Hemp Researcher Testifies

Testimony at Sonoma County's first medical marijuana trial today centered on how much marijuana the defendant's garden would yield, as a witness testified it was not a sophisticated operation. Chris Conrad, a hemp researcher, cannabis expert and head of the Business Alliance for Commerce in Hemp, testified the 109 plants confiscated from defendant Alan MacFarlane in May and August 1999 would have yielded no more than 6 or 7 pounds of processed dry marijuana.
Sonoma County narcotics agents estimated that the 59 outdoor plants confiscated in May alone would have yielded 30 to 60 pounds of usable marijuana.``Impossible,'' Conrad countered today. He said his estimate is based on two federal studies regarding prospective yields and on his experience harvesting marijuana in Europe. He said MacFarlane's garden at his west Santa Rosa home was not a sophisticated growing operation. The county district attorney's office claims MacFarlane, 47, was growing far more marijuana than necessary to treat pain and nausea following his surgery for thyroid cancer. Sonoma County, among others, does not specify how much marijuana may be grown for medical purposes under state Proposition 215 approved in 1996, but treats each alleged offense on a case-by-case basis. The trial has attracted upwards of 30 people a day from around the Bay Area to Superior Court Judge Robert Boyd's courtroom in Santa Rosa. But Deputy District Attorney Carla Claeys disputed Conrad's yield estimates, claiming they were based only on plants growing outdoors. MacFarlane also had an indoor growing operation capable of three harvests a year yielding 27 pounds annually, Claeys said. Conrad told defense attorney Sandy Feinland that the federal government supplies medical marijuana patients between 6 and 12 pounds of marijuana a year and ships 300 joints in canisters to them each month.Patients often develop a tolerance to marijuana and may need increased dosages to remain pain free, Conrad added. A member of the Family Council and Drug Awareness organization, he said the lethal level of marijuana is far less than that of aspirin. Lethal Level of Marijuana
Pardon my language, but this claim that marijuana's "lethal level" is far less than that of aspirin is absolute bull$#it. A flat-out lie. Aspirin actually kills about 2,000 people annually ("Basic Facts About the Drug War," Clifford A Schaffer). Marijuana never has and never will:Because marijuana does not profoundly alter cardiovascular and respiratory functions, no does of marijuana is fatal to humans. from Marijuana Myths, Marijuana Facts, by Lynn Zimmer, Ph.D. and John P. Morgan, M.D.More proof that the antis will tell flagrant lies to get their way. Dan B

"Patients often develop a tolerance to marijuana and may need increased dosages to remain pain free, Conrad added. A member of the Family Council and Drug Awareness organization, he said the lethal level of marijuana is far less than that of aspirin."Does this make sense ??? Either he's mis-quoted or the DA said this.
