Manitoba's Marijuana Man is relaxed and happy again now that cops have returned two big bags of pot and growing equipment they seized from his Winnipeg home. Tim Patterson is HIV-positive and must take a variety of prescription pills every day. The medication makes him nauseous and weak, but smoking pot daily alleviates flu-like symptoms and kick-starts his appetite, he says.
"I'm heavier than I've ever been and I feel awesome," he said yesterday as he took a toke and held the smoke. Granted an exemption by Health Canada to possess, smoke and grow weed in his home, Patterson says it's a big relief to have his equipment and whacky-tabaccy back. Now he can legally start growing a new crop of the pain-killing plants again, Patterson said. "I even bought a firecracker to celebrate the big event," said Patterson, grinning broadly as he showed off two large bags of grass taken by cops before the exemption was granted. The Marijuana Man, as he likes to be called, wants to encourage exemptions for people if they need weed for medical reasons. "They should fight for their rights." Patterson said he wants the province to convert the courthouse built especially for the Manitoba Warriors trial into a grow house with different rooms for different strains of weed. Winnipeg police Insp. Gary Walker said cops support marijuana use when it's for medical purposes. "We're happy for him and if it helps him, it's a good thing. He seems like a nice fellow," said Walker. According to Health Canada, Patterson can carry up to 30 grams of pot. He can smoke it in public as long as he uses discretion and avoids smoking it near others. He can also have three mature plants and four immature ones in his home. Patterson obtained the exemption by filling out forms available on the Health Canada Web site and mailing them with an accompanying detailed letter from his doctor, he said. Canadian compassion, American viciousness, Part3
Is it something in the water, up there? What can possibly cause the police in Manitoba to be so sensible, while many of the police here are indistinguishable from rabid dogs wearing uniforms?More than a few times I've considered emigrating, but Uncle Sam's long reach extends all around the planet; no place is safe from his blind madness about illicit drugs; just ask Renee Boje. Unless the madness ends here - *stopped by Americans* - it will just get worse. And yes, we *can* stop it - just by enough of us getting active, registering and voting for third parties. Think of it: 70 million people registering as Green or Lib. It would send shockwaves throughout Washington DC and make even the idiot pols like Barr and Mica pull their heads out of their a***s. The antis could *fill* hearing chambers with intimidating, uniformed cops, but the pols would have to turn to them and say, just as they did with Big Tobacco, "Sorry, boys, the jig's up, and I can't be seen with you anymore." All it takes is a few minutes of your time. And sends a message of your own to fools who think they are the only ones saying anything worthwile. So how about it?
