Atlanta -- The town of Hempstead - the one in New York - has a message for Gwinnett County school administrators: Before you target a student wearing a Hempstead shirt, look at a map.Terrell Jones, a student in Gwinnett County’s Grayson High School, was weeded out of a classroom by a school administrator because he wore a shirt that read: “Hempstead, NY 516,” a reference to the Long Island town and its telephone area code.
According to Jones’ family, which moved from Hempstead to the Atlanta suburb, the school thought the shirt referred to marijuana. Jones wasn’t allowed to return to class until he persuaded school officials to search the Internet for the town name. The town’s Web site says the area may have been named for Hemel-Hempstead, England. Another theory cites the Dutch city of Heemstede, because settlers had come years earlier from the Netherlands. In any case, “before they would jump to any conclusions, they should be sure of what they’re talking about,” town spokeswoman Susie Trenkle said of the Georgia officials.Hempstead is the nation’s largest township, with 759,000 residents spread across 22 villages and more than 142 square miles, she said. The student’s father, James Jones, said he wants an apology for Monday’s incident. School district officials did not return a call for comment.Terrell Jones says he will keep wearing the shirt to school. The hemp plant is related to the marijuana plant, and its fiber has been used for centuries to make rope and other products. But it contains small amounts of THC, the substance that gets people high, and U.S. farmers are barred by federal law from growing hemp. It's not just for smoking!
Thank you Mayan for posting on one the most well written and condensed historys of prohibition I've ever read. Comment #8 War on hemp URL, 8-26-04. It is all what I've been saying for the last twenty five years. The re-legalalization of cannabis/hemp is the most important subject in our lives. No it's not just for smoking. Not by along shot!Thank you,
Namaste

Synonyms
bissextile - of or having to do with a leap year. I'm bissextile, as I was born in 1940. Anyone born in 1939 is not bissextile.niggardly - cheap, stingy. The administration is niggardly in funding their "no child left behind" program, while not at all niggardly in funding the lying propaganda bs put out by Johnny "Pee" Walters.Cheers:?

ekim, the Hempalow
If this old earth keeps going long enough that these years become history...those thoughtless freaks that are trying to wipe out the hemp plant will be considered in the same light of idiocy as those who foolishly wiped out herds and herds of bison to keep the American Indian from having them. Are these people the same idiots reincarnated again over and over...or are they brand new idiots?

remember when the poor shuttle came down in pieces. just so happen that the nose cone landed in Hemphill Texas that was named after the Hemp plant that grew there for decades before it was outlawed because of cotton growers.

The Denver police
The citizens of Denver are so fed up with the misdeeds of the DPD that they are moving to have them governed by some body of outside observers.

shades of Billabong
US CA: Column: Ban On 'Bong T-Shirts Goes Up In SmokeURL: http://www.mapinc.org/drugnews/v00/n697/a08.html Pubdate: Fri, 26 May 2000... A few students had begun coming to class in inappropriate, some would even say disturbing clothing--T-shirts with the word "bong" printed prominently on them. A bong being a pipe utilized in smoking marijuana, school was obviously no place for this kind of radical pro-dope apparel! Adam Szadkowski, a junior, wore one, and a math teacher instructed him to march directly to a restroom and turn it inside out. Then the school banned the shirts. Swift, decisive action. That's what this land of ours needs more of--role models to teach younger generations how to conduct themselves properly. Uh, except for one thing. What was written on the shirt wasn't "bong." What was written on the shirt was "Billabong"--as common a brand name as Nike or Abercrombie & Fitch. The shirts are manufactured by Billabong USA, a company headquartered in Irvine. The word is Australian in origin and defines a branch to a lagoon, a watering hole. You see the shirts on surfers and swimmers all the time. Now, the surfing in Wisconsin stinks. But that doesn't mean a Billabong shirt is out of place. Szadkowski is a swimmer. He asked in jest if a shirt with "Potato" on it would be OK, since part of that word is "Pot." It took a little while, but he and others eventually clarified this for Principal Ed Dombrowski, who lifted the ban. ...

It's beyond obvious
This reminds me of the controversy that went on for 30 years over why some of the male students of a famous Greek mathematician had female names.Classical scholars argued for thirty years over why some Greek men had names that were technically women's names. They made up all kinds of crazy reasons. It turned out that these men had female names BECAUSE THEY WERE WOMEN.It was just an ideology by sexist academia that any students of a Greek mathematician had to be male. Theys pent 30 years making up silly reasons to protect an ideology. The most obvious explanation for why someone would have a woman's name is -- the person is a woman. The most obvious explanation for how Hempstead came to be named Hempstead is -- the farmers were growing hemp.
