San Mateo County will be the first local government in the nation to prescribe marijuana when it begins doling out medicinal pot to dozens of AIDS patients later this month. Researchers yesterday began recruiting the first 60 people to take part in the two-year, outpatient study of marijuana's medical benefits. Dr. Dennis Israelski, chief of infectious diseases and AIDS medicine at San Mateo County Center, is the study's principal researcher. He said scientists could have people smoking marijuana within weeks.
A team of researchers hope to find out, among other things, whether the drug relieves pain and promotes appetite, benefits long touted by proponents of marijuana for medicinal purposes. Anyone wanting to participate must be at least 18, infected with HIV, on anti-retroviral therapy and suffering from neurological problems, among many other requirements. People with schizophrenic, bipolar and other disorders, or a history of alcoholism or drug addiction, are not eligible. Likewise, anyone found to have traces of other drugs in their system within six weeks prior to enrolling in the study will be disqualified. Israelski said that those who met the strict criteria would be closely monitored, required to keep a log of their marijuana use and turn in butts, called roaches, during scheduled doctor visits. County health officials also periodically will make at-home visits. Local health officials proposed the study after the 1996 passage of Proposition 215, the medical marijuana initiative. The federal Drug Enforcement Administration agreed in November to provide government-grown marijuana to 60 patients. To enroll or for more information, phone Mark Traves, clinical research coordinator, at (650) 573-2748. AP Corrects Medical Marijuana Story
Story Filed: Thursday, April 05, 2001 7:12 AM EDT SAN MATEO, Calif. (AP) -- In an April 3 story on the first medical marijuana study approved by the federal government, The Associated Press erroneously reported the source of the marijuana used in the study. The marijuana was provided by the federal government from stocks grown at federally monitored marijuana farms. It was not confiscated by law enforcement. Copyright © 2001 Associated Press

amazing
It's a good thing how they are apparently going aheadwith this. It's kinda like givin' the feds the bird,,,whichthey deserve....indeed.The criteria/requirements to participate in the study arequite rigid..This will give the results undeniable credibility, that the federal overlords will find extremely akward to refute. The most absurd, and infuriating part of this type study,is thatit could have been done long ago with federal funding,(it probablyhas, but the results were hushed/classified.)....There wont be ahell of alot Barry,Joyce,Jim,and the cult of prohibitionist will beable to do,or say to this clinically strict study.......dddd

Aids Patients To Be Given Confiscated Marijuana for Study Source: AnanovaPublished: April 4, 2001Copyright: 2001 Ananova Ltd Website: http://www.ananova.com/Aids patients are taking part in a Californian study to see if marijuana can effectively control their pain. The Government has authorised marijuana confiscated by police to be sent to San Mateo County Health Centre for a 12-week study.Sixty patients will be given 15 reefers over a set time and will detail their drug use in a log.Doctor Dennis Israelski, head of infectious diseases and Aids medicine at the centre, says all the patients have pain in their limbs and have already used the drug.Supporters of the study hope it will determine whether marijuana relieves pain and stimulates appetite as many users claim. In 1996 voters in California passed a law which allows possession, cultivation and use of marijuana for medicinal purposes. However, it is difficult to implement the amendment as federal law says it is illegal to distribute the drug.
