President Bush said Saturday he will "wait to see all the facts" before assigning blame for the deaths of an American missionary and her infant daughter who were killed when their single-engine plane was downed by the Peruvian air force. A U.S. surveillance plane was involved. The U.S. Embassy in Lima, Peru, said the surveillance plane had been monitoring Peru's aircraft, which mistook the missionaries for drug smugglers. Bush and administration officials refused to provide details about the U.S. plane's involvement in the incident, while the Pentagon would only say that it was not a military plane.
"The United States is certainly upset by the fact that two citizens lost their lives," Bush said at the Summit of the Americas in Quebec, a gathering of 34 Western Hemisphere nations, including Peru. Bush said he planned to discuss the incident with Peruvian Prime Minister Javier Perez de Cuellar on Saturday night. "I will wait to see all the facts before I reach any conclusions about blame," he said. State Department officials in Washington refused to comment. In Peru, a U.S. Embassy official, speaking on condition of anonymity, declined to say whether the U.S. aircraft provided the position of the single-engine floater plane. The official did say that U.S. tracking planes routinely pass along information to Peruvian authorities about suspicious aircraft in the northern jungle region bordering Colombia and Brazil, a common route for cocaine trafficking. Missionary Veronica "Ronnie" Bowers, 35, and her 7-month-old adopted daughter, Charity, were both killed and pilot Kevin Donaldson was wounded, said the Rev. E.C. Haskell, spokesman for the Association of Baptists for World Evangelism, whose U.S. base is in New Cumberland, Pa. Also on board and unhurt were Bowers' husband, Jim Bowers, 37, and their 6-year-old son Cory, said Haskell. The Bowers family is from Muskegon, Mich., and Donaldson from Morgantown, Pa., Haskell said. Hemp seed info...
I buy a small bottle ( 9.5 oz.)of Hempola brand hempseed oil from my local health food store and have been for 2.5 years now. The only way is cold pressed for eating, I think. It is a must that it be kept cold for it turns to linseed oil, which is unhealthy.Hemp seed oil has gamma linolenic acid, which is only available in like 5 places on the planet and is part of a strong immune system... It is in borage, black currant oil, primrose oil, & HEMP SEED OIL & MOTHERS MILK! HMMM!Nutrition of Hemp Seeds and Hemp Seed Oil: http://www.hempery.com/nutrition_article.html. Hempola: http://www.hempola.com/. I also have used Spectrum brand hemp seed oil.Does the government keep us from God given hemp seed oil and so we get cancer at the highest rate in the world, then when we get cancer, we are kept from using it for comfort from suffering.GLA = a strong immune system. Thank God for our blessings!

Ask and ye shall receive...
The name of the product is "Manitoba Harvest" Cold Pressed Hemp Seed Oil, it comes in 1000mg capsules, and you can get them from:http://www.hemperor.com/Also, if you know of a practicing acupuncturist or Chinese herbalist, they can prescribe things that should help with liver cleansing and health maintenance.I was an acupuncture patient for many years during the late '80's and early 90's and received a great deal of first rate care from these so-called 'alternative therapeutic practitioners'...who were well aware of my cannabis use, and didn't frown upon it. I never once suffered anything more than a slight case of light-headeness when one of them stuck me in the points labelled the "windows to Heaven' in the base of my skull.Whereas, in two very scary instances, I almost became a 'statistic' courtesy of anaphylactic reactions to supposedly safe muscle relaxants. Which was the primary reason behind my introduction to cannabis...the much (falsely!!!) maligned Devil's Weed was a Hell of a lot safer. How's that for irony?

Is there a link to the product you just mentioned? I am slowly reindroducing my husband to herbal medicine. I want to see what helps and he can't afford to make too many mistakes and take something that doesn't work or could cause more harm. If you aren't sure please don't feel you need to answer this. If you do I would like to know.

