Good advice!
Source: Good Housekeeping
Q: Since her divorce, my longtime best friend has started doing drugs — both cocaine and marijuana — and I'm frantic with worry. I'm considering staging an intervention, but is that the most effective tactic?
A: Interventions can work, but only if they're done with great care. Your friend has gone through a divorce. The last thing you want to do is thrust her into a roomful of people she trusts who might appear to have turned against her because of her drug use. This sort of traumatic confrontation could backfire: Feeling abandoned by her old friends, she'll most likely turn to other companions, the ones she's doing drugs with, for solace. Before taking any action, get advice from experts, and not just one but several. I'd suggest you first call your state health department's division of alcohol and substance abuse, and ask for advice on the best way to help your friend. I'd also contact at least one therapist with expertise in counseling addicts. My personal opinion is that the kind of intervention you have in mind is best used as a last resort, after other treatment programs have failed. Intervention shouldn't be used until all else fails, I believe. How about you?
