A man from B.C. wants his four children back. Brian Carlisle believes social workers took them away because he's an outspoken advocate for medical marijuana. Social workers removed Brian Carlisle's six-year-old daughter, as well as his common-law wife Rochele Lofton's three young children, April 9. There'd been allegations the kids were fed marijuana cookies, and that the drug was used to treat their asthma.
Carlisle is one of 37 people Health Canada has allowed to use marijuana for medical reasons. He uses the drug to treat glaucoma and chronic pain. He says B.C. authorities have ignored his special status and claims other exempt marijuana users have also had problems with social workers. Carlisle, 30, and his partner say the workers took their children based on lies and misconceptions about marijuana. They say a social worker accused Carlisle of exposing the children to marijuana — and said it's a drug that can cause comas. Carlisle says when he tried to get the worker to talk to an expert about the misconception, "she said I'm not talking to anybody you guys are bad people and that's it." The Ministry of Children and Families says social workers can remove children from their parents if they're suspected of giving, exposing, or involving them in drugs. The ministry can also seize children if drugs render their parents incapable of responsible parenting. Ross Dawson, director of child protection for B.C., says there's a court hearing on the case next week. "We would need to show that we had some evidence that a parent was involving their child in illegal drug activity or drug use." But Carlisle says his children's urine was tested a few days later and there was no trace of drugs. Carlisle's adoptive father said Tuesday his son is not a good parent and that's part of the reason his granddaughter has lived with him on and off for the past three years. Carlisle dismissed the claim that he's a bad parent. He said he and Lofton would gladly submit the children to daily drug tests if it would mean the children could be returned. Carlisle is an ordained minister in the Universal Life Church of Modesta, Calif. He lives in Hope, about 130 kilometres east of Vancouver. He made headlines in February when he drove to Ontario to attend a Health Canada conference of medical marijuana, and asked the department to set up a ministry of marijuana. Very Orwellian
It's a bit like losing your kids because you have asprin in the medicine cabinet. He should get a good lawyer. His cannabis is legal (for him) and authorised at government level. The Social Workers involved (and their bosses) should be fired.
