America's Children Sacrificed by Drug Legalizers

By Congressman Bob Barr
Source: HillSource

Recently, the Supreme Court heard the case of U.S. v. Oakland Cannabis Buyers’ Cooperative; the issue of so-called “medical marijuana.” Although a ruling by the Court is not expected for several months, its significance for our future, for our children, cannot be overstated.Directly defying our efforts as a Congress and a nation, a small group of well-funded activists have engaged in deceptive, back-door, efforts to legalize drugs that are already banned under federal law. Proponents hide behind the myth of the so-called ``medical'' use of marijuana, despite the fact that there is no scientific proof this mind-altering substance provides any real medical relief.
From a purely political standpoint, the medicinal strategy has worked rather well for the legalizers. Backed by a handful of wealthy patrons like George Soros, in a few short years legalization advocates have transformed themselves from socially unacceptable pariahs into the darlings of the national media.Increasingly, however, they have abandoned even this pretense, and made clear that their goal is the legalization or decriminalization of narcotic drugs. One activist called it the ``leaky bucket strategy ..... legalize it in one area, and sooner or later it will trickle down into the others.'' The bucket is now leaking faster than ever.A lackadasical attitude towards America’s drug war cannot be tolerated because our children will be the real victims. According to a study published in the Journal of the American Medical Association last year, non-drug users who lived in households where drugs, including marijuana, are used are 11 times as likely to be killed as those living in drug-free households. So if a young person or an individual comes from a house where drugs are being used, this study by the American Medical Association said they increase their chances of being killed by 11 times.Marijuana was, and still is, a gateway drug; a dangerous mind altering substance that leads to abuse of other drugs like heroin, LSD, cocaine, and most recently, Ecstasy, and similar so-called “designer drugs.”These “designer drugs” are rapidly becoming the drug of choice among America’s young people, and the consequences can be deadly. It is perceived by many as harmless because the negative effects are not immediately noticeable. For this reason, it is not surprising that Monitoring the Future, an annual study that monitors illicit drug use among teenagers, reported Ecstasy use growing. Lifetime use among 12th graders increased from one in fifteen in 1998 to one in twelve in 1999. Past year use went from one in twenty-five in 1998 to one in fifteen in 1999. This is a disturbing upward trend.Ecstasy is a dangerous drug that can be lethal. Many are unaware it can cause increased heart rate, nausea, fainting, chills, and sleep problems. In addition to physical effects, there are also psychological effects such as panic, confusion, anxiety, depression, and paranoia. Scientists are also learning that Ecstasy may cause irreversible brain damage, and in some cases it simply stops the heart. With recent reports of rises in Ecstasy seizures by the U.S. Customs Service, it seems we have a long, hard battle ahead of us. In fiscal year 1999, Customs seized 3 million doses of Ecstasy . In the first 5 months of fiscal year 2000, Customs seized 4 million doses. Ecstasy has become such a threat that Customs has established an Ecstasy Task Force to gather intelligence on criminal smuggling of Ecstasy. Customs has also trained 13 dogs to detect Ecstasy among those crossing the border and entering major airports. We need to put an end to the spread of Ecstasy into our communities. All of us must work together and educate our young people of the dangers of “designer drugs.” That begins by having a clear and unequivocal message that drug use is wrong. I hope the Supreme Court spreads that message this fall. Mr. Barr is a patological liar
It has been proven numerous times that cannabis is one of the most medicinal herbs known to man.1. Glaucoma- Glaucoma occurs when their is too much pressure in the eyes. Smoking cannabis can release the pressure in the eyes. The sleepy eyes look is by no means a "harmful effect", as my school would like me to believe.2. Cemotherapy- When on cemotherapy, extreme vomitting may occur. Cannabis can be very effecient in reducing naseau.3. AIDS- AIDS decreases the users appitite, while cannabis can increase it. "The Munchies" is just another term for appetite stimulation.4. Period Cramps- Midol is not neccessary. All women need to do to relieve their cramps is smoke cannabis.5. Mutiple Scerosis- Cannabis increases body feel, as well mind/body connection. It is not a myth. These are mythsMMyth: Marijuana is more harmful on the lungs than cigarettesFact: Because cigarettes are addictive, the average cigarette smoker may smoke a pack of cigarettes a day- 20 cig. a day. Les than one percent of marijuana smokers would ever smoke that much marijuana. Besides, cigarettes are laced with acetone, cyanide, arsenic, and many other deady poisons. Cigarettes kill thousands of people a year, while marijuana has never killed anyone.Myth: Marijuana is more potent now than it was in the '60s, making it more harmful or "addictive".Fact: The more potent it is, the less you have to smoke to get high, therfore the less it harms your lungs.Myth: Marijuana is addictive.Fact: It has been proven that marijuana is not physically, mentally, emotionally, or psychologically addictive. In fact, it ahs been proven to be quite possibly the least habit forming substance know to mankind.

