With the Supreme Court considering the medical marijuana issue, the White House is conflicted. President Bush supports both strong federal criminalization of the drug, and the right of states to legalize it.As the Supreme Court considers whether to legalize marijuana, President Bush appears to be of two minds on the issue. He's against it, yet during the campaign he acknowledged he supports a state's right to decide the legality for its citizens.
"I believe each state can choose that decision as they so choose," Bush said in the fall of 1999.At the time, marijuana supporters praised Bush.White House spokesman Ari Fleischer confirmed today that the president's position has not changed."The president is opposed to the legalization of marijuana, including for medicinal purposes, and he strongly supports the current federal law that's in place," Fleischer said today.Marijuana is listed as a Schedule 1 narcotic under the federal Controlled Substances Act. According to the DEA, "Schedule 1 is reserved for the most dangerous drugs that have no recognized medical use."States' Rights Issue: But while the president supports the federal law that's in place, Fleischer said, he also thinks states should have the right to make the drug legal."The president's position is always on state referenda on things like that. That is a process question where the states have the right to follow their own processes," Fleischer told reporters at the White House. "But, as the president said, and as you know - it was discussed by campaign spokespeople with you directly during the campaign - the president opposes it; he supports federal law."The Office of National Drug Control Policy considers marijuana the "most prevalent illegal drug in the United States."ABCNews' Ann Compton and Brian Hartman contributed to this report. my thought
I think the president is scared of doing some actual good for this country. Those who support the legalization can see all the aspects of what good would come from legalizing the herb. The Government legalizing Marijuana would lower crime rates by more then 50%. There are so many uses of the fine herb that could bring any country faceing finacial troubles out of debt. I think the Presitdent used the fact of backing state control on this to get votes because he had no chance otherwise. I say WAKE UP!!!!!! LEGALIZE AND BE WISE!!!!!!!

legalize it
Just legalize it. Like more than half the U.S population smokes weed. I mean every one and their mom. All its doing is making tax payers pay more for the war on drugs and they are still losing. DEA and the ATF who needs those. U should be able to buy it in vending machines and every where else. It is already that easy to get. Plus weed is good.

i don't think that it has been proven that smoking cannabis and only cannabis will bring negative permanent consequences to your lungs. the issue is that when considering lung damage, the fact that some people that smoke cannabis also smoke cigarettes is not taken into consideration. does anyone know if smoking cannabis alone is proven to lead to a serious lung condition?

rightttttt.....
Controlled substance act is bullshit.....i would like to hear the argument that marijuana is a dangouse drug ... and what they mean by dangerous.... cause i know that yes if you smoke alot of pot eventally you are going to become ill and suffer lung damage. But doesnt that apply to tobacco ... i mean 1 drop of pure nicotine will kill any one.. a drop of pure thc will just make u really stoned... so where is the danger? where is the threat... what is the fear of pot? i dont understand why people think its bad. I know that i have asked afew people what they think and the answer i comonly get is that its the gateway drug .... research has shown that alcohol is the gateway drug... If you look at the methods that other countries use in their approach to alcohol, they allow their kids to drink small amounts at certin times and in the presance of adults, the result is that the mystry is gone and kids are less likely to go and take their parents alcohol and try it by them selfs... same theory for handguns raise kids around them ... less danger.. people need to wake the fuck up and think for them self insted of relyin on the government.peace outsuperstoner

From the Holy Spirit of Truth!
With cannabis you don’t need leaders. The 2%ers know full well that an end to the cannabis prohibition hampers them from every single direction. While the 90% today in the polls show the non-oppressive understanding, there will not be allowed the option of cannabis for it divides their wealth, which is nonconforming to their desire of greed. When we look at all plant implications, we see that there is what we do not know. What we do know is enlightening enough to help become aware of what we did not know. Example: We know our understanding of our relationship w/plants under the context of taste and eat: that is we know what is best to taste and eating and that includes what is the worst, what will kill you if you eat it. We know our understanding of our relationship w/plants under the context of touch and its implications including what plants we touch that heal, and heal best along with what plants irritate us and cause rash implicating wicked. What about the plant for smell implications? We are told by God and we know from the Holy Spirit of Truth that the smell implication of cannabis / kaneh bosm, is amongst good and Love. We know that you can not smell too much where other plants that we know are good to smell do not allow the full spectrum of smell to be had because they are not the best smells and may be one of the smells that kill. Cannabis is the Greatest smell our Lord gave us. Cannabis is the greatest taste and food given us. Cannabis is the greatest thing that you touch to your body. Cannabis likewise will show true to other similar applications. So are you of the crowd that consists of the 2% that represents greed. Greed is the mark of wicked evil. Truth is the mark of the God Awesome!
