WASHINGTON Rep. Tammy Baldwin said a report's finding that marijuana has medical benefits for people suffering from the effects of cancer and AIDS could be a step in the right direction.
"This an area where I think it's so important that doctors and scientists make the decisions rather than politicians at the federal level," the Madison Democrat said. "If scientists and physicians believe that a drug can be used to alleviate pain and suffering, then I believe they should be able to prescribe it." A report released by the Institute of Medicine said marijuana has been effective in treating pain and nausea. While in the Wisconsin State Assembly, Baldwin introduced legislation that would have legalized the use of marijuana for patients under the care of a doctor. Although she never succeeded in getting the legislation passed, Baldwin said she thinks the tide may be turning in regards to the medical use of marijuana. She said she is encouraged by the passage of ballot initiatives in five states allowing the use of medical marijuana, although the drug remain illegal under federal law. "The citizens are speaking out, people want to take their health care back," Baldwin said. "Perhaps politicians will be listening."
