This year, the Texas House of Representatives will finally consider legislation about medical marijuana. A bill has been introduced, HB 513, which will allow patients arrested for medical marijuana to plead their case in court. Please visit the Take Action portion of this Web site to send a pre-written letter to your state legislators, urging them to support HB 513. If you wish, you may add to the letter, encouraging your legislators to protect patients from arrest in the first place.
Your legislators will only change Texas’ harmful marijuana laws if they hear from you. We hope you will use this new Web site to let them hear from you quite often. Thank you, and please encourage others to Take Action to make their voices heard on this important issue.Encourage your state legislators to sign national coalition letterCurrently, federal law confers a one-year prison sentence for possessing a small amount of marijuana for any reason -- and no exception is made for medical use. Seriously ill people should not be subject to arrest and imprisonment for using medical marijuana with their doctors' approval. To help end this unjust policy, the ad hoc Coalition for Compassionate Access will be pressuring the Bush administration to allow patients to apply to the federal governments for special permission to use marijuana to treat their symptoms. The growing coalition is composed of dozens of health and medical organizations, celebrities, and state legislators. Please see http://www.compassionateaccess.org/ for more information. Please use the Take Action link on this site to encourage your state legislators to sign the coalition's letter to President-elect Bush. As more citizens encourage their elected officials to sign on, Bush and his advisors will feel increased pressure to show meaningful compassion to medical marijuana users.http://www.mpp.org/states/site/select.cgi?state=TX&type=action&key=It is important to act now, so that the federal government's historic mistreatment of patients does not continue into the new presidential administration. Please use the Take Action link to choose a letter that will be automatically sent to your state legislators, urging them to add their names to the sign-on letter to Bush.Feedback: http://www.mpp.org/states/site/simple.cgi?state=TX&type=feedback&key=1Updated: January 19, 2001 Texas NORMLhttp://www.normltexas.org/Details on HB513, Texas Medical Marijuana Bill http://www.normltexas.org/HB513.htmSponsors of the Medical Marijuana Bill in Texashttp://www.mpp.org/TX CannabisNews Medical Marijuana Archiveshttp://www.cannabisnews.com/news/list/medical.shtml

Vote.com - Current Poll!
Should The State Legalize Marijuana For Medical Use?Pros:Many users who are on legal drugs, such as morphine, feel better when they smoke marijuana. The FDA has approved the use of Marinol, a drug made with THC, but people do not feel the same results as they do smoking it. Let them smoke. Cons:This would make it harder for law enforcement to prosecute illegal marijuana trafficking. That takes taxpayer dollars. Smoking marijuana is more harmful to the lungs than cigarettes. It's not sensible to treat a disease with a known killer. Current: Yes (4,615) (52%) No (4,277) (48%) http://www.vote.com/vote/27351036/index.phtml?cat=10883144

Your Welcome Dan
I hope this year brings more awareness to legalization of marijuana or decriminalization not just medical marijuana. I'm not demeaning medical marijuana because that is very important but I want to see this year change marijuana laws. I am concerned about all drug laws but the legalization of marijuana needs serious attention. Bush said it should be up to the states as far as medical marijuana goes. LEGALIZE marijuana
As we all know from ads across America, is that tobacco kills more people than anything. Marijuana surely doesnt but its still illegal and tobacco is legal. Legalizing Marijuana could be a big part of ending the drug war. If people like Harry Brown are trying to stop the drug war and give America what they want by legalizing Marijuana, I and millions of people in the U.S.A should all join together and send a message to dicks that make it illegal.

Thanks for Posting This, FoM.
The fact that this bill was introduced is a major accomplishment for this state. I hope that it is seriously debated because I believe that is the only way it will be passed. I have contacted my representatives, and I encourage all Texans to do the same. There are several pre-written letters to choose from at the Marijuana Policy Project site (see the link at the end of the above article), and there is an automatic mechanism for sending such letters via e-mail.
