Alaska's Medical Marijuana Law Goes into Effect
Posted by FoM on March 04, 1999 at 07:13:31 PT

Juneau, Alaska The medical use of marijuana has arrived in Alaska. A new medical marijuana statute endorsed by voters last November takes effect in the state today.
It allows people to smoke pot to help cope with ailments including chronic pain, cancer and AIDS. The law also allows patients to grow limited amounts of marijuana, and protects doctors who recommend its use. For now, that puts Alaska at odds with federal law. But a bill introduced in Congress yesterday would set aside a federal ban in the states that have O-K'd its use: Alaska, Washington, Oregon, California, Arizona and Nevada.
