But He Says It's Prescribed

Police arrested a 30-year-old quadriplegic in connection with cultivating marijuana, but Wayne Hobbs says he has a prescription that allows him to smoke the drug.San Bernardino County sheriff's deputies arrested Hobbs early Saturday for cultivation of marijuana and possession of methamphetamine. Deputies, who were responding to a burglar alarm at Hobbs' home, discovered 162 plants ranging from 5-inches-high to 6-feet-tall.
About 10 pounds of marijuana and one gram of methamphetamine were seized, officials said.Hobbs said the arrest cost him the more than $4,000 he has put into growing the garden. Going without the drug, he said, has left him in constant pain.According to a statement written by his physician, Dr. William Eidelman, if Hobbs did not smoke the drug, his health would suffer "imminent harm."In February 1998, Hobbs fractured his spine during a snowboarding accident at Snow Summit.Although in sheriff's custody, Hobbs remained at home due to his medical condition.Hobbs said sheriff's officials knew about his pot garden before the Saturday morning arrest. "They had been here before and seen everything," he said.Hobbs said he has tried for about a year to record his marijuana prescription with the San Bernardino County Sheriff's Department, but was turned away. It was just last week, he said, that officials finally accepted his documents.Regarding the methamphetamine, Hobbs denied that it was his. He said deputies found the drug in a small box where he keeps his cash and checkbook -- a place where friends and caretakers have access. In 1996, California voters approved medicinal use of marijuana. The law exempts patients and defined caregivers who possess or cultivate marijuana for medical treatment prescribed by a physician from criminal laws that prohibit possession or cultivation of marijuana. Meth
When I read Meth in the article it made me step back and shudder. Methamphetamine is a powerful drug. It is a drug that I would call "too good" The reality of constant use of Meth can make a person really unstable. Back in the 70s an expression was when someone was using Meth the person was a bust. I think that is very true. They don't know when to stop talking. I am very concerned as they tighten the Meth laws that a strung out person could challenge the police and people will start getting kill more then ever and that is really scary. Meth can make a person that is frightened very aggressive in my opinion.Peace, FoM!

These people have no shame
Shame on those jack-booted thugs, targeting a quadriplegic! He may not have been bright to install a burglar alarm connected to the police with all that pot around, but still, he should have been protected under Prop 215. (Yeah, and the Mojave Phone Booth should have been protected under the Historic Sites Act, too.) The sloth of the cops in granting him a Prop 215 license is a crime in itself. What they are now doing to him is a sin against God and humanity. It's really weird that the cops saw his plants before he had the license and did nothing, yet now that he has the license they go postal! They already knocked off a sick and suffering man by denying him his medicine. Wasn't that enough? Now they are going after quadriplegics! As a resident of this county I hear about stuff like this all the time. There is a lot of meth production going on in the county, so the cops are on hair-trigger for anything contraband, including that which people like Hobbs need to exist without continual misery.Makes me ashamed to be a Californian.
