TLC, along with several other organizations, will host shadow conventions to parallel the major party conventions to be held this summer in Philadelphia and Los Angeles. These shadow conventions will focus on three critical public-interest issues that the major political parties have failed to sufficiently address: campaign finance reform, poverty and the growing wealth gap, and the failed war on drugs. more...
This summer, while the Republicans and Democrats are holding their national conventions, a team of high-profile political leaders, concerned citizens, entertainers and activists will gather for our own "shadow conventions" to address key public interest issues overlooked by the two major political parties. These issues -- campaign finance reform, poverty and the growing income gap, and the failed war on drugs -- will be brought to the public's attention whether George Bush and Al Gore like it or not. Principal organizers of the shadow conventions are: Call to Renewal, Common Cause, The Lindesmith Center, Public Campaign, and author and syndicated columnist Arianna Huffington. The Lindesmith Center is coordinating with the drug policy movement on the proceedings on the failed drug war. These events on August 1 in Philadelphia and August 15 in Los Angeles will surely be among the most significant to date in the history of the emerging drug policy reform movement. We will work to get the message out loud and clear that our current drug policies are doing more harm than good. We, and our children, deserve better. Persisting in our current policies will only result in more drug abuse, more empowerment of drug markets and criminals, and more disease and suffering. Too often those who call for open debate, rigorous analysis of current policies, and serious consideration of alternatives are accused of being "soft on crime" or "surrendering." But the true surrender is when fear and inertia combine to shut off debate, suppress critical analysis, and dismiss all alternatives to current policies. If you also view the harsh and inhumane drug laws as unconscionable, please join us at one or both of the shadow conventions. Together we can build a strong and effective movement towards political and social justice in the United States.
