Several thousand people took part in a march Saturday protesting laws criminalizing marijuana use. "Marijuana is good medicine" and "Stop all cannabis arrests" read some of the signs at the march, which began just after 1 p.m. and moved along one lane of Broadway from Houston Street toward City Hall and then Battery Park. "We want to turn an alcohol and tobacco world into a marijuana world," said Dana Beal, one of the march organizers, who led the group wearing a rumpled brown corduroy suit.
Vocal participants in the Cures Not Wars 2001 march followed a banner reading "End the prison state." Many argued for the legalization of medical use of marijuana; others voiced support for legalized recreational use of the drug. A carnival-type atmosphere was accentuated by chants including "We smoke pot and we like it a lot" and by erupting cheers whenever a double-decker tour bus passed. Some people handed out rolling paper made of hemp. There were no apparent signs of marijuana use along the march route, which was heavily lined with police, but when the marchers reached Battery Park, the smell of the drug was evident. Plain clothes police officers quietly led people away, but police did not report any immediate arrests. Earlier, two men had been pulled from the line of march and detained by police. Uh, folks, just a suggestion?
Last year, I marched in the July 4th rally in Washington DC. With the notable exception of the after rally invasion by truncheon-wielding cops, the rally went off with few hitches. But I have to tell you, friends, the marching slogans were lame.LameIf you think "We smoke pot and we like it a lot!" garners us any attention beyond "Look at those silly potheads! Let's go get some beer" you are sadly mistaken. If you think "We're high! We're here! Get used to it!" will give any observers along the way the sense that we are a force to be reckoned with, with an serious agenda that goes beyond mere hedonism, think again. But marching in orderly formation,in rows, as one body, with one voice, informing the public along the way that "Peter McWilliams: murdered by the Feds!" or "Patient's Rights, Yes! Federal tyranny NO!" or "Patients can't wait! Medical Cannabis NOW!"...that gets people's attention. And some of them will ask questions as to why we march. Which is the whole point behind the effort, isn't it?Only a suggestion :)
