A campaign worker for Mayor William Macera was charged with driving under the influence of marijuana while the mayor was a passenger in the car. Macera was not charged and said there was no marijuana in the car. But Chief Richard Tamburini told The Providence Journal that officers had found what may be the remains of a marijuana cigarette in the car and tests were planned on a small amount of material found on the floor of the vehicle to determine if it is the drug.
The campaign worker, Alan Iemma, was pulled over Tuesday night, because his car matched the description of one thought to be involved in at least one of five house break-ins in Johnston on Tuesday. No one has been charged in connection with the break-ins. Police said there was a strong odor of marijuana coming from inside the car. Iemma had watery and bloodshot eyes and his speech was slow and confused, officers said. Iemma, 39, was charged with driving under the influence of alcohol or drugs and refusing to submit to a chemical test. He was also charged with driving with a suspended license and driving on a foreign registration, which is a traffic violation related to having Vermont license plates. Macera is seeking a second term as mayor. He said he and Iemma met at the high school for a special School Committee meeting then left to get coffee. But first, they drove around the Central Landfill, where many residents call Macera to complain of odors. Macera said Iemma was one of his strongest supporters in the primary. ''He worked very hard for me,'' the mayor said. Complete Title: Campaign Worker for Johnston Mayor Arrested on Marijuana Count Johnston, R.I.
