Supporters Say The Bill Will Be Back
MINNEAPOLIS, A bill that would have allowed patients in Minnesota to smoke marijuana for medical reasons was snuffed out Wednesday by its own supporters, reports WCCO-TV.
The decision to drop the bill was made today despite the release of a federal report endorsing the use of marijuana for medical purposes. Supporters of the bill say though it's gone for now, it's not out. "It is not dead, but we will continue working after this session," said Sen Pat Piper, DFL-Austin. Supporters of the limited medical use of marijuana admit the conflict with federal law is why they backed down. "Even if we said okay in Minnesota, the federal government considers it criminal conduct," said State Public Safety Commissioner Charlie Weaver. It's a curious move because the decision to drop the bill came the same day a government sponsored report called marijuana a positive medical tool. (Full Story). Still, some doctors remain skeptical. "I have trouble with using something that's not regulated," said Dr. Ed Greeno of the University of Minnesota." Greeno says he knows many of his cancer patients will continue to use marijuana to fight the pain, and admits he's not about to stop them. "Some of my patients tell me they just feel better using it," said Greeno. Wednesday night's reversal means the medical marijuana issue cannot be re-introduced for one year, reports the television station. Seven states now have laws like this on the books, and sponsors hope with Gov. Ventura's continued support they'll have a better shot next session. http://www.wcco.com/news/stories/news-990317-214126.html
