned constituents to contact their senators and representatives and let them know how important medical marijuana is to Massachusetts’s residents. Prosecuting medical marijuana patients, besides being cruel and inhumane, wastes taxpayer dollars and preoccupies law enforcement officials when they could be arresting violent criminals. Individuals who are seeking relief from the debilitating symptoms associated with their diseases should not be branded as criminals. They deserve our compassion and understanding, and it’s time to allow them a wider range of options for relief. Like I've always pondered, what country lies between Afghanistan and Iraq? Iran. We have permanent bases built in both of those bordering nations and there is a reason. There's no turning back now. We have "crossed the Rubicon".

Is you computer working ok now? We are trying to figure out how to take the screws out of the hard drive on my main computer that's broken. Toker00 I remember my mother telling me that plants were used to make medicine. She said plant based medicine was better but man made drugs were cheaper to make.Hope, Thanks for the advice about soap. I get foot cramps but I figured all those years of riding horses put a lot of stress on the ball of my feet and that's where I get cramps. When I got the cramp the other night my toes all bent and looked weird besides hurting. Getting older can be a drag but it sure beats the alternative.

Stamps, Dianne, and Soap.
"Can we mail Jerry a book of stamps with our letters, Linda?"I've wondered about that, too. What about stationary and envelopes? I intend to get a money order Monday. I've never bought a money order in my life...but I bet I can figure out how.Toker00, I posted to Dianne over at Urbangrounds, but it didn't go in. Maybe they are looking it over, or maybe it was too long. If it isn't up tomorrow, I'll break up the comment into smaller posts to see if it will go in that way. FoM, I've been afflicted with leg and foot cramps for years. Mine usually strike after I go to bed or when I'm lying down. I read about a remedy of sleeping with a bar of soap. It works! It definitely helps somehow. I prefer a bar of Oil of Olay soap. It's amazing. I don't know how it works but it can work. For a few weeks or so after I discovered this...I carried a bar of soap around in my pocket as well...just for extra good measure.Oh my gosh. When I try to post this I get a page that says "Error" "Bad timing!" on a white page...similar to the one I got over at Urbangrounds. First, over there, after I posted it went to Adobe and showed fourteen blank pages and said something about Missouri Podcast. I went back and tried to resubmit it and I got a white page that said, "Sorry. You already said that!"I've never seen either of these two...actually three pages before.I'll save this and try to repost it tomorrow.

Thank you. I really appreciate natural medicine. A friend from years ago called me today and she is into selling natural medicine products. I told her about what I believe about natural medicine and she agrees. I have a terrible habit of sitting on my foot and last night I got a cramp in my leg that made me want a pain drug for about a half an hour but I got by with one aspirin, rubbing essential oil of lavendar on my leg and waiting until it passed. Years ago I would have taken a couple pain pills.

Can we mail Jerry a book of stamps with our letters, Linda?Mayan, what if Isreal strikes Iran this month, like it has planned? What if Iran agrees to the EU and Russian offer, but only after the US's 30 day ultimatum? It doesn't say what the US is prepared to do if Iran doesn't adhere to the ultimatum. If they're not going to ask for anymore economic sanctions, then what do you think the option will be, and does it start with the letter M?Hope, check urbangrounds again. You know what I don't get? I don't get our nerve pushing like we do. One thing we always say we do is embargos and that will teach them. Since the Port issue surfaced and we don't own many cargo ships what if a country we get lots of goods from decides not to ship product to us? Can we handle embargos?

Have you tried to restart your computer?
If you can start your computer in spite of the grinding sound, it's not your hard drive, it's the fan.But I think you said you can't start the computer, you just get a B/W bios message - meaning it is the hard drive.I agree on "Ghost" for down the road. A nice utility to keep your stuff safe.