Hempseeds
I second GCW's advice on hemp-for-health; I suffer from a genetic condition which leads to hypercholesterolemia. My Lower Density Lipids are too high. Which means that early death by stroke or heart disease is a very real possibility for me. Since orally taking hemp-oil capsules (which I have to make long trips to Canada to get, thanks to the poepjegatten at ONDCP and their equally slimey counterparts at the FDA) and modifying my diet to include more vegetables, my LDLs level has dropped dramatically. Hempseeds and cold-pressed ("gotta be cold-pressed, chillun!") hempseed oil are about as good an all-natural anodyne ('good for what ails ya') as it gets.More proof that the antis are literally anti-LIFE; they seek to keep from people the very things they need to remain healthy in a world full of chemical and elctromagnetic pollution.

Good ways to combat while Jesus carries you!
Phaedrus, Since we have to fight w/o violence, I would like to reflect something that teaches what's right. Setting hemp seed oil on your dinner table shows guest where you stand! This has been a great oppertunity to break the ice, and I do not have to indicate I vaporize. (that is another one, by using a vaporizer your health may like it, + when the staunch speak of the smoke, you can point out, that that is a non issue!!!!&!)Start eating hemp seed oil in your salads! With oil and vinegar salads taste great + when guest are at your home they are shown the good example. You can now also buy hulled hemp seeds, which are good in cereal, oatmeal, salads, etc. Nutritiously they exceed most other food we consume! If it's good enough for God it's good enough for me! (To those whom stumble on page 1 of the Bible), If it's good enough for me and good enough for God, why is it not good enough for you?

Fury.
Like so many of us, we are forced to harbor a huge wellspring of volcanically-hot anger at what has been done to us, to our nation, to the future of our children...all in the name of protecting us.A 17 year old shepherd boy tending his flock - shot dead by a Marine Sniper team...to protect him.An 11 year old child, lying face down on the ground, spread-eagled as ordered by the 'nice policeman' during a drug raid which found no drugs - is shotgunned in the back by that same officer, and dies ...to protect him. In the few seconds of consciousness that he had left (unless it's a head shot, you rarely ever 'die instantly', folks; there's usually enough electrical activity going on that you realize just before the lights finally go out as to what's happening to you.) you can only imagine what went on in that little boy's mind. He probably had time enough to think just one or two thoughts, like: "Mommy!" and "WHY?"And now an infant and her adoptive mother, a women who was intent upon spreading the Gospel of Y'shua the Carpenter - are gunned down in the prime of life...to protect them.I call these goons 'antis' for a number of reasons: they are anti-freedom. Anti-rational. I could go on and on. But one thing they have proven themselves to be again and again is...anti-LIFE.And people with such murderous predilections have been entrusted with the power of life and death?Use your anger. Use your fury. Our pols couldn't care less what happens to a bunch of mud-hut dwellers along some s**t-mucked shoreline in Booga-Boogastan or whatever, but these were Americans. American Christians. (You remember the Religious Right, don't you, Mr. or Ms. Pol? They can make or break you...and this could really break you. Hint, hint, hint.) I'd strongly suggest that those of us of the Christian persuasion write your Congresscritters and your Senators and tell them that this is not how Christians act towards each other. And let them know that if they dare mutter or dissemble that 'we have to expect these kinds of accidents in war' that his nice cushy job could also end up a 'casualty' of the fortunes of the war he or she favors so much. Enough DrugWar!

