A suburban Chicago couple's experience with their sport utility vehicle might add a new chapter to the used-car buyers' guide. The couple took the Ford Expedition they had purchased just days before to the shop this month because the windows would go only halfway down. The problem was not the mechanism: It was the marijuana stuffed inside the doors.
Mechanics found a two-pound bag in the passenger-side door and called police. Then they started peeling back the plastic side panels and foam seats to reveal well-wrapped bundles of dope.By the time the couple returned to pick up their vehicle, investigators had found more than 49 pounds of marijuana. Police estimated the value of the stash at $25,000.``The poor guy was in shock,'' said Joe Renello, service director at Joe Cotton Ford . ``He and his wife were pretty emotional about it. They were the victims.''The couple bought the 1999 Expedition Oct. 28 from a Hertz lot in Naperville. Officials said they conducted a 72-point check before selling it.``All I can say is that it wasn't discovered,'' said Lauren Garvey, a Hertz spokeswoman. ``The customers purchased the vehicle, so it wasn't noticed by them either.''