Suggest you buy or borrow Ghost, and use the new ide drive to make a clone from your old drive. Yes, the sound is likely the fan, blow it out or replace it.Once you have cloned the drive, you can and probably should wipe the old drive to make an image onto it from the new drive at and still have space available for data. (Ghost compresses the image and checks it for accuracy.)IMHO, Ghost is hands down the easiest way to backup for pcs.Of course in OS X Unix there is a single line of text that runs from Terminal. but I understand that many are unwilling to even run a Mac side by side with their PC, for whatever reason.see also: http://cannabisnews.com/news/21/thread21003.shtml#23and add CCLeaner, CWShredder HijackThis and AboutBusterto the list of tools.Ask if you need help, and also try googling the word troubleshooting and any of the software names to get frequently asked questions resolved. Finally, I am sure there is a 'free' linux way to do the cloning, if obtaining Ghost is an issue.

Thank you so much. The really good thing about this is you are here and I am here and I can work on the computer and if it gives me trouble I can ask using this computer. If I only had the one computer I'd be getting a new one because I wouldn't have any idea how to even attempt to fix it. I sure would like to get by without a lot of extra expense and this way it won't cost much compared to a new computer if it works. That's a God Send to me.

No - use the old one is no harder
Just go ahead and try the old one. Once it is up, you can see if it is big enough for you. You can always add a second drive later. But I do suggest first trying to boot off your "bootable" disks that are part of the operating system set. As a check. If no disk is marked for booting, just put in disk 1 and turn on the computer. It should prompt you.Too bad I'm not there to help you. It would be a lot easier.
We all have a vested interest in keeping you up and running.

medical M footdragging
Of course they don't want medical marijuanna to get nay further than it has already. If enough states document, legislate, and 'legally recognize' the medicinal properties of cannabis, then the 'class 1' schedule is resoundly demonstrated to be false. In this case the government would have to do what it very rarely has done; admit it's error and mistake. As it is the laws concerning prohibition are very shaky, and are in place by the sheer force and TERROR of the powers in place. Any one with any common sense (or human care and concern) can see the ludicrous 'holey' (as in 'full of holes') 'logic' for what it is.So if enough states do it, the feds will have to overide constitutional restraints on limiting federal powers over the states, which is why their little cadre of wolves and snakes is covering every avenue that might jeopardize their little world domination scheme. The groundwork for that agenda was laid a long time ago, at least as far back as 1787.It's a race for time. How much can be saved from the rampage of the Bush regime on the left hand while the right hand is busy setting up new schemes of rape, pillage, and destruction. It's like running around behind a reckless kid in a crystal art show, trying to catch all the precious items that he is throwing in the air before they crash and break. One thing George Bush and his cronies know well, is that it is mush easier to destroy, and break, than it is to create and sustain.

Unicore Prison Industries and KEEFE
RunRuff, letter postmarked Feb. 27:"Funny little coincidence - Unicore Prison Industries started under George I along with mandatory minimums. No one knows who owns Unicore. And I've heard you can't find out. Unicore pays inmates $1.40 to $2.00 per hour to do work (skilled labor) that pays $18.00 to $25.00 on the Outside. They in turn compete with other industries that pay regular wages, undersell them and still make more profits. Many on the internet have said that George I was/is heavily invested in Unicore in fact he and some of his buddies started it before he created the 1000% increase in the Federal prison population. It is making so much money is why no one, not even the Supreme Court, mess with it. Now, for Mama Bush, Barbara. She and 2 or 3 of her friends own KEEFE Brand food products. Besides a few name brands like Hershey and Pepsi, this is the only food, snack brand available at the commissary in all Federal Institutions. The Bush Bane is like cancer throughout our culture. Yes, everything is gone.
Right now, the B/W stuff you noted, is stuff coming from your bios, a built in EROM that starts the boot. But everything else is on the disk. The drive you are sticking in may have an operating system on it, in which case the computer will boot and you'll see the old files on that disk. Otherwise, you'll have to install the OS on the new drive. The files ont he drive will still be there after the installation ( unless you reformat it).BTW - you should be able to boot off of your operating system CDs and do a diagnostic to see what is wrong. Once you boot off of the CDs ( or maybe floppies!) you can check out the broken hard drive. It'll probably give an error trying to access the hard drive.