To BB
Mr. Barr,I am writing to you regarding your article that you had printed in HillSource.I find that you are not doing your job to uphold your constituents voices. I am very glad that I do not reside in your district. I would be ashamed to be represented by you.In your article you basically show your lack of knowledge of just what this government's drug war has done to it's citizens. You mock sick and dying people for pursuing relief. I thought that was one of our most fundamental rights. The right to pursue happiness. Medicinal marijuana is not a hoax. It may not be a cure, but it is an effective medication that has been used in history for 5000 years. I would think that in 5000 years people like you, who claim to know what is best for us, would have educated yourself on what you stand for.It is you and other representatives like yourself that are slowly taking the Free out of America the Free. You are not supporting people's civil rights, but instead, you are taking them away one by one.I hope you are very proud of your work. I hope to see you and all other representatives recalled that have lost sight of who gave them their jobs and whom they work for.

Hey Greg, Shausha....
I did write a quick letter to the person who wrote this article: Babar himself. I encourage others to do the same. Greg, since you are in his district, your comments will carry more clout. My letter in it's entirety:Your webpage section "about Bob Barr" claims that, "He (Bob Barr) has worked consistently to make government officials accountable to the people and our Constitution." I seem to recollect that Bob Barr was very vocally against allowing the results of a 1998 Wash. DC medical marijuana initiative to be counted. How does ignoring the will of the voters square with being "accountable to the people and our Constitution."?I appreciate that Bob Barr is too busy ignoring the will of the people to respond to anyone not in his district, and it is doubtful that he would have much to say concerning his hypocrisy anyway, so I really don't expect an answer. However, because I read Rep. Barr's diatribe about the "small group of well-funded activists (who)have engaged in deceptive, back-door, efforts to legalize drugs that are already banned under federal law", I was concerned that perhaps the Honorable Barr was confused. I too am part of this "small group" of 73% of US voters who believe that medical marijuana should be freely avialable to any patient who will find relief.I am not funded by George Soros, nor do I feel, as does Bob Barr, that the initiative process, whereby citizens use the ballot box to democratically indicate their wishes, represents a "deceptive, back-door, effort." Rather, I think that elected leaders who deem their constituents too ignorant or easily deceived to be able to make reasonable decisions at the ballot box are a far greater threat to our children than a "dangerous mind altering" herb that in over 5000 years of use has never killed anyone.

...thanks for the update, CNN somehow failed to cover this incedent...i must take this opportunity to tell you -none of my posts here or LTEs would have happenedwithout your amazing courage.when i heard of the activism of those with devastating illnesses,(specifically your cordial visit with the un-Representative)you more or less shamed this able-bodied person into action.thank you for being an example for us all.~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~and as for the comment: "...extremists like him who would overturn an election that legalized a medicine for sick & dying residents of our nation's capital will soon find themselves in the minority."as far as the general public goes, they already *are* in the minority, as the well-known (at least to us) poll demonstates.if these laughingly-called "representatives" actually "represented" the 73% of their constituents demanding change, your medicine would be legal by now.~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~now, i think i'll pick apart bob a bit, kind of like shooting fish in a barrel though:"...a small group of well-funded activists..."i suppose rapid prohibitions simply have to believe this, they are incapable of accepting its a broad, grassroots colalition from all walks of life."despite the fact that there is no scientific proof this mind-altering substance provides any real medical relief."tough to choose between:a) natually, since you refuse to allow research that might reach the wrong conclusion.b) as opposed to the overwhelming scientific proof that handcuffing people in wheelchairs provides real medical relief."non-drug users who lived in households where drugs, including marijuana, are used are 11 times as likely to be killed as those living in drug-free households."any stat on how much of this is directly caused by paramilitary raids and other aspects of prohibition?"Marijuana was, and still is, a gateway drug..."as has been roundly discredited by the govt's own studies trying to desperately come to the "correct" conclusion."All of us must work together and educate our young people of the dangers of designer drugs."and of course ruin the lives of our young people who reject your education as frothing at the mouth, by any means necessary.and my personal favorite:"Scientists are also learning that Ecstasy may cause irreversible brain damage, and in some cases it simply stops the heart."meanwhile, the american citizenry are also learning that being a rabid prohibitionist bigot may cause irreversible brain damage, and in some cases it simply stops the heart.~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~as kaptinemo regularly points out, it's heartening to read between the lines of Chicken bob Little barr's essay, frantically warning all the prohibitionist sky is falling,in a shill and desperate tone.~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~There is one thing stronger than all the armies in the world, and that is an idea whose time has come.~ Victor Hugo ~

