My column on the medical use of marijuana triggered a flood of letters, almost all of them critical. Those published in Sunday's Commentary section summarized the tone of most of the e-mail I received. Some readers wanted to know my source of information on tumor growth, tar contained in marijuana cigarettes, immune suppressors and risk of heart attack.
The source is Steven Dubinett, head of the Jonsson Cancer Center at the University of California at Los Angeles. He was quoted on these issues by reporter Andre Picard in the Toronto Globe and Mail.My column about Highlands Ranch drew a hearty BRAVO from Gestey 2000: "A friend of mine and his wife went to see the home they were building in Highlands Ranch periodically. One day they decided that was not what they wanted and did some praying. When they went out that day, they found the house was placed on the lot backward. That is how they got 'out' of their contract."I received an invitation from Ron E. to attend a "Nude Recreation Weekend" July 15 and 16 at Mountain Air Ranch. He reminded me that when Ed Koepke and I owned KVOD, we conducted an annual fund-raiser for the Denver Symphony Orchestra. The nudists pledged $100 if our volleyball team would play theirs. They played in their uniforms (nothing) and we played in ours (jeans and T-shirts).Ron remembered that the nudists "beat the pants off" us, so to speak. Looking back on it all, I think our team had a problem focusing on the game. We were sort of like the old sailor who went to a nudist colony to watch the "navel maneuvers."Thanks for the invitation, Ron, but I'm barely able to look at myself in the mirror after my morning shower. I wouldn't want to impose that view on anyone else.My friend Bill Burleigh, chairman of the E.W. Scripps Co., wrote to compliment us on our coverage of the 50th anniversary of the beginning of the Korean conflict. "I ended up in college with guys who were coming home from Korean service," he writes. "Splendid fellows all. One of them was Ke Chang Oh, a South Korean officer who was spotted by a Jesuit, brought to the United States for schooling and ended up eventually as dean of the graduate school at Marquette, my alma mater."My old pal Jean Tool wrote to comment on my statement that George W. Bush will buy the presidency because of all the money he has. Money doesn't always win the election, Jean writes: "I give you President Nelson Rockefeller, two United States senators from Colorado, Bo Calloway and Terry Considine. Also Governors Phil Wynn and Bruce Benson. As your friend and mine Hal Shroyer often puts it, 'If money wins elections, we'd have elected Ross Perot.' God!"Former Rocky assistant city editor Judy Wiley writes from New Orleans that she spotted and spoke to Peta Wilson, aka La Femme Nikita, on Bourbon Street. She was with a guy who had a punk rock haircut, not Michael.Gene Amole's column appears Sunday, Tuesday and Thursday. E-mail: gamole aol.comLetters To The Editor:Medical Marijuana:I have MS and your article was pretty light or facts and long on opinion. You do not appear to have taken the time to research any facts. As for pot's toxicity, you should see the stuff that I am given by my doctor and what it can do to your body. I have to have a regular blood test to make sure that the medications have not damaged my liver. I guess I can't live without my liver. It is articles like yours that perpetuates the mis-information government campaign. I am sorry about your friend's cancer, but whether he used the pot or not, why do you attack a beneficial medicine for others? It works on MS spaticity very well. You should appreciate the fact that you don't have to endure spaticity daily, it is awful. Use facts, not government propaganda please. Thank You. - D. MaxwellMedical Marijuana:Dear sir, your anti-marijuana stand is so typical. I guess you believe everything our government says? Alcohol and tobacco do far more damage to people (of course these recreational drugs are"legal") than someone trying to help themselves by smoking a joint! Medical marijuana, helps my arthritis pain, helps me sleep, and is a great stress reliever! I am sorry it did not work for your friend, but there are thousands that it does help. I do have a question, why is alcohol and tobacco "legal" when they cause more death and destruction than almost anything else out there? The drug war czars and the alcohol, tobacco, and drug manufacturing companies are shaking in their shoes, a marijuana revolution is coming and they don't like it! - James KitagawaPublished: July 6, 2000© Copyright, Denver Publishing Co.Related Article:Just an Excuse for Peddling Pot http://cannabisnews.com/news/thread6172.shtmlCannabisNews Medical Marijuana Archives:http://cannabisnews.com/news/list/medical.shtml

Spaz
It's interesting he admits most of the letters he received were critical of his article. The spaz probably didn't give this little fact a second thought. He stands on the world's largest house of cards. The view must be nice...What is that about the harder they fall?arcturus

Oh.....
At first,I thought this guy didnt know what he was talking about, and that he had not thoroughly researched his story before printing it....Looks like I was wrong...Mr Amole got his facts from a Canadian reporter, who had gotten the inside scoop from some expert guy in California. I'm glad to see Gene explain himself,or I might of thought he didnt know what he was talking about.....dddd

UCLA STUDY
What was not brought out about the UCLA study was that more than 2/3 of people studied, were also cigarette smokers. The results of the study should be viewed with due skeptism.

Notice.....
how this S.O.B. sites these lame sources (most likely subsidized by Uncle Sam) and then switches the topic at lightning speed? Typical of someone who is on the short end of the stick!! Disgusting....