runruff - word from the Inside
Now I know why I wasn't able to talk with runruff, why it was taking long to get acclimated, because the Feds had him in the Hole testing his will.Comments from a letter from Jerry postmarked Feb. 27
"I have been having a hard time getting checked in. Everything takes so long. Lots of waiting and then, like all government organizations the left hand never knows what the right hand is doing, and then there is the mentality and I.Q. level of the people who are attracted to these jobs. Uncle Sam rewards incompetance. It is built into the Fed system. Do they show me respect? I admit that I have encountered a few in the higher echelons of this institution who recognize a fair soul. These few show me much respect. The pawns however have no capacity for recognizing anything above their own cretin mentality." "Tell FOM, TokerOO, Sukoi I will write them back when I get some more stamps. Tell FOM I can't receive any videos or dvds. Thank her for thinking of me and her husband Stick also. All have been so sweet. It sure helps bout my spirits to hear from people when they write words of encouragement." Just a quick thought on your computer. Check the fan for dust. Years ago I worked as a desktop support person and I often ran across fans that were so loaded with dust that they would cause a loud grinding noise inside the case. If you have a can of compressed air or even a vaccuum with a hose you can clean it out. I hope that's all it is...very cheap, easy sloution.Good luck.

Dankhank
Thanks to you too. If I only need a hard drive and it isn't hard to replace I might give it a try. I assume I wouldn't need the computer online while I worked on it. I am really not smart when it comes to computers. Someday I hope a computer becomes as trouble free as a tv is now but then no one would buy a new one.

Thanks for the ok on the e machine. I really am tired today because I'm thinking of what to do and how to do it. I miss my regular computer already but this one is working fine luckily. It's running quiet and loading fairly quickly. I hope I can find a news article to post today. News is going to be slow for a while I think. It's hard to predict though.

Big enough oh me oh my I don't know. I have a feeling we are going to have computers and parts all over my kitchen table before this weekend is over. We only got a few hours sleep last night and when we are this tired it's best to be happy we got this one up and operational today. I really was afraid that I wasn't going to be online for days. It's a miracle that I am here today. I would always call Ron Bennett if I was having trouble and he would post and tell you why I was away. People have been so worried about where is this person or that person and no one answered their questions. I don't want anyone to worry that comes here.

In all likelyhood you can reuse that drive. Is it big enough? You can get a REALLY big drive these days for $40-80.

The bold lie
Not only is it a huge lie that there is anything in the Constitution that prohibits medical cannabis (what a joke!), but it is also a huge lie that it is even prohibited by federal law! I am so sick of hearing that.Ed Forchion showed conclusively and WITH SOLID LEGAL CITATIONS that medical cannabis is actually "grandfathered" in as an established, pre-1930s, widely-used medicine in the American pharmacopeia. So the entire prohibition on medical cannabis is itself illegal and based on ignorance and probably in some cases purposeful IGNORING and obfuscation of its true exemption from federal Schedule One status:The Federal Food, Drug, and Cosmetic Act of 1938 ("the FDCA"), 21 U.S.C. §301 et seq., is designed to protect public health by regulating "new drugs" that are intended for use in interstate commerce. Barnes v. United States, 142 F.2d 648 (9th Cir.1944); United States v. Kordel, 164 F.2d 913 (7th Cir.1947); United States v. Two Bags, Poppy Seeds, 147 F.2d 123 (6th Cir. 1945). There exists, however, a "grandfather" clause which exempts certain old drugs from this "new drug" status. 21 U.S.C. §321(p)(1); United States v. Rutherford, 442 U.S.544, 546-48 (1979); Rutherford v. United States, 541 F.2d. 1137, 1140-42 (10th Cir.1976) (reversed on other grounds, 442 U.S. 544).As explained by federal regulators, when Congress revamped the FDCA in 1939, it "accepted those drugs marketed prior to 1938 which had been subject to the 1906 provisions of the FDCA [requiring drugs to be identified in recognized medical authorities such as the National Formulary, United States Dispensatory, Pharmacopeia of the United States, or other similar sources] provided these very old drugs retain their exact formulations and are never promoted for new uses." 57 Fed.Reg. 10499, 10503 (1992) (citing 21 U.S.C. §321(p) and (w)). As further explained, these pre-1938 drugs "are politically 'grandfathered' drugs" and "need not meet modern standards for safety and effectiveness." Ibid; United States v. Rutherford, 442 U.S. at 546-48; Rutherford v. United States, 541 F.2d. at 1140-42.As will now be shown, marijuana is one of those "very old drugs" that was grandfathered in as a medicine back in 1938. Marijuana (more commonly known as cannabis) was widely recognized for its medicinal use in the medical journals of that time, and brand-name companies, such as Parke-Davis and Eli Lilly, were cultivating "home-grown cannabis" and selling the "flowering tops" of the plant for use in the treatment of illnesses such as anorexia, chronic pain, spasticity, and nausea.

