Two members of a ring suspected of mailing at least 240 pounds of marijuana to central Ohio from California over a six-month period pleaded guilty yesterday in U.S. District Court.
Nechelle Bowen, 25, of Zanesville, Ohio, faces up to 20 years in prison and Everton Jones, 35, of Los Angeles, faces up to 40 years when sentenced later this year by Judge Edmund A. Sargus Jr.Nine others accused of being in the ring have pleaded not guilty. In pleading guilty to one count of money laundering, Bowen also agreed to testify against other suspects. Jones, who pleaded guilty to one count each of drug-trafficking conspiracy and money-laundering conspiracy, refused to sign a similar plea agreement.During yesterday's hearing, Sargus warned Jones that he probably will be sentenced to far more time in prison because he refused to inform on his co- defendants. Despite Sargus' warning, Jones told the judge he stood by his refusal. The ring shipped marijuana through air-freight companies between October 1997 and April 1998, according to testimony at yesterday's hearing. Central Ohio ring members sold the contraband and then wired up to $120,000 to their suppliers in California, according to other testimony.Jones admitted mailing eight packages from California containing a total of 52 pounds of marijuana. Bowen admitted she wired $27,500 in drug profits back to California.
