An Assembly panel was urged Wednesday to pass a bill closing a loophole that let marijuana farmers grow up to 99 pounds of pot and avoid cultivation charges. "Someone noticed it's OK to grow marijuana in this state," Washoe County Deputy District Attorney Gemma Waldron told the Assembly Judiciary Committee. "The bill closes a loophole in the law." SB242 stems from a 1999 law change that inadvertently erased a specific penalty for growing up to 99 pounds of marijuana. But people caught growing such amounts still could face possession rather than cultivation charges.
"This deals with growing one pound or more of marijuana," Waldron said. "When it's over a pound of marijuana someone is growing, it's usually for sales - it's a business. It's much more serious." Assemblyman Tom Collins, D-North Las Vegas, said he wasn't surprised at the loophole because of the "backwardness of the way the state has been run." Assembly Judiciary Chairman Bernie Anderson, D-Sparks, said the bill won't conflict with a medical marijuana bill that won approval in his committee. AB453, sponsored by Assemblywoman Chris Giunchigliani, D-Las Vegas, authorizes medical use of marijuana and decriminalizes possession of small amounts of pot. The Assembly measure calls for an Oregon-style system that would let anyone qualifying for medical marijuana grow up to seven plants. The bill would create a state registry for all patients whose doctors recommend they use marijuana for medical reasons. People with cancer, AIDS, glaucoma, severe pain and nausea would be eligible for a marijuana user card. I'll Try To Answer
Hello davanita,Thank You for your interesting comments. You are young I read on another post and oh how I know how you feel. You are idealistic and so was I. Now I am old and tired but still have a passion for truth and fairness. To answer your question we elect people into office that have the most money to spend to get their message out. If a person has a vision like Harry Browne, he is barely heard on tv. It takes lots of money to win any signifigant political office. Until we reform campaign finance laws this is the way it will be. Thank You for your comments and I hope this helps answer your question.

Hmmmm. . .
Now that I think about it, I knew I guy while I was stationed in Germany who was named "Tom Collins." His dad was a congressperson, and he had loads of money. It was assumed that he joined the Army so that later in his political career he could claim to have been an Army veteran. That was in the late 1980s.As I recall, the guy was quite a lush, and he was very free with his money, buying rounds of drinks for his friends all the time. I wonder if this is the same "Tom Collins" I knew? That would be interesting.Dan B

Irony
Did anyone else notice that one of the state assemblymen quoted was named "Tom Collins"?This guy is actually named after a popular alcoholic drink! That's irony for you.Dan B
