Springfield -- As a Chicago lawmaker pushes a proposal to legalize medical-use marijuana, a former drug-policy adviser to President George W. Bush is touring the state lecturing against the practice. The conflict reached a head this week when Rep. Larry McKeon, D-Chicago, challenged Dr. Andrea Barthwell to a public debate about medical marijuana. Barthwell declined the challenge.
"I have no need to engage in street theater," Barthwell said.McKeon charged that Barthwell's seminars appear to be a smear campaign against his proposal. The lawmaker - who is living with AIDS - said House Bill 407 attempts to improve the quality of life for terminally ill patients struggling with the debilitating side effects of chemotherapy and other treatments."This is about dealing with health problems that traditional medications have failed at," McKeon said. The proposal would allow individuals with a debilitating medical condition or their caretakers to own up to 12 cannabis plants and 21/2 ounces of usable cannabis. Individuals would be registered confidentially with the Illinois Department of Human Services and receive an identification card exempting them from arrest, prosecution or penalty. The measure also allows for the creation of not-for-profit organizations to grow the limited amount of marijuana plants for registered patients.Source: Peoria Journal Star (IL) Published: Wednesday, February 9, 2005Copyright: 2005 Peoria Journal Star Website: http://pjstar.com/ Contact: comment pjstar.com Related Articles & Web Site:Medical Marijuana Information Linkshttp://freedomtoexhale.com/medical.htm Speaker: Legalizing Pot a Bad Idea http://cannabisnews.com/news/thread20163.shtmlMarijuana Bill Set Aside Before It Gets a Hearing http://cannabisnews.com/news/thread18436.shtmlMedical Marijuana and Its Witless Enemieshttp://cannabisnews.com/news/thread18415.shtml

Street Theater
Don't forget, the last time she debated, she lost big-time for all to see:

Thinking mechanisms tripped
"The guy regularly smokes fifty cigarettes of marijuana a day?... It must not be all THAT powerful a drug."Thinking mechanism primed! Further thought may follow.(You know fifty hits of marijuana a day, regularly, would be exceptionally heavy smoking...wouldn't it?)

When it stays "Hot" long enough
Even some ordinarily non thinking prohibitionists will begin to wonder why they refuse to debate the subject. The more outrageous their lies get, the more likely they are to trip a thinking mechanism in someones head...they need to think. Really think. It's good to be a "Hot Topic", finally. It's important. It'a rather a milestone, I hope, as opposed to the one step forward, two steps backwards waltz we've been doing with this problem for years and years and years. Remember when some days we'd be lucky to have three new articles to post at MAP? I do. I've seen it increase...drastically over the years. We talked...we primed the talking and thinking "pumps" of the world. I mean everyone. From the greatest to the smallest. Whoever frowned upon any of the "fruit" of the drug war. Whoever spoke. Whoever wrote. Whoever helped.Remember when virtually NO ONE talked about it? Remember how they laughed when you said "medical use marijuana"? They aren't laughing anymore.Goal in sight clearly, once again, Fom! We are proceeding.

Hope, it's a little too early
But on one front, it is certainly good news. An AIDS activist surviving the disease is publicly challenging the 'expert' who says his methods don't work. The PR Factor meter is being pegged by this, as other HIV/AIDS organizations are bound to jump on the bandwagon. Not only that, but "Dr." Barthwell is a private citizen now. She has no hugely powerful legal apparatus paid for by the public to shield her. The very thing used to crush us can be trained on her, with an expectation of success. The long awaited debate between reformers and prohibs may actually happen in the Illinois State Legislature in 2005, if McKeown gets his way.

I haven't got my glasses on. But this looks like good news. It's about time.

A repost
From Pete Guither at DrugWarRant http://blogs.salon.com/0002762/ we have the following link:
Medical marijuana issue heats up State legislator wants debate with doctor who is challenging practice http://www.sj-r.com/Sections/News/Stories/47449.aspRep. Larry McKeon, D-Chicago, has challenged Dr. Andrea Barthwell to a public debate about medical marijuana. Barthwell declined the challenge. McKeown is saying Barthwell's work is a 'smear campaign' against his House Bill 407 proposal.Barthwell denigrates debate as 'street theater'. but you can only run for so long, Andrea dear; you may as well face us now and get it over with. You aren't working for The Man now. You have no shield anymore protecting you from the requirements any private citizen has WHEN SUBPOENEAD TO TESTIFY (hint, hint, hint for you lawyer activists in Illinois; a great method to make her stand and deliver in front of a legislative forum to prove allegations of cannabis's 'dangerous qualities'; she's such an 'expert', you know). But get this: one of the provisions of the bill would make it a crime for State LEO's to 'refer' MMJ cases to the Feds when their hands are tied by State laws. The cops whine it's 'draconian', as Laimutis Nargelenas of the Illinois Association of Chiefs of Police put it.Fancy that; they get their footsies jammed in the same tight shoes we live with, and they start crying and hollering. Awwwwww, poor baaaaaabies!
