Pro-pot ads banned in Boston and put up in Washington only after threats by First Amendment lawyers may be coming to a subway or bus stop near you — assuming Mayor Giuliani doesn't snuff them out.The marijuana advocacy group Change the Climate launched its controversial ad campaign last week in the nation's capital. The ads don't encourage people to smoke and its use as a medicine.
One ad features a picture of a well-dressed businesswoman quoted saying, "I've got three great kids. I love them more than anything. I don't want them to smoke pot. But I know jail is a lot more dangerous than smoking pot."Just how high the Giuliani administration will be on the ads remains to be seen. City Hall had no immediate response."I'm not sure what to expect," said Joseph White of Change the Climate, which plans to buy ad space here. "From what little I know of the mayor's reputation, it wouldn't surprise me if he opposed our public information campaign."Metropolitan Transportation Authority spokesman Tom Kelly said any pro-pot ad would need to be reviewed by attorneys."There are all different forms of measuring sticks, depending on the ad," he said. "But we do not promote illegal activities."Massachusetts Gov. Paul Cellucci rejected the ads for Boston, saying they promote drug use. The matter is now in the courts.Washington's Metro subway line accepted the ads only after the American Civil Liberties Union threatened a lawsuit.Source: New York Daily News (NY)Author: Peter DeMarco, Daily News ExpressPublished: January 11, 2001 Address: 450 W. 33rd St., New York, N.Y. 10001 Copyright: 2001 Daily News, L.P. I can't wait to hear what happens in NYC.
Last night, Mayor Guiliani was on Conan O'Brien, and when marijuana was mentioned a bunch of the people in the audience started cheering. Of course, the band constantly has jokes about pot directed at them (and they dig it as well as Kevin Eubanks of Leno's show). Anyway, the point to which I was trying to get was that it will be great to hear Mayor Giuliani oppose the ads because any publicity is good publicity, not to mention if a First Amendment lawsuit is filed, it would be even more noticeable! Plus, the review of Rockefeller laws at the same time is bonus! People are going to have to start listening/thinking. Things are starting to happen, my friends.Nifty...

Anti-Prison Is Not ``Pro-Pot''
Pro-pot ads ... marijuana advocacy group ... promote illegal activities ... any pro-pot ad ... saying they promote drug useChangetheclimate is advertising against prison, they're not "pro-pot", etc., as prohibitionists are fond of lying.Oh let's see, what prohibitionist propaganda themes http://www.druglibrary.org/schaffer/History/ticp.html do we find in this piece?7. Policy options are presented as total prohibition or total access.8. Anyone questioning any of the above assumptions is bitterly attacked and characterized as part of the problem that needs to be eliminated. It is not possible (in the eyes of prohibitionist propaganda) to merely argue that people should not be locked up for using cannabis. Any deviation from the party line, i.e., questioning the jailing of cannabis users, is then pretended to be "pro-pot". This is then painted as total access ("You want kids smoking pot, eh? Crack sold in kindergarden?"). Sample changetheclimate ads may be seen here:http://www.changetheclimate.org/ads/
