Bunker Going To Pot?

A proposed federal dope factory in an abandoned Cold War bunker should be given a fair shake by Ottawa before the bulldozers move in, says Canadian Alliance Leader Stockwell Day. Loren Wiberg, an Innisfail computer consultant, has a battle plan for John Diefenbaker's central Alberta nuclear-proof bunker. It's one the stern Canadian leader could have never envisioned: growing marijuana for medicinal purposes.
Wiberg's idea has been panned by federal officials, who say the "Diefenbunker" near Penhold will be plowed under to make way for farm crops. Wiberg bounced his idea off Day yesterday in Red Deer. "I'm not getting very high on the issue myself," Day quipped. "But I don't want to see his proposal be ignored and go to pot." Last June, Wiberg answered a call for proposals from the federal government to provide medicinal marijuana - 1,865 kg to be exact - to Health Canada over a five-year period. In September he got a message back saying growing pot in the bunker wasn't a good idea and that the Cold War relic was scheduled to be demolished. Wiberg wants the bunker because of the security it offers against theft, noting the cash crop of dope could be attractive to organized crime. Day thinks the federal government should be a little more open to the idea. "He deserves fair treatment," Day said, adding the Canadian Alliance does not have a formal position on medicinal marijuana, although he thinks it should be allowed with a doctor's permission. Wiberg, meanwhile, will continue to lobby the government. "Hey, listen, if anyone would have told me that at 40 I'd be looking to growing pot for the government in a Diefenbunker, well, I would say they're crazy," said Wiberg, who believes the local bomb shelter could become the impetus for creating even higher economic times for Albertan companies and residents alike. "We want to be the top marijuana grower for medicinal purposes in the world." He'll meet with County of Red Deer officials next week to try to halt the federal government's plan to destroy the shelter. "The Public Works Department of Canada still has to apply to the County for demolition approval," he said. "I'll start there, but if that doesn't work I'll still need a plan B if Ottawa awards me the contract." Penhold is 170 km south of Edmonton. Note: Day says don't dismiss plan to grow medicinal marijuana in Diefenbunker.Source: Edmonton Sun (CN AB) Author: Ian McDougall & Scott PattisonPublished: Sunday, October 15, 2000Fax: (780) 468-0139 Copyright: 2000, Canoe Limited Partnership.
