What do you think of the medical use of marijuana? Should Ohio permit its limited use, or continue to maintain its status as illegal for any purpose?
On Wednesday, the Institute of Medicine issued a report that bolsters arguments for the medicinal use of marijuana. It said the active ingredients in pot, called cannabanoids, can be more effective at relieving pain and nausea associated with cancer treatment than many other drugs and that marijuana can help stimulate the appetites of patients suffering from AIDS. It also said marijuana does not lead to the use of harder drugs such as heroin or cocaine. The only problem, said the institute report, is that the positive effects of marijuana can be offset by the negative effects associated with smoking it. Research is continuing at isolating the active ingredients in marijuana and finding a safer yet effective way of delivering them, perhaps through an inhaler. The Ohio legislature in its last session revoked a provision in Ohio drug law that would have offered a doctor's testimony as a positive defense in marijuana cases. Seven states now have passed laws permitting the medical use of marijuana. Still, the federal government opposes any relaxation of drug laws. What do you think of the medical use of marijuana?