The grinding noise could be a fan bearing. It is pretty easy to remove the cover and just see if the fan(s) are spinning freely. If not, that is easy to get fixed.

Your computer is not dead, just the HD
You can replace your hardrive for $80 or so. It's not hard to do. maybe a friend can help. Hopefully, you have the original disks that your Windows operating system came on and you can just load them up. If not, call the company you bought the computer from, explain the situation, and they should help you out. Otherwise, you'll also have to buy another copy of the operating system.

Thank you. This is maddening for me since I am not into computers and don't understand them very well. This one is working fine but it is Windows ME. I have lots of pictures we took when we were working on our house that I will miss but my web pages are online so they are ok. I did put some pictures on a CD so I have some of them at least. Would an emachine work ok? Walmart has them at about $500 and that's alot better then Gateway's prices. I worked my computer really hard. It was good while it lasted.

Grinding Noise
The sound may be the disk read-head hitting the disks, in which case the hard drive is already gone. Sorry. The only solution to this is to backup. I use two hard drives and have one drive automatically echo what is on the other. I've had hard drives crash and it is not pretty. If there is extremely important information on the drive, there are services that will extract the disks in a clean room and put them into another drive and try to read them. Not cheap, obviously.Another common source of grinding noises are the bearings on the vent fan failing. In this case, the computer should boot up again after it cools down. But that doesn't sound likely given your symptoms.Best of luck!

Using the Feds and an excuse
The NJ bill that is in the Assembly right now (A933) deals with these Federal concerns right near the top of the bill. Here's paragraphs 2-4 in the statements section of the bill. The most important one, regarding Mass., is the last one: b. According to the U.S. Sentencing Commission and the Federal Bureau of Investigation, 99 out of every 100 marijuana arrests in the country are made under state law, rather than under federal law. Consequently, changing state law will have the practical effect of protecting from arrest the vast majority of seriously ill people who have a medical need to use marijuana. c. Although federal law currently prohibits the use of marijuana, the laws of Alaska, California, Colorado, Hawaii, Maine, Nevada, Oregon, Vermont, Washington and Montana permit the use of marijuana for medical purposes, and in Arizona doctors are permitted to prescribe marijuana. New Jersey joins this effort for the health and welfare of its citizens. d. States are not required to enforce federal law or prosecute people for engaging in activities prohibited by federal law; therefore, compliance with this act does not put the State of New Jersey in violation of federal law.

My computer isn't that old but out of warranty. It came up with black and white numbers but that's as far as I got with it. We are trying to find someone who can work on it but there just aren't people that do that around here. I am looking at e machines and wonder if something like that would work ok. Walmart has a relatively cheap computer but I've had a Gateway my last 3 computers and am nervous about other types of computers but this one didn't last but about 14 months.

The Feds won't stop arresting sick people....
So they won't either? Sounds like a compassionate decision. It's against the Constitution that's for darn sure, but not like the wise lawmakers indicated.According to these people, I actually don't have the right to dye my hair because hair dying is not listed as one of my rights in the Bill of Rights. I've heard it before. "Where in the Constitution or Bill of Rights does it say you have the right to dye your hair?"Aaargh.Toker00, I really liked what you...or perhaps it was Mayan, said about students having the right to try and change the laws and he shouldn't tell them otherwise.

