The Western Australian Greens are confident a cannabis reform Bill will receive widespread support when it is introduced in Parliament on Wednesday.
Greens MLC for the South West Region Christine Sharp has released details of the proposal which will see cautions issued for possession of less than 50 grams of cannabis. The cautions will apply for the first two offences, with third time offenders having to face court.Dr Sharp will also introduce a Bill which would allow doctors to prescribe cannabis as a medication. She says the first Bill in particular is quite conservative and should even appeal to the Court Government."I think we're in a very strong position here to just give the Government a bit of a push to take the first step down a track which after all the majority of the community feel they need to take," she said. However, the Minister responsible for WA's Drug Abuse Strategy, Rhonda Parker says the Government has no intention of changing its approach to drug reform.Mrs Parker says a cannabis cautioning trial being conducted in two Perth police districts is not scheduled to end until October. She says there is a substantial body of research indicating cannabis causes cognitive, physical and social harms and insufficient medical evidence to justify it as a medical agent. http://www.abc.net.au/news/default.htm
