A local businesswoman and pro-marijuana-legalization activist is putting her money where her mouth is by raffling off an expensive water pipe to benefit the RGL Volunteer Fire Department.Ina Kurz, owner of the Rockwood General Store, claims she stands among community leaders and other upstanding citizens as a supporter of the drug, and those who dabble in its recreational use should not be thought of as criminals.
Kurz, known in the area for organizing the pro-marijuana Woodrock festivals in 1997 and 1998, has also run on the Peace and Freedom Party ticket for the Ephratah town justice seat and lost three times. She has also been a volunteer for Marijuana Reform Party gubernatorial candidate Thomas K. Leighton.Kurz has owned and operated the only "head shop" in the county - the Rockwood General Store - for 28 years.Kurz's effort to support the Rockwood-Garoga-Lasselsville Fire Department is being received with polite hesitancy by Fire Chief and Town Supervisor Todd Bradt, although he doesn't agree with the politics behind the offer."I am personally grateful for the offer, but I don't approve of the marijuana angle," he said. "Maybe if it were legal, it would be different. At the same time, we get along okay. I wouldn't want to step on her toes."Kurz said the large, specially made smoking device is called "The Twin Towers" in honor of the victims of the attacks on the World Trade Center. Kurz said she is sure there were many victims of the tragedy at Ground Zero who had smoked pot. "I think that it's perfectly appropriate," she said. But Bradt said he doesn't agree because so many firefighters lost their lives during the response and rescue stages of the effort at Ground Zero. "In her way of thinking, maybe it's great," Bradt said. "But I don't think that it's very appropriate. Besides, I'm up for re-election in September. I really don't need the bad association."Bradt was appointed to the supervisor position to finish out the term left vacant by Bessie Floyd, who unexpectedly resigned and moved away from the area last year. He hopes to serve for the remaining two years of Floyd's term, and then if successful, he will run for his first full, four-year term in 2004.Kurz said she wouldn't take the association so badly. "Raising money for the firehouse is the least of it," she said. She said her aim is to raise awareness of the futility and injustice of anti-marijuana laws as well as a recent push for the repeal of New York's Rockefeller Laws. "People go through Hell because the laws go against the First Amendment," she said."People have their jobs held over their heads because they choose to use marijuana. These laws are [at the whim] of only a few politicians choosing who can do what." Kurz said her customers of marijuana paraphernalia include health professionals, law enforcement officials, government employees and other "heads" of the community. But not everybody is hip to the lingo. "I had a hard time trying to explain to the [members of the fire company] just what a bong is," Bradt said. "Not too many people knew." Despite the potential controversy, Bradt said he doesn't want to pass judgment. "Ina's not a bad lady, and we have a decent relationship." Kurz says a person should not be defined by his or her use of the drug. "You are not a bad person if you smoke marijuana," she said. Note: Marijuana activist to raffle off bong to raise cash for area fire department.Source: Leader-Herald, The (NY)Author: George A. The real truth
' Bradt said. "But I don't think that it's very appropriate. Besides, I'm up for re-election in September. I really don't need the bad association" 'This is the real reason, plain and simple. And when the real reason is printed for all to see, no tricks, right in front of your face.... well... that's just the thing, isn't it? The truth.slyin green, foxyin kind......-gf

Gender Comment (que the music)
I'm a Man
(Winwood/Miller)Well, my pad is very messy and there's whiskers on my chin

And I'm all hung up on music, and I always play to win

I ain't got no time for lovin' 'cause my time is all used up

Just sittin' 'round creatin' all that groovy kind of stuff Well, I'm a man, yes I am, and I can't help but love you so Well, I'm a man, yes I am, and I can't help but love you so Well, if I had my choice of matter I would rather be with cats

All engrossed in mental chatter showin' where our minds are at,

And relating to each other just how strong our will can be

In resisting all involvments with each groovy chick we see
Well, I'm a man, yes I am, and I can't help but love you so

Well, I'm a man, yes I am, and I can't help but love you so
I've got to keep my image while suspended on a throne

That looks out upon a kingdom filled with people all unknown

Who imagine I'm not human and my heart is made of stone And I've never had no problems and my toilet's trimmed with gold Well, I'm a man, yes I am, and I can't help but love you so

Well, I'm a man, yes I am, and I can't help but love you so

...yup...
..far be it for me to rain on anyones parade,,or ball game.....I think that professional sports is linked to terrorism, because terrorists use the national diversion to further their axis of evil-doings...

...I wanna see a ondcp commercial,,with Dennis Rodman,,saying,,"I bought an ounce of coke last nite."..with the money I made from the NBA.........the NBA..now linked to terrorists!!!..... and yes,,,pro sports,,and pro music have alot in common....Does anyone think that Britanny Spears would be anything if she looked like Getty Lee,,or Janet Reno?..?

most
of that money comes from sponsors. You know what else rely on corporate sponsers now? Music festivals. Most everything. Playing a game of 4 on 4 touch football is more exciting than watching the superbowl, but I still like watching football. Costs me nothing. I change the channels during commericals. LoL.

