Policemen turned their hand to weeding yesterday when they dug up several cannabis plants sown in Parliament Square during the May Day protests. The 600 demonstrators who occupied the square are believed to be responsible for planting cannabis, gladioli, onions, carrots, barley, broad beans and potatoes, which were all beginning to sprout before yesterday's cull. A spokesman for the Royal Parks police said:
"They have been taken away and most likely incinerated. We're used to weeding, just not usually this kind of weed."He added that it appeared that the self-styled "Avant Gardeners" had "left behind a legacy of infant agriculture" although he admitted that the cannabis may not have been planted deliberately and could have germinated from bird seed. Paul Flynn, Labour MP for Newport West, said it showed the existing drug laws were futile. He said: "Cannabis is in the environment and grows so well here - like in many other countries around the world. It is an embarrassment for the Government, it's an illustration that this fairly harmless drug that has been used as a medicine and has never been used recreationally until it was banned is a part of nature." He called on Jack Straw, the Home Secretary, to "put away his prejudices" and abandon his tough policy on drugs.A spokesman for Reclaim the Streets, which was behind the May Day demonstrations said the discovery of marijuana plants on Parliament Square "showed we haven't gone away". He asked: "What can be more ridiculous and terrifying than the thought of the authorities arriving in bright vans to arrest some onions? There's no problem with cannabis being there at all. I'm more of an onion man myself."Following the peaceful protests in Parliament Square the May Day demonstrations descended into violence, resulting in more than a dozen arrests.Mentioned Web Sites:Guerrilla Gardening - Reclaim the Streets http://www.gn.apc.org/rts/mayday2k/index.htm Alliance for Cannabis Therapeutics http://www.marijuana-as-medicine.org/alliance.htm The Drugs Prevention Advisory Service - Home Office http://www.homeoffice.gov.uk/dpas/dpas.htm Medical Marijuana, Hemp & Cannabis Directory:The Hemperor: Roots to the Underground World http://www.geocities.com/CapitolHill/6443/hemp.html Issue 1869 Friday 7 July 2000© Copyright of Telegraph Group Limited 2000.
