Libertarians Convene

The Register's Opinion-page philosophy is sometimes described as 'small l' libertarian to put distance between us and the Libertarian Party, since we are not affiliated with the party in any way and neither endorse candidates nor put much faith in political solutions to human problems. Nonetheless, we welcome the party's national convention to Anaheim as a small but invigorating oasis in the vast wasteland of modern American politics.
At the Libertarian convention, which opened yesterday at the Anaheim Marriott and continues through Monday, you'll hear a fierce and consistent call for limited government and individual freedom, for low taxes and a non-interventionist foreign policy. At the conventions of the two major national parties later this summer, you'll hear variations on the theme of buying votes with promises of government action and endless reasons to flex U.S. military muscle the world over.At those conventions, you won't hear a survivor of the 1993 assault on the Branch Davidians in Waco. Survivor David Thibodeau will speak at 12:30 p.m. today at the Libertarian convention. In neither Philadelphia nor Los Angeles will you hear Michelle Kubby, who, with her husband, Steve, faces charges of marijuana possession for using medicinal marijuana. She'll speak at 2 p.m.By Sunday, the Libertarian Party will have picked its presidential nominee from among a half-dozen candidates. The nominee will deliver his acceptance speech around 5 p.m. Sunday. It will not be covered by the networks and won't even get much ink in these pages. But, no matter who the nominee is, it will sound like no acceptance speech you've heard. COVERAGE
Sunday, one of the CSPAN channels will be covering the convention. I urge you to watch, and hear another opinion besides those being put out by the Republicats or Demolicans, or whatever they our calling themselves these days.
