Wardens were checking licenses at Whiskeytown.Welcome to the party, officers. Two people fishing on the shore of Whiskeytown Lake were cited after one reportedly offered Fish and Game wardens a drag off his marijuana pipe, officials said Thursday.
The two uniformed wardens were patrolling the area Sunday afternoon when they noticed about a dozen people fishing near the Oak Bottom area. When they stopped to check for fishing licenses, one of the wardens spotted a fisherman removing a plastic baggie containing a green, leafy substance from his pants pocket, according to a California Department of Fish and Game report. The man started puffing on a pipe and then passed it on to a fellow fisherman, Raymond Lee Byrd, 24, of Cottonwood, officials said.''As he (officer Dave Szody) approaches from behind, apparently they didn't hear him coming and the guy's puffing away on his pipe,'' said Fish and Game spokesman Paul Wertz. ''So the warden says, 'Hey, man, give me a hit.'''The guy reached back with the pipe without even looking and hands it to him.''Byrd was cited on suspicion of possessing marijuana. He was arrested and booked into the Shasta County Jail on an outstanding arrest warrant charging him with possession of an opium pipe, contempt of court and failure to appear in court. Also cited on suspicion of possessing marijuana was Christopher Joseph Perry, 20, of Anderson. The wardens confiscated 16.5 grams of marijuana along with the metal pipe. It's not unusual for wardens to walk in on illegal activity, Wertz said. ''Especially given that game wardens tend to be off the beaten path a lot,'' he said. ''They often stumble on strange things.''Except for the drugs, everything about the men's fishing excursion was legal, Wertz said. Everyone had valid fishing licenses, and one of the men had caught three ''beautiful rainbow trout,'' Wertz said.''They're good sportsmen,'' he said.Reporter Alex Breitler can be reached at 225-8344 or at: abreitler redding.comPublished: April 7, 2000© 2000 Record Searchlight - The E.W. what i want to know is ...
did he take that hit? "Everyone had valid fishing licenses, and one of the men had caught three ''beautiful rainbow trout,'' Wertz said." -- yes & so what exactly is the **problem** here? How were these people harming our society, or corrupting our children, or even hurting the people involved? Did we arrest them because marijuana is a "gateway" drug, & on their next fishing trip they would doubtlessly have been injecting heroin & eating babies?

This is as bad as it gets...
A person can't even enjoy a natural substance in nature!! The cops sure know how to ruin people's lives. And I wouldn't be surprised if the contempt of court stuff was related to smoking pot, too. And who cares if it's an opium pipe if he had no opium?Of course, if they had been smoking deadly tobacco, no problem! What's next, drug sniffing dogs patrolling your favorite hiking trail?
