Campaign financial information posted on the Internet for a group opposed to legalizing medical marijuana was tampered with to show the money went for such things as "bribes and Nazi Party membership." Bill Hobbs, deputy secretary of state, said the office is investigating who in his office was responsible for listing expenditures by the Coloradans Against Legal Marijuana.
"What we know at this time is that it looks like it was an internal data entry from an operator within our office," Hobbs said Monday. For example, the entry for a $250 payment to the Colorado Republican Party was changed to read "bribe." It actually was a payment for a booth rental at the state party convention. The entries were corrected within minutes of being brought to the office's attention."It was definitely not hacked into over the Internet," Hobbs said. "We will probably be getting involved in some sort of legal proceeding over this."Colorado voters will decide on Nov. 7 whether seriously ill people should be allowed to use marijuana with a doctor's permission.Contact Kevin Flynn of the Denver Rocky Mountain News at: http://www.denver-rmn.comPublished: September 12, 2000 Source: Denver Rocky Mountain News (CO)Copyright: 2000 Denver Publishing Co.Contact: letters denver-rmn.com Address: 400 W. Denver To Probe Tampering With State Web Site
Published: September 13, 2000 Source: Denver Rocky Mountain News (CO)Copyright: 2000 Denver Publishing Co.Contact: letters denver-rmn.com Address: 400 W. Colfax, Denver, CO 80204Website: http://www.denver-rmn.com/By Kevin FlynnDenver Rocky Mountain News Staff WriterSecretary of State Donetta Davidson has asked the Denver district attorney to look into a former employee who may have tampered with campaign finance disclosures when posting them on the Internet. An investigator and attorney from District Attorney Bill Ritter's office met Tuesday with officials from Davidson's office to gather information. The secretary of state's Web site this week contained tampered information saying that opponents of the medical marijuana initiative have spent campaign funds on "bribes," "propaganda," "chains and shackles" and "Nazi Party membership."Bill Hobbs, deputy secretary of state, said a temporary employee who had entered about 30,000 records is suspected. The employee no longer works there, and there is no indication other records were compromised. The committee, Coloradans Against Legalizing Marijuana, spent the money on lawful campaign activities. The "purpose" field in four expenditures was altered to reflect the bogus reasons. The tampering was only on the Internet site, not on the documents filed with the office.
