Gurnee police say there was a fivefold increase this year in the number of Six Flags Great America visitors who wanted to get high on something other than a tall roller coaster.Visitors had to pass through metal detectors before entering the park for the second consecutive season. Park officials said they placed the detectors at the main gate in an attempt to prevent patrons from slipping in with weapons.
As it happens, security workers have wound up finding guests with marijuana on them after a metal detector is tripped by a large belt buckle, for example. Such guests are turned over to a Gurnee police officer stationed near the front entrance.Figures released by Gurnee police this week show 340 warning tickets and 30 arrests were made for patrons accused of possessing marijuana from April 15 through Oct. 29.Last year, front-gate warnings and arrests totaled 77. That means this season's 370 tickets and arrests for marijuana possession are roughly five times the number from 1999.Police Cmdr. Jay Patrick said there were only four arrests for illegal possession of harder drugs, such as cocaine. He said he was surprised by the dramatic increase in marijuana arrests."I don't know if it's just more people being careless about bringing it into the park," Patrick said.Six Flags spokesman Scott Kirn said the increased number of busts was good for the park, because it prevented undesirable guests from entering."Obviously, it's a positive," Kirn said Thursday. "We have a family atmosphere here. We work very hard at it."Under the park's policy, anyone caught trying to bring a weapon or illegal drugs onto the premises is automatically ejected and subject to arrest. Guests must pay admission before they go through the metal detectors.Patrick said warnings generally are issued to someone who has only a marijuana cigarette. He said an arrest likely would be made if the visitor previously had been warned about marijuana possession or was found with a package of it."The whole idea is to make it a family theme park," Patrick said.Complete Title: Number of Marijuana Arrests Made at Great America Entrance On The Rise Source: Daily Herald (IL)Author: Bob Susnjara, Daily HeraldPublished: Friday November 17, 2000Copyright: 2000 The Daily Herald CompanyContact: fencepost dailyherald.comWebsite: http://www.dailyherald.com/CannabisNews Archives - Cannabishttp://cannabisnews.com/news/list/cannabis.shtml

Legalize it
If Six Flags would just realize the money it could earn by selling legal cannabis! They sell beer, don't they? I'll never understand why they don't realize the vast smoking market out there, at amusement parks, sporting events, concerts... everybody who wants to get high bad enough to pay for it is going to anyway, so why can't the venue charge an outrageous markup on a doobie and let patrons smoke it without fear of arrest? I'd pay!

Where it all began
I don't know what this has to do with cannabis, but I believe Six Flags, as the name implies, began in Texas. Texas has had the flags of Six sovereign nations fly over it. Hence the name Six Flags. However, this story specifically refers to Six Flags Great America located in Gurnee, IL.

Good Idea
Sounds like a good idea -- getting high before going higher. But watch out, this is Amerika, land of the free. ha ha

Illinois
Six Flags Great America is located in Gurnee, Illinois. About an hour north of Chicago, up near the Wisconsin border.

Hi ex-pat
What country are you in now? :)Your idea of gettin rid of smell is pretty cool. However, we should not have to hide. We just should go right ahead and smoke the joints! If more of us do that, pretty soon, the others will realize it is time to legalize the cannabis.\/

How to beat them
The solution is clear, eliminate all metal from your person and carry a one hitter wooden pipe with essentials.OK, now the cool part for totally eliminating incriminating odors. THIS ABSOLUTELY WORKS! Stuff a 35mm plastic film canister with holes poked in the bottom with a new Bounce Dryer Sheet. Go into the bathroom, close the stall, do a toke through the wooden pipe, and exhale through the film can top with the dryer sheet inside. Absolutely kills the smell. Flush and go on your favorite ride, have fun and leave the minimum wage guards scrathcing their ass.