...Thank you for articulating the reality of the situation!.....I feel the same!....Sports are now severly infested with disgusting corporate bogartisms...........last week,,,I saw Dennis Rodman at a four way stop ..He was driving one of the coolest Mercedes I've ever seen........I admit,,,if I had ended up as dddd Rodman,,,I would insist on getting my share of the jillions of dollars that the team owners, and NBA rake in.......BUT..in the real world,,"sports" are not worthy of the hype, and fanfare that corporate commercialism has bestowed on them!.
..

....I think that an equivelent excitement could be had in a game of Crazy Eights, between me and eltoonces!,,or a Canasta tournament between Troutmask, and Indy!......My Dad is a Cribbage freek!......dddd

There is a St. Louis, Illinois
and a Kansas City, Kansas, and they're both separated from their Missouri counterparts by the Mississippi and Missouri rivers respectively.Either city could move their teams across the river, yet still technically be considered Kansas City or St. Louis teams.Sneaky.

The Cardinals wanted the taxpayers of
Missouri to fund a new stadium, and when it looked like it wasn't going to happen, they threatened to move to Illinois. They didn't get their stadium. The next move is theirs, one way or another.

the good
It's entertaining. People like it. What good comes from a sit com? Taxpayers pay for a lot of frivolous things. Of course it's a business. So is everything. It's not about good or bad.

Sports
C'mon ... as a shoe company says ...Just Do It ... kick the habitor as Nancy said ... Just say NO ...Professional sports are not a sport, they are a business ..I had little trouble giving up the watching of any and all professional businesses, sorry, sports when I realized that all they wanted was my money. But this , that, those ... hats, shirts, coats, jerzys, stadium jackets, drink jugs ... all that crap.Come pay 50 dollars for a seat ...pay for parking ...buy outrageously priced food ...watch outrageously paid "atheletes."What GOOD comes to a city that has a team?Taxpayers pay for the stadiums, and many can't afford to go to games with the family.A few years ago Detroit won the Stanley Cup, it still was a crappy city to live in the next day with underfunded schools, too much crime ...But my sister-in-law and husband still extoll the glory of the victory while sending their children to private schools. The OU and OSU fans in this state are fanatic while we lose population and a representative due to the poor economy and job market.I guess I could go on for quite a while, but I will stop here.Anyone care to extoll the Good gotten from a pro team?

it's almost
unavoidable not to be a hockey fan in Canada. Sports are part of the bread and circuses package fed to us. As long as people are fed and entertained, they don't care. Obviously, there will always be a percentage who do care, but not a large one.

.....sports....
...I read somewhere,,that sports are kinda like the opium for the masses in the way that they divert peoples interests from the real, and truly important issues like scrutinizing their government, and political realm...
...and.. ..I would tend to agree.....Why?...well,,to begin with,,look at the local,or national network "news"...most "news" broadcasts are at least 25% weather,,,35% sports,,,and the remainder is usually spent on irrelevant, but commercially popular fluff!...a shark attack,,or any of the zillions of insignificant, trivial stories will fill in most of the remaining time...There is very little real substance to the things we get to see.....the political items in the news, might as well be honestly labeled...they are little more than mandatorily broadcast press releases from the obscure empire Office of Information!...PRAVDA.....("truth")

...I kinda dont care about sports,,,but it becomes almost unavoidable to get involved when your home team is kickin' ass...I'll bet EJ kinda likes the Lakers.....dddd

still
hurting from the world cup. No shame in losing to Brasil though. The world cup is the best sporting event. About 15 countries have a legitimate shot at winning, not like most tropies. It's bittersweet that it's only every four years.

By "Role Models" I meant
people who were good enough at their craft to keep me interested. I know what you're talking about as far as excitement, but when the team you love is the all-time best team at losing in the ninth, it really starts to suck.

role models
I don't understand why athletes have to be role models. It is ridiculous they make that much money, but that much money is being made. Should the owners get it all? Playing sports are alot more fun than watching, but there's the same sort of excitement generated from watching sports that doesn't seem to come from anything else on TV.

I used to watch sports, even in person
I lived in the Kansas City area back when the Chiefs won the Superbowl, the Royals were good, and we could afford tickets. They're not exactly good sports role models anymore.I'd rather watch something funny. Well, more funny. They're really pathetic to watch.

Tonight I watched Deliverance. I still don't understand what happened when Voight shot that mountain man but shot himself at the same time?Off topic, I watched the Asa DML tonight (it doesn't air until Sat in Canada) and cannot believe anyone said Dennis was sucking up. Consistently he disagreed with drugs being illegal. He brought up medicinal marijuana. He asked questions that flustered Asa. I thought it was hilarious, at one point, talking about treatment, Dennis asked "what if someone tells you 'fuck you, I don't want treatment'?" Asa didn't look to comfertable with the profanity. He did compliment Asa, but it was an abstract compliment, applying the posistion not the man nor the policies.
