Medical-Marijuana Bill Goes To Senate

Gov. Gary Johnson's proposal to legalize the medical use of marijuana is heading to the Senate for consideration. The Senate Judiciary Committee endorsed the measure on a 6-3 vote late Wednesday night. "What we're talking about is trying to help people who are quite ill," said Sen. Roman Maes, D-Santa Fe, who sponsored the proposal.
Patients with debilitating medical conditions - cancer, AIDS or glaucoma, for example - could be eligible for the program. Health Secretary Alex Valdez said the department would approve patients for the use of medical marijuana - "cannabis," as it's called in the legislation. A physician must first certify the patient as having a medical condition that qualifies for the program. The department would decide where to obtain the marijuana, how much a patient could legally possess and how it would be distributed to patients. However, Valdez said, it would not be legal for patients to grow their own marijuana, as allowed in some other states with medical-marijuana laws. It's possible, Valdez said, the state might have a university - such as New Mexico State University - or a private company supply the drug. The committee chairman, Sen. Michael Sanchez, D-Belen, voted against the proposal and said the legislation left the department to make too many key decisions in designing the program. For example, Sanchez questioned how the department would deal with a New Mexico resident participating in the program who moves out of the state but maintains his or her legal residence in New Mexico. Valdez said those matters would be spelled out in rules and regulations developed by the department. The bill called for an advisory board of medical professionals to help guide the department on requirements and procedures for the program. The committee agreed to revise the provision to require the advisory board be made up of nine physicians recommended to the department by the New Mexico Medical Society. The nominees would be subject to confirmation by the Senate.Source: Santa Fe New Mexican (NM)Author: Barry Massey, The Associated Press Published: March 1, 2001Copyright: 2001 The Santa Fe New MexicanAddress: 202 E Marcy, Santa Fe, N.M. 87501Fax: (505) 986-3040Contact: letters sfnewmexican.comWebsite: http://www.sfnewmexican.com/Related Articles:Committees Pass Medical Marijuana Billhttp://cannabisnews.com/news/thread8754.shtmlMarijuana Bill Clears Two Committeeshttp://cannabisnews.com/news/thread8744.shtmlCommittee Endorses Medical Marijuana Bill http://cannabisnews.com/news/thread8742.shtml

News Brief
Poll Shows Support for Medical MarijuanaSource: Associated Press Published: February 25, 2001Copyright: 2001 Associated PressNearly four in five New Mexicans support Gov. Gary Johnson's proposal to legalize the medical use of marijuana, according to a poll released Saturday by a group backing drug-law changes. The poll was commissioned by the Lindesmith Center-Drug Policy Foundation, a research group that support Johnson's efforts to change drug laws. The poll found that 78 percent of those surveyed either strongly supported or somewhat supported the use of marijuana for medical purposes for seriously ill or terminal patients, such as those suffering from cancer or AIDS. Sixteen percent were opposed. The poll also showed that strong majority - 65 percent - supported making the possession of less than one ounce of marijuana a civil offense, punishable like a speeding ticket.

Sheep's wool
Health Secretary Alex Valdez said the department would approve patients for the use of medical marijuana - "cannabis," as it's called in the legislation. That's too funny. As i recall, before cannabis met the dread year of 1937, it was known as cannabis and not MJ. MJ is a slang term that that bastard anslinger cooked up to muddy the issue as he ramrodded it through congress. It was really easy to rail against marijuana, especially since everyone knew the beneficial plant they were hoodwinked against as cannabis. As an aside, FoM, your bookmark in my browser is one of my two daily smiles, on-line. The other is deja.com. You have a beautiful site that is very user-friendly, the people that frequent here are incredible (intellect and humor) and the very fact that you post all this information day after day after day is awe-inspiring to me. You kick much ass. Kudos. ;)

Hemp is GRRRRRRRRRR 8!!!!
I love Cannabisnews.com too! Just so you're more aware of the Respect that you deserve. I know you're not a dumb pot-head, like ABC & NBC & CNN would like to have Humans think! You run a website better and more concise than ANY anti-paht that I've ever run into! That Anti-Train-Of-Thought is going to get these Idological Zealots in a mess! Worse off, ya gotta feel bad for whoever their kids are! I would despise the fact of having parents that only want me to watch PG movies, listen to N'Sync and Love Lying and Liars. What a Drag to know that some of these kids have to live with these People-Hating Machine-Like MORONS! What kind of Braindamage? What kind of Life, must that be like? Oh well, I'm glad that i had parents that smoked Herbs (kept them well hidden, too!) and had quit the Alc. when I was young, for this- they have left me with a low-care for Alc. and a Strongly-built-foundation for the Love of Cannabis! And the culture that derives therefrom! i.e.: Cannabisnews.com AND---->N.O.R.M.L.....(I hope that I'm the new designer of their T-Shirts and Props.! I sent in my 4 entries, now, PLEASE GRANT ME THE HIGHEST LUCK IN CANNAKINGDOM!)...and, many, many more Organizations,Groups, Fund-Raising Orgs. Entertainers, and Indie-Media Types (High Times, Cannabis Culture, Grass Roots:by Albert Goldman (70's book),The Connoisseurs Handbook of Marijuana, Cannabis Culture:by Patrick Matthews (90's-era)....the list goes on and on. Most of you may know, but for those unaware, The Cannabis Culture is GROWING. Like the plant itself. At a Beautiful and Impressive rate, too! P.S. I cannot wait for the "CannaCar" (my own nickname) to debut!!!! Tis gonna be Dank Nastie!! http://www.hempcar.org P.S.S. I am sooo thankful that Cannabisnews.com exists! Thank you for all that made it pots-i-ble...oops, misspell?