Uh-Oh
Sorry, unrelated, but it looks like another slow news weekend. If Bush falters in what has been his most consistent perceived strength(war on terror) he will spiral into a free-fall and will most certainly bring down the entire republican party in the mid-terms. That is not an option for the neo-cons as the "war on terror" is an integral part of the PNAC agenda, to which they are already fully committed. One way or another the neo-cons know they must maintain congress which will likely only happen if the elections are suspended. With the highly unpopular and mysterious UAE port deal and 9/11 truth finally inching towards the mainstream things don't look good at all for them. They are now backed into a corner and can only lash outward. November seems so very far away.Bush Approval Drops as Strength on Terrorism Fades, Poll Shows:

Harry Browne
Excerpt from link in comment #6 by Alexander Green“I first discovered Harry Browne more than 20 years ago, when I read his classic book, How I Found Freedom In An Unfree World. In it, he describes how many of us become "unfree" by forever trying to live up to someone else's expectations, rather than our own. He places the blame squarely on our own erroneous thinking. And suggests a remedy called "Starting From Zero," where you sweep away every aspect of your current life that doesn't correspond to your dream life.
Too radical? Perhaps. But Harry was a radical thinker. And "Freedom," Harry insisted, "requires bold action." “http://rense.com/general69/harry.htmThanks mayan. I really admired the way this man operated.

Dr. DEAth
What do these doctors know? Those at the DEA and other law enforcement agencies know much more about medicine than these know it all doctors. I just might go down to the local police station later on to see if the cops know what's wrong with my sore foot. On a more serious note, Dr. Steven Dunn, M.D. did a wonderful job of making the prohibitionists look extremely ignorant and inhumane. I just can't imagine anyone being so barbaric as to prevent folks from having the medicine that could help them. It just blows my mind! I have come to the conclusion that most prohibitionists were probably abused as children. I'm dead serious. How else can their behavior be explained? I just can't figure it out. Here are some good reads...Resolution to Impeach Bush-Cheney Passes 7-3 (S.F.)

I sent this to Emelie Rutherford:
"To the Editor,
It was stated in the article “Medical Pot Use Up In Smoke” “The committee, he said, didn’t "even really get to the issue of whether it should be allowed or not, because it was against the federal law and Constitution." This is a bold face lie. It does not state anywhere in the Constitution that it's against the law. Actually cannabis prohibition is counter to what is written in the Constitution, Declaration of Independence and the Bill of Rights". I doubt it will make it into their paper though.Mac in New Mexico

Medical Pot Use Up In Smoke***By Emelie Rutherford, Daily News StaffSaturday, March 4, 2006 BOSTON -- Lawmakers effectively killed a bill to legalize marijuana for medical use in Massachusetts, citing concerns about a recent U.S. Supreme Court decision allowing federal agents to arrest people who use pot to ease their pain or nausea from chemotherapy treatment.
The joint Public Health Committee sent a medical marijuana bill to be studied on Wednesday, thus stopping it from advancing to the full Legislature and effectively killing it this session.
"It was about the Supreme Court decision," state Rep. Peter Koutoujian, D-Waltham, House chairman of the committee, said about why the bill was sent to study.
The committee, he said, didn’t "even really get to the issue of whether it should be allowed or not, because it was against the federal law and Constitution."
State Rep. Frank Smizik, D-Brookline, had filed the bill. Its co-sponsors include state Reps. Deborah Blumer, D-Framingham, and Ruth Balser, D-Newton.
The Supreme Court’s 6-3 decision last year allows federal agents to arrest people who use pot to treat pain regardless of whether their states have legalized medical marijuana. Rhode Island earlier this year became the 11th state to allow medical marijuana, joining states including Maine and Vermont.
At the State House, separate legislation to decriminalize the possession of small amounts of marijuana was endorsed two weeks ago by the joint Mental Health and Substance Abuse Committee. That bill to make possession of less than one once of marijuana a civil offense is now before the Senate Ways and Means Committee.