Sorry didn't do it!
Phaedrus, You said that you go to church occasionally. I use to go firly regularily and I realized that that had to stop when after talking to the pastor, he said I was listening to the devil AND I was talking to the devil. BUT that was just the start, so I stopped going and I put and end to my kids going into that mans house. There is a difference between Jesus house and that guys house. One of the problems is that some of those that call themselves Christian are lost and have been brainwashed to the point that they are unaware of the stumbling on page 1 of the Bible. My fellow Christians literally are having trouble with what the Bible says on literally PAGE ONE! That is an issue that very few churches are willing to set their flock straight on, and so ARE they are leading their flock into lostness. The prohibition against cannabis IS AGAINST CHRIST! Think about it and it becomes apearant, every aspect of what it takes to cage a human for simply consuming cannbis is anti-Christian! One pleases God and one does not please God!Once this conclusion is illustrated, try praying and reading the Bible and through the promised Holy Spirit of Truth, you will see much light, like for instance just one example: Most of Isaiah is a representation of how cannabis has been present all through the Old Testiment. King James seems to have distorted much reference, but was unable to destroy all of it! It is there for those whom can get past page 1!As for your young child. That should be enough reason to fight this war on a personal level, for the war will devour your child w/ its disfunctionality. A society telling lies to your child is not going to have a positive effect what so ever! Notice that God and Jesus Christ gave us the promise of the Holy Spirit of TRUTH, not the HOly Spirit of lies!Be like Epaphroditus, (Phillipians 4:18 (+ -)The Green Collar Worker.

another citizen sick and tired of hiding...
...way to go Phaedrus!feels good to come out and say it, doesn't it?it is wonderful to see posts like yours.the only way to fight the stereotypes is for successful people to come forward, and point out that casual marijuana usehas not ruined their lives.i'm not sure if you are aware that NORML has made much the same point you do.one of the first paragraphs of their policy statement: "Marijuana smokers are no different from their nonsmoking peers, except for their marijuana use. Like most Americans, they are responsible citizens who work hard, raise families, contribute to their communities, and want a safe, crime-free neighborhood in which to live. They are not part of the crime problem and should not be treated like criminals."~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ "If anyone else has suggestions about what to do in one's everyday life to help make a change, I'd like to hear them."my suggestion would be to take this moving post you made...distill it down to a paragraph or two, and send it as a Letter To the Editor,to several places.many of the articles here have reply info.for a post here, longer is fine, but for a LTE, shorter is always better...try to boil it down to a sentence or two if you can.there are many reasons:an editor can only print a fraction of the letters s/he recieves,a shorter letter is more likely to be published;when someone with an opposing view reads your letter, they'll tune it out after a sentence or two anyways.oh, and if you have the finicial resources, (and it sounds like you do,)joining NORML for $25 a year couldn't hurt.another angle: many of these websites are run by volunteers:as a network engineer, you might be able todonate expertise and knowledgeas opposed to strictly money.~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~i know this kind of stuff seems like just a drop in the bucket sometimes...but if i'm a drop and your a drop and there are ten thousand other drops...what is a rainstorm but a whole bunch of drops of water?and as Phaedrus titles his coming out: it's time.it's time for the thunder.~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~"There is as much chance of repealing the 18th Amendment as there is for a hummingbird to fly to the planet Mars with the Washington Monument tied to its tail."------------Morris Sheppard, the congressman from Texas who co-sponsored the original legislation, in 1930.(alcohol prohibition ends: 1933)

Phaedrus Thank You
Phaedrus that was very nice. It's sad but very nice. Why oh why won't they see? I know that people must be aware of how wrong this all is but people have learned to close their minds to things that would require any amount of change in themselves. I have thought all along that as people's lives are touched by the drug war then they will see. More and more peoples lives are being wrecked by the drug war. I wouldn't want to do any drugs now for love or money. I've been there and done that but I made it through and I want others to make it through by not being busted for youthful indiscretions.

Phaedrus
Well said!,,,an excellent commentary....It's good to hear you speak out...I think more people are getting so disgusted by the sham of the drug war,and I hope they will not hesitate to speak out.I'm sure there are many thousands of people who are reluctantto speak up because of the negative image that the governmenthas conjured up.Pot smokers are labeled as "drug users",or"drugoffenders";this,,and the harsh nature of the police state, tendsto scare people into quiet submission. We are now starting to realize that we must fight for our freedom, and that's a sad thing to have to do,in our supposed 'democracy.May JAH shine on you and yours.........................dddd

