Insisting it's not a pipe dream, thousands of people rallied to legalize marijuana at rallies in dozens of cities around the world Saturday. In Manitoba, for instance, about 150 people puffed on joints outside the legislature. They called on governments to stop treating them as criminals. "If everybody in this world smoked weed, this world would be so calm," said one woman.
Hundreds of people marched in parades in other Canadian communities, including Toronto and Montreal. Some dressed up as large green leaves. Others carried bright green ballons. Many waved lit joints and signs. They were taking part in an international campaign dubbed the "Million Marijuana March" – organized largely over the Internet. The president of the Marijuana Party of Canada, Marc-Brois St-Maurice, called on Ottawa to impose a moratorium on prosecuting people caught possessing the drug. "They could do this right away," St-Maurice told a crowd in Montreal. "So we could start an open debate without people being afraid of being labelled as criminals." Canadians who smoke marijuana say they're pleased they've recently won the right to use the drug for medical purposes under certain conditions. From April 6, 2001 : Ottawa Outlines Plan for Marijuana as Medicine:But it's only the first step towards their goal of making the drug as accessible and legal as alcohol. Supporters believe the movement is gaining momentum. The Marijuana Party, for instance, has expanded in many places. In B.C., it's one of only three political groups fielding candidates in all 79 ridings during this month's provincial election campaign. http://cbc.ca/cgi-bin/templates/view.cgi?/news/2001/04/06/marijuana_rules010406Marijuana Party of Canada http://www.marijuanaparty.com/In-Depth: Medical Marijuanahttp://cbc.ca/news/indepth/background/medical_marijuana.htmlSource: CBC News (CA)Published: Saturday, May 05, 2001 Written by CBC News Online Staff Copyright © 2001 CBCWebsite: http://cbc.ca/CannabisNews Articles - Million Marijuana Marchhttp://cannabisnews.com/thcgi/search.pl?K=mmm

Marching in Saskatoon,Sask.
Saskatoon had a lovely march.Hundreds smoked openly on the steps of city hall and no-one was at all disturbed. The only policeman on the scene signed the nomination papers for our local Marijauna party candidate and he signed a petition to legalize! The local farmers market was swarmed with heads looking for munchies.I want to give lots of credit to the excellent organizational skills of NORMLSASK and its' affiliates.A very cool and low key affair AND the community got to see that smokers aren't monsters and criminals.I wish all the marches had gone as well as they did here.Shame on the NYPD!

marijuana march
Tha marijuana march in Albuquerque, New Mexico could have been bigger. But I think, for the most part, everyone who could come, came down to show their support. I want to thank everyone who came, and everyone honking, showing that we are not criminals. That woman was right, if everyone smoked weed the world would be such a calmer, more relaxed place. Next year's march is gonna be bigger, and we need the help of everyone who knows that this is not right to keep us from something that can be so useful. In making us feel good, and making things we need. It's cheaper than trees guys. Show your support to your local stoners. Legalize!!!
