Law enforcement officials have seized marijuana plants, processed pot and cigarettes from a man who contends he was using the drug to ease symptoms associated with muscular dystrophy. Leonard Ellis, 62, said he had a prescription for marijuana, and that officers seized it along with his marijuana. He was released from the Franklin County Jail the same day he was arrested Wednesday.
Ellis said he was told by his doctor that marijuana could ease his suffering. The seized marijuana included seedlings and 6-foot-tall plants, along with several pounds in coffee cans, and 43 cigarettes. Maine's medical marijuana law approved by referendum last November allows people to have up to six plants with a doctor's prescription. Patients need a doctor's recommendation to use the drug. Ellis had 83 plants, which is well over the limit, according to the Franklin County Sheriff's Department. He said he was told that he can no longer use marijuana pending a court appearance next month.
