California Attorney General Bill Lockyer reacted with guarded optimism to a new report by the Institute of Medicine which cited certain benefits related to the medical uses of marijuana.
The report, "Marijuana and Medicine: Assessing the Science Base," found that marijuana probably helps a number of medical conditions, but smoking the plant can be hazardous. The report suggested research into other methods of delivering the drug's active ingredients to patients. "The report suggests that there is scientific evidence to support its use and encourages further research," Lockyer said yesterday. In 1996, California voters approved Proposition 215 to allow the use of marijuana for medical purposes. Lockyer has convened a task force to develop a system to offer patients access to the drug. Medical marijuana distribution clubs were shut down in Northern California by federal prosecutors, but such clubs continue to operate in Santa Cruz and Los Angeles. The report was released yesterday by the Institute of Medicine, which is operated by the National Academy of Sciences. http://www.sfgate.com/cgi-bin/cgiwrap/cnews/article.cgi?file=/news/archive/1999/03/18/roundup1.DTL