Barr is a hypocritical Republican
Rep. Bob Barr is an anomaly - one one hand, he is standing up for privacy against the ever-expanding federal police state - yet on the other hand, he is totally blind to contradiction of a federal government hell-bent on squashing citizens' rights and desperate to regulate their mental state.Go visit his website and check out the section on Privacy. He is standing firm against the "sneak and peek" riders and that "Methamphetamine Anti-Proliferation Act", and was one of the major players in defeating the Justice Department's plans to do surrepticious search warrants. This is not the only area where Barr has taken the lead in trying to preserve civil liberties. But then he goes on a rampage to "protect the children", totally ignoring the IOM study clearly legitimizing the medicinal value of cannabis and debunking the "gateway myth". And if I'm not mistaken, he was the representative responsible for introducing/passing that unconstitutional piece of flotsam forbidding the counting of votes in D.C. regarding medical marijuana.Go figure. I still think such hypocritical, contradictory Republicans and Conservatives should be publically exposed for the political opportunists that they are - and to make room for REAL Republicans/Conservatives like Gary Johnson and William F. Buckley. People who are honest enough to publically stand up to this insane War on U.S. Citizens.-z

Scared of the sick and dying
I was in DC last week with Jacki Rickert and Jim & Cheryl Miller (www.cherylheart.org). After a day of lobbying our congress critters, we decided to pop up to take a quick picture at the scene of our protest at Barr's office in October 1999, when Jim was arrested. (see Jim Busted, Cheryl Put Back in Chair! http://cannabisnews.com/news/thread3364.shtml)Here we were, Jim pushing Cheryl in her chair, Cheryl immobilized with MS, and me pushing Jacki. As we approached his office, staffers saw us coming and ran inside, closing the door! Such a fearsome sight we must have been!We took our pictures, even had a passing Fed Ex guy snap one of the four of us together outside the closed office doors in the hallway. Then we headed downstairs and out of the building. Once out the front door, Capitol Police acting on a complaint from Barr's office detained us for 20 minutes or so, checking ID, etc.I guess we must have scared them pretty bad, when women in wheelchairs makes them run and hide. Barr is no patriot. He disenfranchised the people of DC. I think the tide is finally turning and extremists like him who would overturn an election that legalized a medicine for sick & dying residents of our nation's capital will soon find themselves in the minority.

More proof we're winning
I love to hear antis squeal like stuck pigs. As raucous and unpleasent the actual sound is, the pain behind it is a balm to my soul.Barr is, as the old saying goes, going where angels fear to tread. He is coming dangerously close to libel. His assertions that there is some sort of dangerous shadowy cabal at work behind the reform movement is demonstrating just how frightened the antis are.Frightened that we are gaining ground. Nothing like a good ol' scapegoat (Jews, Blacks, Albigensians, whatever) to stir up public sentiment and divert attention from your own failing agenda. And of courrse, he makes no mention whatsoever of the very incident which has really sparked this outburst...the 'success' of the Peruvian DrugWarriors in shooting and killing a little baby. Or how such commendable marksmanship was bought and paid for - with his votes to approve DrugWar budgets year after year. Or how some people are starting to make their anger visible in querying their Congresscritters and Sin-a-tors and letting them know what they think about it.Yes, DrugWarriors killed one of the children he professes to be ooooh-so-concerned about. An American mother and child dead because of his beloved DrugWar. No, we can't mention that, now can we? Squeal on, Mr. Barr. But you might want to coserve your strength for later.
