I am utterly astounded at the drivel and outright fabrications that those opposed to cannabis use have been spreading lately. In regards to the letter "Pot more dangerous than ever" by Tony Hawk (Oct. 27): As to the THC content: Where did this information come from? The average THC concentration in Alaska cannabis is 9.5 percent, and the highest recorded in the nation (33 percent) was found in Oregon! Didn't he read the ADN's (well-written) two-parter on Proposition 5 a few weeks ago?
THC isn't stored in fat cells; its metabolites are. In any case, can he point me to any scientific evidence that states that this matters? "Marijuana is responsible for much death and destruction." When? Where? Again I challenge him to point me to a single incident. And as to users going to great length to get their substance of choice, you can't imagine the effort people will put forth to get alcohol. I've worked in a grocery store for four years; you'd be amazed at the things I've seen. If cannabis is really so dangerous, why can't its opponents turn people off to its use by stating the facts? Why must they resort to lies? -- Brian Myers Chugiak Don't Get Distracted On Prop. 5: Certain provisions of Proposition 5, 99HEMP, are causing much angst and wringing of hands. Of particular concern are those provisions calling for amnesty, discussion of restitution and an 18-year age of consent. Please consider the following: Proposition 5 is a citizen initiative. Under Alaska law, once the voters pass an initiative the Legislature has about three months to amend it before it becomes law. The Legislature can and will eliminate many of the more progressive and controversial measures. If you're concerned this law goes too far, don't be. By the time the Legislature gets done with it, the actual law will probably not go far enough. Just check out what happened to 97PSDM, the 1998 initiative allowing the medical use of marijuana. Although it passed with more than 58 percent of the vote, the law that went into effect was barely recognizable. The vocal opponents of Proposition 5 would like you to believe that an initiative, once passed, becomes law. Scare campaigns focus on details that will not exist in the final law. Please don't be distracted. The central issue is this: If you live in Alaska, someone you love is a responsible user of marijuana. Do you believe that he or she should go to jail for that choice? If the answer is no, please vote yes on 5. -- Jolene Brown Anchorage Letters To The Editor: Anchorage Daily Newshttp://www.adn.com/letters/0,2654,,00.htmlSource: Anchorage Daily News (AK)Published: October 31, 2000Copyright: 2000 The Anchorage Daily News Contact: letters adn.com Website: http://www.adn.com/ Related Articles & Web Sites:Free Hemp in AlaskaAl Anders, Chair2603 Spenard RoadAnchorage, Alaska 99503 (907) 278-HEMP E-mail: freehempinak gci.netVisit their web site: http://www.freehempinak.orgHemp 2000R.L.