It's Time
I'm the silent majority. I've been smoking for about 15 years now. I've been reading this page for over a year now (great job, FoM). I've commented maybe once or twice up to now. I suspect that I'm not the only silent digester of this information out there. I'm a network engineer, and I'm good at what I do. I'm fairly clean-cut as far as my hair, my choice of clothes. I go to church on occasion. Invariably, when people find out that cannabis is my drug of choice, they're surprised. I used to get a mild kick out of the surprise that registered on people's faces. I vote, and I pay taxes (to the tune of 39% of my gross income to the federal government for last year). I'm a damned participating citizen in this country and I'm sick and tired of concealing that marijuana is my drug of choice. We all know that the "antis" paint all of us the same: long hair, skateboard, loud car, that sort of thing. If that's you, more power to you; there's not a thing in the world wrong with expressing yourself the way you want to. But this is one of the ways that they try to marginalize us. How could anyone who looks like THAT ever amount to anything? And so I find myself wanting to tell people that the stereotype is wrong, that I'm also the face of the pot smoker, and that doesn't change any of the other things you've always thought about me. It makes me very angry that there are those out there who would dearly love to send my wife and I to prison for awhile because we enjoy sharing a joint together in the hot tub after the kids have gone to sleep. Well, screw the people who think that. There's something fundamentally flawed about people who think that way.I'm the father of a beautiful 10-month old baby girl. As anyone who's ever been the parent of a baby can tell you, there's a fierce sense of protectiveness for that baby that can rapidly give way to a sense of murderous rage in the right circumstances. I've been reading coverage of this plane shot down in Peru. I've superimposed my family into the situation. No, I'm not the missionary type, but you get the point that anyone could be in the wrong place at the wrong time and have their lives shattered by some gun-happy prohibition freak. If only we could say this was an isolated incident, we might be able to explain it away a little better. But all of you know better, from the stories collected on this page. It's time to STOP KILLING AND INCARCERATING our own citizens. It's time to take our country back. It's time to take DA's who want to make a name for themselves at others' expense and throw them out on the street. It's time to elect representatives who are truly that--representative of OUR wishes. That's what it's supposed to be about. It's time to send the rest of 'em packing. I've read about the federal grants and loans being denied for college students who have a "drug conviction". Brilliant idea, George W Dimwit! Let's take a whole group of intelligent people (they were in college or on their way) and cut their future off at the knees because the nice officer found a roach in their ashtray. Yes, let's take a whole group of intelligent people, ruin their future, make them feel alienated from the rest of society, and make sure they only get menial jobs and marginalized status in society. Then let's let them stew on it for a few years. Let's let them go down the road of hard knocks for awhile. Brilliant tactical planning, I have to say. Who was the philosopher that said "if you oppress the people for long enough, they will revolt"? Enough said.I've also been reading about the heir apparent to McCaffery's job. By the time this new guy is done, we may all be clamoring to give Barry McCaffery the Golden Pacifists Hemostat award, or whatever. The new guy sounds like a real barrel of fun. But I do agree with what someone else here wrote on the topic: that with the changing attitudes about MJ, maybe it's good we get a crackpot in there to expose the stupidity of the office and that way of thinking. Most everyone has a "drug of choice". You have to watch out for the ones that aren't herbal or chemical. Some of those other drugs of choice include power, degradation of others, intimidation, satisfaction through violence, and so on. Of all the drugs of choice I could be taking, I think I ended up with one of the most benign and beneficial. And again, I'm really tired of apologizing for it or hiding it. What can I do about all of this? Well, I think I can do lots of small stuff every day. I've started to email articles I find here to friends and relatives. I don't ask them to become legalization advocates, I merely ask them to look at what our government is doing to its own citizenry every day. If anyone else has suggestions about what to do in one's everyday life to help make a change, I'd like to hear them. I'm tired of being quiet. And you know the ironic part? They could have kept me as quiet as a church mouse all the years of my life, quietly smoking in my little corner. But they keep pushing, and pushing, and killing, and arresting, and reverting to policy of 10 years ago, and villifying all of us. Enough is enough. I'm a good person, and a "productive member of society", and I'm a mild-mannered guy who is finally pissed. Thank you.
